What is it like to live in Concord, CA?

In my adult life, I have lived in SF (8.5 years, right by Golden Gate park, including through the first dot-com boom and bust), in Oakland (5.5 years, in the Temescal area) and now in Concord (5.5 years, both on the West and East sides). You could not pay me enough to move back to SF, even without the absolutely ridiculous rents people are paying there now. What it was like living in SF, compared to Oakland and Concord has had something to do with where I am in my life, something to do with what the economy is doing, and something to do with the personalities (and changes, both recent and not) in those areas. I have a 7-year old now that I did not have in SF, for example.Right now, living in Concord is good!I love it for:* The quiet (I work in technology but from home, so the extreme volume of both SF and Oakland were stressful)* The access to places beyond SF (without waiting in 2 hours of traffic on a weekend). You are already halfway there if you are heading to Napa, Sacramento, anywhere in the area of Reno or Tahoe and on the way back, guess what? You are already halfway back!* Commutability - I still can get into SF downtown in 40 minutes on the BART, and also in the very different communities of Walnut Creek, Orinda, Lafayette, Oakland, and others easily.* Social activities - There are so many cultural festivals, community activities, kids sports teams, and other things to do out here. I am always amazed! Almost any weekend there is something to do nearby, without the accompanying throngs of people that accompany almost ANYTHING one chooses to do, especially out of doors, in San Francisco.* Cost of living is reasonable. Rent is going up, which is why we decided to buy here, but the cost of living is more reasonable than elsewhere I have lived in the bay area.* Proximity of Mount Diablo - real honest-to-goodness-hike-for-an-hour-and-not-see-anyone-outdoor space! In pretty much 10 minutes or less!* Cultural mix - I hate to say it, but SF is getting more and more the same, and the benefit is to the other local communities that our cultural creatives are moving to!* Farmer's Market on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings (in Summer) rocks!* Bike Concord is getting more active, and improving the lives of cyclists around town.* Friendly people! I have met lots of nice folks here in Concord.* Small-town feel not only of Concord, but also other nearby towns. You can stroll along a "main street" and eat at locally owned restaurants and such. Not all big box retail.Where is needs some work:* Schools are still not great. The City needs to recognize that this is one of the biggest issues affecting where local residents end up living and to address school improvement immediately and comprehensively. Some are looking up, largely due to local parent activism.* Traffic getting out here on a weekday is pretty bad, though improved with the second bore of the Westbound Caldecott tunnel. More people carpooling and using Bart is really the only solution to that. BART is THE way to go if you need to commute locally from Concord.* There are some poorly-maintained areas of town, and some parks which could use attention. Having said that, the area is still, like many, in recovery mode from the recession, so those may look up too.* Walkability in some areas could be improved, but is already better than most other towns I have lived in. Some plans are underway for a green streets initiative and some downtown redevelopment, so we will see what happens in the near future.

Why has Theresa May shifted towards a hard Brexit?

Theresa May is going for a hard Brexit, turning immigration policy into a UKIP wet dream, and shifting economic policy leftwards because that is where she thinks the votes are.I wanted to write a really erudite answer, referencing Disraeli’s One Nation Conservatism[1] , but where’s the need for that much complexity? The Tory Party exists to win elections. Their credo is ‘Stable Government [of us]’.One of the reasons everyone hates politicians is that we expect them to do what we want, or failing that, to do the right thing. That is most definitely not what they do. Politicians make decisions when interests conflict. Jeremy Corbyn ‘Monoxide’ has decided that when interests conflict, they will join the protest and make a lot of noise. The Tories under May have simply asked the question where are the votes and gone for it aggressively. In 2015, David Cameron’s Conservative Party won half the seats in Parliament with 37% of actual votes.[2] Here are all the parties with over a million votes at the last election:Conservatives 11.3mLabour 9.3mUKIP 3.9mLib Dem 2.4mScottish National 1.4mGreens 1.1mAs Labour has tacked towards the Socialist Workers Party (where Corbyn recently gave a speech), the Conservatives have felt much safer in the middle. Centrist voters have no where to go. Forget all the people trying to manipulate and project desires on to the EU referendum. Theresa May doesn’t have to project anything to know that there are 4m previous UKIP voters that are going to applaud a tougher line on immigration. The boss bashing Industrial policy is more interesting and I am going to tie it in with Theresa May’s policy on grammar [selection by ability state] schools. They are both attempts at imperfect solutions in an imperfect world. The worse off do significantly worse under a grammar school system. Poorer students in Kent (as measured by means tested free school meals) do half as well at the exams they take at 16, than those in London which operates a comprehensive school system. However, without grammar schools all that happens is that private school pupils absolutely kill it. This was evidenced by the return of public school boys David Cameron and Boris “I’m a celebrity get me out of here” Johnson to the apogee of British politics. I wrote here[3] how dominant the privately educated are. I’m talking 70% of senior judges, 55% of top civil servants, 43% of newspaper journalists, 33% of the England cricket team, and 22% of pop music stars. That’s 7% of the total population taking all the best jobs and punching above their weight at writing music.Grammar schools are a solution where you sacrifice the slowest buffalo on the plains in order to improve the diversity of your breeding stock of leaders. The plans to support industry and bash bad bosses is an attempt to steal the working classes from the Labour Party. I’m not sure why but the English have got rather contemptuous of those in poverty and unable to help themselves. We saw this in the former chancellor George Osborne’s belief that Welfare spending was a source of endless of cuts.[4] As a rule of thumb, 3 out of 4 times hurting people won the Conservative party votes, so why would you stop?Add this all together and Theresa May is probably going to win big at the next election. What are the risks to all this? Firstly there is the risk to the economy of a hard Brexit. Although I am the first to point out things are fine now because we haven’t had Brexit yet, the big picture risks are still probably limited. If the UK inflicts something horrible on itself but the rest of the world is fine, then any near term recession is going to be small. The currency’s decline continues to be an exporter’s dream. Both a hard brexit and lower immigration are long term negative supply side shocks. When you see billion dollar estimates of the costs of these policies, these are tiny shortfalls in GDP compounded over decades. These sort of numbers just do not cut it because (1) the link between GDP and people’s quality of life has been breaking down and (2) people can barely save for next year let alone worry about ten years away.In contrast to this they see the decline in their communities everyday - on TV![5]The big risk is that Brexit plus Trump plus Retaliation equals Protectionism and that leads to a spiral into a global depression. But then we’re all screwed. And there is a side benefit to this - the weaker the economy, the less attractive it is to immigrants!Lower immigration will cause wages in select industries to jump.[6] Again I have to be sanguine about this because (1) we want wages to rise and (2) its easy to issue work permits at a later date if things really start to get too harsh.Industrial policy can work. France, with a long history of such interventions, has more heavy industry relative to the UK despite similarly expensive workers. Industrial policy just happens to be prone to being very expensive and even after that you still end up second to the United States.[7]But, and it shocks me that more people aren’t harping on this, The World Has Changed. And I don’t mean how all of Donald Trump’s ties are being made in China. I mean negative interest rates. Governments in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany - they can all borrow money and be PAID to borrow.[8] Think about it. Every government should be borrowing and spending like crazy. It really is free freaking money.Imagine doing something useful with this money, like investing in infrastructure and boosting people’s skills. I’ve clearly ascended cloud cuckoo land now, the very idea of politicians making people’s lives better…Thanks Logan Webb for the A2A.Footnotes[1] Premierships of Benjamin Disraeli[2] United Kingdom general election, 2015[3] If we reduce every nation's political culture to a stereotype, what is Britain?[4] Nick Clegg: ‘I did not cater for the Tories' brazen ruthlessness’[5] What do people in Britain mean when they say, "I want my country back"? Nigel Farage and others have said this about Brexit. This sounds like coded racism, xenophobia, or bigotry, but some people insist it isn’t any of those things.[6] Who are the biggest winners and losers if Britain were to exit from the EU?[7] The new industrial policy in France[8] Germany becomes second G-7 nation to issue 10-year bond with negative yield

I had some problems with exporting in a GIF format, which a project im working on really needed. The picture would come out really glitchy. I contacted customer services and they responded to the problem and took me through various steps so they could look at the problem. They kept me updated throughout. It turned out to be quite a difficult problem, but one that eventually got fixed. So its given me a good experience into the quality and response of their customer service which was really good :) thank you :D
