PDF Editor FAQ

When has somebody shared with you a "secret family recipe" that turned out to be taken from the back of a package?

HA! My mom made some amazing homemade bread, ever since I was a kid. I never wondered about the origin of the recipe, but then, when she made some copies of some of her recipes for myself and my wife to use, I found out where the bread recipe came from.Remember those Scholastic Book Fairs in grade school, and the monthly list and order form you got in class? I was a big fan of the Peanuts comic strip, so when I saw a Peanuts book, I ordered it. One in particular was a cookbook with the recipes named after various characters in the strip and in particular, one named ‘Charlie Brown’s All Star Homemade Bread’ – yep, Mom even had that written on the now-faded recipe card so there was no mystery as to where she got it.

How would you explain the concept of data structures and algorithms to a beginner?

A data structure is a composite of multiple pieces of information, organized in a useful way, often in a hierarchy with larger structures composed of smaller ones.Common small standardized structures are called primitive data types. These include Little Endian binary integers, Unicode characters, null terminated strings, and IEEE 754 floating point numbers.Larger data structures are built up from smaller data structures and primitives. For example, the information on a purchase order form can be represented as a data structure containing two data structures within it. One data structure represents the order as a whole, with Account number, name, billing address, shipping address, items ordered, and totals value. The second is for line items (stockkeepingunitid, quantity, item price, extended price). It appears many times, once per different item ordered.An algorithm is a sequence of steps to accomplish a task, such as how to bake a cake, or finding out whether a number is prime.In a cookbook, each recipe has an algorithm and a data structure or two. The algorithm is the sequence of steps. The first data structure lists the ingredients, with its name, quantity, and unit of measure. {(Bleached flour, 3, cups), (water, 1, cup), (butter, 100 grams)} The second data structure is the list of equipment required, {measuring cup, 1 quart bowl, spatula, cookie sheet, baking paper, spoon}

When can teenagers be expected to start cooking for themselves?

Depends on when you start teaching them.My mom always had us girls cooking with her from a young age.( She tried to get my brother to do it but he would grumble it was girl’s stuff and stomp off angrily - to this day, I believe this was to his detriment.) I recall making dumplings from age of nine onwards. Chopping didn’t start until 10 or 11. I helped in a lot of prep for years. By age 13 or thereabouts, I could make gimbap on my own, some simple soups and broil fish in the oven. By age 18, my sister and I could cook all the American dishes for Thanksgiving- should I add better than my mother? There were some more complex Korean dishes that we always ate for Thanksgiving that my mother continued to commandeer.When I was younger- 7 or so, I recall that my sister bought a kid’s cookbook from one of those Scholastic book order forms. We learned things like making pizza from white bread, ketchup and ham. We kids all loved that and made that frequently. Our ketchup consumption must have been insane, but we could make our own snacks and not bug our mom to feed us.I also remember the microwave coming with a cookbook and I was really determined to make a couple of dishes in it - I was about 13. It involved things like cheesecake which none of us knew how to make. When I was 14, one of my school friends amazed me by making an omelette- I immediately had her teach me.I say teach them the skills, encourage them to explore within your financial means, and see if they like it. At the very least, teach them simple dishes so they can cook if necessary when they are out on their own. Cooking is a great money saver and a skill that I think everyone should have.
