Partly yes, the university holds better laboratory facilities than most of the colleges in the state. Plus the amount of research work it incubates is also amazing. All faculties in the university will either be a doctorate or pursuing PhD. So on papers, yeah SASTRA deserves 25th rank.But practically does it deserves..??It's a question mark.. Though it houses best of its class laboratory, the utility rate of them can be questioned. Personally I faced a lot of moments where I hav to write numerous letters addressing every possible person in the hierarchy and beg in front the lab assistants to just get a piece of metal cut,that too using a century old bandsaw. Mostly the lab in charge people are hesitant in taking up in-house projects. Being a “B. Tech” engineering aspirant , the syllabus itself should push the students towards application oriented projects rather than research and analysis projects. But the ground reality is so different that most people take up the later. A little more moral support from management by wide opening the doors of workshop can really bring lot of innovative products. (Innovation is different from Invention) . Being in sastra for 6yrs I have never seen most machines in the machine shop running..Above stated is just am example. So the point is, SASTRA University has a visionary management but a contradicting ground staffs. Wherever the management has a direct hand, those departments will be best in class, for ex: Chemical engineering, bio tech, research dept.So my verdict is that sastra deserves it but with a star mark(*) stating to eradicate its conservative mind set.Edit 1: In reference with the anonymous answer to the same question, I would like to add something more, the parameters considered for the ranking are not fool proof. For example, there is a greater weightage given to “total no. Of faculties who completed PhD”. Sastra simply gained a advantage by changing their recruiting policy as minimum qualification for a faculty is PhD. Even staff appraisal is based on their PhD status and number of papers published. Sastra being one of the higher paying university, faculties accept the terms of university. This may not be the case with remaining 543 colleges in TN.
