First, you have to ask why a standard is necessary, and what and when it is applicable. Two of the more common standards referenced are ISO (The United Nations - Government Organization) and ECMA (the vendors of the language technology). The process of standardization is a bureaucratic process. The standards tend to occur after a product has matured, and there is some market pressure to add features or reform a language and that language is not in the domain of one organization. Basically, standardization is necessary after a language has peaked and is in decline. I have been on standards committees before (not language, financial interchange — i.e. less complex) and it is a political mess where you have multiple vendors with different aims and goals trying to compete in what features get added. It either ends up with language by committee (everyone and every way possible gets absorbed) or takes a very long time to come up with the standard. Even then there are holes that you can drive a truck through and need to have regular updates when incompatibilities are found to continue and try and fill in the gaps.Rust is a single vendor (not-for-profit; open-source foundation), and will have it’s own test suite to ensure functionality and compatibility over a given release. The language has an RFC proposal for adding or changing features and is still in it’s infancy. As such the ECMA standards process would only have one vendor - so it would be silly. The other government organization would be trying to standardize a moving target at this point — and not only that it would only add a governmental bureaucratic layer on top that is not going to be responsive to users either. The fact that Rust is not ‘standardized’ is a red herring, and an attempt to distinguish an older legacy language that is well past it’s prime on something that is completely irrelevant to the issue at hand with Rust.
