They weren’t even a proper naval design, the Casablancas were based on a Liberty ship used to ferry goods across the Atlantic.SS John W. Brown, a Liberty shipLiberty ships were merchant ships designed to be built in three months and last five years. Improvements in effeciency brought this down to the construction time of 42 days and they lasted over fifty years. Over 2,700 Liberty ships were built, about 50 of whom were modified into small aircraft carriers. These Escort carriers were not fast enough to participate in fleet operations, they were not sturdy enough to survive pounding of enemy aircraft and live to fight another day, but they could accomodate 20–30 aircraft to support amphibious operations and, crucially, fight against the submarines, especially in the Atlantic.USA constructed “just” 17 fleet carriers (plus 9 light carriers) during the war. That’s still plenty, seeing as it’s still three times what the British built and about six times what the Japanese built - and Japanese built no Liberty ships or Escort carriers.

There are 3 Liberty Ships that still survive to this day; 2 are still operational, the third is a static museum ship in Greece.The 2 operational ships are the SS John W. Brown, which was towed here to Baltimore for a 3yr restoration, and the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, which is in San Francisco. The third ship, SS Arthur M. Huddel, is in Greece, with the name SS Hellas Liberty.As far as the Escort Carriers (CVE’s) / Jeep Carriers, that did a helluva job in WWII in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres, unfortunately none no longer exist.Liberty Ship SS John W.
