In my adult life, I have lived in SF (8.5 years, right by Golden Gate park, including through the first dot-com boom and bust), in Oakland (5.5 years, in the Temescal area) and now in Concord (5.5 years, both on the West and East sides). You are already halfway there if you are heading to Napa, Sacramento, anywhere in the area of Reno or Tahoe and on the way back, guess what? You are already halfway back!* Commutability - I still can get into SF downtown in 40 minutes on the BART, and also in the very different communities of Walnut Creek, Orinda, Lafayette, Oakland, and others easily.* Social activities - There are so many cultural festivals, community activities, kids sports teams, and other things to do out here. I am always amazed! Almost any weekend there is something to do nearby, without the accompanying throngs of people that accompany almost ANYTHING one chooses to do, especially out of doors, in San Francisco.* Cost of living is reasonable. Rent is going up, which is why we decided to buy here, but the cost of living is more reasonable than elsewhere I have lived in the bay area.* Proximity of Mount Diablo - real honest-to-goodness-hike-for-an-hour-and-not-see-anyone-outdoor space! In pretty much 10 minutes or less!* Cultural mix - I hate to say it, but SF is getting more and more the same, and the benefit is to the other local communities that our cultural creatives are moving to!* Farmer's Market on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings (in Summer) rocks!* Bike Concord is getting more active, and improving the lives of cyclists around town.* Friendly people! I have met lots of nice folks here in Concord.* Small-town feel not only of Concord, but also other nearby towns. You can stroll along a "main street" and eat at locally owned restaurants and such. Not all big box retail.Where is needs some work:* Schools are still not great. The City needs to recognize that this is one of the biggest issues affecting where local residents end up living and to address school improvement immediately and comprehensively. Some are looking up, largely due to local parent activism.* Traffic getting out here on a weekday is pretty bad, though improved with the second bore of the Westbound Caldecott tunnel. More people carpooling and using Bart is really the only solution to that. BART is THE way to go if you need to commute locally from Concord.* There are some poorly-maintained areas of town, and some parks which could use attention. Having said that, the area is still, like many, in recovery mode from the recession, so those may look up too.* Walkability in some areas could be improved, but is already better than most other towns I have lived in. Some plans are underway for a green streets initiative and some downtown redevelopment, so we will see what happens in the near future.
