There were all kinds of items being thrown on the display. MRE contents, blanks, live ammo, practice grenade fuzes, peanut butter packets, unauthorized undergarments, the works. Then I happened to notice one of the privates at the end of the bay making his way up to the bunk with an 8.5″x11″ page of Arby's coupons.This particular private was the one we liked to secretly call “Pvt. Staypuft”. He was a foodie, and an odd one at that. I visited Bangkok last year and some of my local friends took me to one famous joint for dessert called Mont. They made an order and when it arrived it looked like the picture above.You have got to be kidding me!It was a toasted bread with condensed milk and sugar. To add insult to injury it came with ice cold, sweet milk. Now let me explain why I had this reaction.I grew up in the 80–90s. Eating bread was something that I did everyday. Usually it was bread, butter and jam. By the 90s the jam, unless you made it, disappeared from the stores. So if you were lucky, you got big piece of bread with butter and sugar sprinkled on it. This was also very common when you went to children's summer camp as well.So for me bread with butter/condensed milk and sprinkled with sugar is equal to an institutional food. It signified time when there was nothing in the stores and schools, parents tried to make something tasty out of limited number of ingredients.Because of the above I still don’t like to eat bread with sugar. It is not something that I would eat voluntarily let alone wait in line for half an hour!
