What are some unusual ways people make money?

1) Socks subscriptionAn entrepreneur from Switzerland named Samuel Liechti had a crazy idea to start a company that would distribute socks to subscribers several times throughout the year. For nine pairs, each “sockscriber” pays a minimum of $89 annually to keep the socks rolling in. Surprisingly enough, there is an immense amount of people who are too lazy to grab a pair of calf-high socks at the store and subscribe to this silly service. Each new "sockscriber" receives a calculation of how much time he will save by not making sock purchases: about 12 hours every year, or three weeks in the lifetime of an average Swiss male, which is estimated at 82 years. Liechti brought his "sock-scription" service to the U.S. in 2005. Two years later BlackSocks began selling subscriptions for underwear. Liechti now boasts 60,000 active customers in 74 countries. BlackSocks opened a New York office last year.2) Providing personal paparazziCelebrities aren't the only ones that can have paparazzi all around them. Now, you can hire your personal paparazzi for a day! This is how Celeb4aday.com makes bucks—by giving you the ultimate celebrity experience. It can be for birthdays, gag gifts, parties, bachelor & bachelorette parties, or ANY other event that requires The Star Treatment. Celeb4aday.com believes that the everyday person deserves the attention as much, if not more, than the real celebrities.3) Star registryyou can put stars under your name and get certification for it! This, of course, comes with a price. International Star Registry (ISR),the original star registry that has been naming stars for people since 1979, allows you to do just that. Celebrities, dignitaries, and individuals all over the world have used its services to buy a star for friends and family. The ISR offers a gift package wherein a special star is selected in the sky and you get your Star Name and Star Date recorded along with it. The gift package includes a beautiful parchment certificate, a sky chart with your name and the star's coordinates, and an informative booklet on astronomy. All names in the astronomical compendium will be published in Your Place in the Cosmos©, which is registered in the U.S. Copyright Office. However, this is not recognized by the scientific community. Stars' names are only reserved in the International Star Registry.4) Butterfly supplierSelling butterflies and making millions? It doesn't seem conceivable, but Jose Muniz has managed to pull it off. You can get your very own live butterfly from Jose, who started the business based on a bet.It all began when a friend bet him $100 that he could not sell butterflies for a living. Now, seven years later, the former business consultant and his wife, Karen, own Amazing Butterflies (amazingbutterflies.com), a live-butterfly distributor with offices in Tamarac, Fla. and San Jose, with a projected $1 million in revenue in 2006.5) Selling Irish dirtAlan Jenkins, a Belfast entrepreneur, and Pat Burke, an agricultural scientist from Tipperary, have already shifted around $1m (£512,000) of Irish muck to the United States.Their company, called Official Irish Dirt, has also received online contacts from Irish people all over the world who are keen to get their hands on dirt from back home.It was Jenkins who came up with the idea. During a visit to see friends in Florida he heard some Irish-Americans at a meeting of the Sons of Erin, a community organization for people with Irish ancestry, saying they would like to have some Irish sod placed on their funeral caskets. Soon afterward he met Burke, who worked at the Irish Department of Agriculture, at a dinner party and the business grew from there.Since Auld Sod's Web site, officialirishdirt.com, went online, Burke says he has shipped roughly $2 million worth to the United States, where about 40 million people claim Irish ancestry, and Enterprise Ireland estimates annual sales of Irish gifts at more than $200 million.6) Friend rental serviceWe all grew up being someone's friend, but we never got paid for it. Well, today is an entirely different era. You can now get paid for being a friend. All you have to do is create your profile in RentAFriend.com, set your hourly rate, and wait for somebody who is interested in hanging out with you. It's a win-win situation right there.Rent A Friend allows you to create a free friendship profile, where you can charge up to $50 an hour to be rented for social events and activities such as weddings, sporting events, concerts, movies, operas, hiking, biking and dining.Site owner Scott Rosenbaum got the idea from dating sites. He noticed that nobody was offering mere friendship and he wanted to "go a step back" from dating sites. Therefore, this is a strictly platonic website.

Have you ever given up in your life? What motivated you to rise again?

Despite being a bright student in college, I had made some bad career choices in my life. As a result, after 2 years of working in IT, my salary was barely 25,000/- month ($350/-).I was somehow managing my finances, where I used to pay my loan and save money for my sister’s wedding. This is what happened 5 years back, when my mother was diagnosed with hernia for the second time. One day my dad called and he said that his school has penalized him with 2,00,000/- rupees, as he was an exam coordinator too, and one of his juniors made a mistake while filling form.Being a private school teacher, his salary was barely 11,000/-, and when he learned that the school will compensate that loss from his salary, he literally cried.Expenses were reaching their height, and I was still getting nuts. I remember those times when I couldn’t sleep for days. Those were the times when I wanted to give up.Office pressure, family problem, and my personal life was terrible too.I always knew if I give up then,My family will be scattered.I can’t provide better future to my sister. As I had a loan, my family will become bankrupt. And who will take care of my mom? When there is a tough situation in your life, people become selfish. They look for an escape. But history doesn’t remember cowards.Remember, for every problem in your life, there is a solution. All you need to do is think about it peacefully. And this is what I did back then. When my mom was diagnosed, we had 6–8 months for her operation. The main problem was to avoid penalty at my father’s office and rectify the mistake. My father used to travel 3–4 times in a week to the nearest head office, which was 350 km away. After 2 weeks, he finally rectified it, and they waived off that penalty.I was preparing for GATE back then; 9 hours in the office, 6–7 hours of study and 3–4 hours of sleep. It was my daily routine. If someone would have asked me to sweep the floor, I would have done it for money.Though I got a good rank in GATE, I had to leave my dream of higher studies, as I got a job in one of the best software companies in the world. Because my whole priority was money back then.My mom’s operation was successful and my sister got married in a good family. And in these 5 years, I got rid of every loan from my life. When you choose to fight back, you need to remember that battle is gonna be tough. If it were easy, then everyone would have done it.Keep your calm and think. If you rise, only then can you write your story like I am writing mine. Hope my story will motivate some.“As long as there is life, there is potential; And as long as there is a potential, there will be success!”

How has been your experience with ONGC?

JUNE 29 2018Friend :- Hey !!!! check the results . Its official now .Me: Heart beat stops . My father was sitting beside me . Silently , I opened the recruitment site . Downloaded the PDF . My name , without much trouble, just flashes at 6th position.POST RESULT :-Hearing the news , my father’s eyes turned moist and wet . Seeing the face of the most happiest person at the moment I felt contented , last time I could remember the same happened on GATE result . I was preparing for NPCIL interview and without any second thought I left everything . Booked the tickets to attend my cousin wedding. Hurray !!!!!Now , after attending marriage , ONGC really tested my patience . After 2 months period of anxiety and boredom , offer letter were mailed . Huhhhhh … Finally , something to talk about . I was posted in Kakinada , Eastern Offshore Asset (EOA) , Andhra Pradesh . I was disappointed with the location . But after taking reviews from few people , I got to know that it is 14 days on off duty and work pressure is less with good learning opportunities for Electrical Engineers . Some sigh of relief . :) . I started filling the joining documents and subsequently booked the train tickets .First Time in South India and Joining formalities :-I travelled 40 hours by train and finally reached the destination on 3rd September . Really it was whole new world out there . Weather was hot and humid . People cannot understand Hindi . It was like circling in a maze with sun dancing over your head . I called the coordinator and he instructed me to report to the hotel . I found South Indian people very decent and polite . Hotel staffs behaved very nicely .People were not afraid to wear gold while roaming under dark night . I started mingling with other trainees . It was fun going to office for few hours , submitting documents and then engaging in chit chat with fellows in hotel .Only 7–8 trainees got 14 days on off duty out of 15 Electrical Engineers reported . Rest were assigned normal 5 days working schedule or 6 days ON 2 days off duty pattern .After tedious process of medical tests and joining formalities . I was sent to plant on 25th of September with all the accessories like helmet , safety shoes and dangri suit . I was very happy . I just have to spend 14 days and then I will be singing Home Sweet Home .Plant Visit on 25th September 2018 :-Plant location was very remote . I had to take the auto from Amalapuram (3 hours drive from Kakinada ) which itself is a small town . It was 45 minutes journey in auto . I reported to plant Installation Manager . He instructed me to come to duty next day at 8 am . I was given double occupancy room in hostel equipped with cenralised AC system , Almirah , landline and two table-chair set . One common room , Table Tennis and badminton court was also provided in healthy condition . You are working 12 hours in 7–7 days shift so it becomes difficult to avail these facilities . I used to play table tennis only that too for half an hour only . Hostel was setup at 5 minute walking distance from Plant . Mess was inside the hostel building . Food quality was good and you cannot find better chappatis , not in any South Indian restaurant in Kakinada which are mostly flooded with non - veg stuff and tandoori roti only .Work Begins :-Alarm rang sharp at 6 am . I bathed and wore the dangri with heavy shoes and helmet on my head . Milk , fruits , eggs and aloo parantha was served in breakfast . I was excited and nervous both on the first day of job . I met every field personnel including Technicians , Executives , JEs and Chief Engineers .To my surprise , I found most of the people were very caring and charming unlike rude HR professionals (at Kakinada ) . There may be some kind of internal politics running in parallel which I was not aware of . But still mostly I noticed all of them were living as a family . There were few people who advised me to consider other offers like IOCL , NTPC or leave as soon as possible for higher studies . But I knew even in other PSU also , life may not drastically change. Somewhere I was biased only for Powergrid and Posoco .I was not given any task initially . I just observed the running plant for few days . And then started learning Single Line Diagram of substation , functioning of Gas Turbine Generator which was good to learn for any Engineer . But what I observed is that Executives there are not only involved in few critical tasks like parallel operation of GTGs and Synchroscope operation but also in meaningless work too , which you may not have dreamt of . Luckily , there were plenty of Technicians and JEs so the tasks were equally distributed to JE and Executives . I was taking daily readings of UPS , GTG and transformers . I was giving clearances for daily maintenance work including measurement of Insulation Resistance , cleaning of motors and condensers .14 days over . Now time to fly back . I was reimbursed every single penny spent on to and fro journey. But my journey was really tiring . Flight was just a part of long break up journey . It took me 20–24 hours to reach home . Even longer when I came back to plant . This cycle was repeated one more time before I left .Mental Analysis and Escape Route :-Powergrid result and Posoco interview date were declared and I took the extension from Powergrid. I was confused between Powergrid and ONGC . Because it may sound foolish to leave ONGC for Powergrid . On top of that high perks and benefits adhere you to the organisation strongly . But ultimately only you know your situation and priorities.I anticipated that after learning every technical aspects in plant within a year . I will be doing same work throughout my life besides doing irrelevant work too . Geographically also , it was getting difficult to travel to and fro in every 14 days . Travel becomes easy when your work place and home is near airport .After lot of enquiry , I left ONGC for Powergrid . Which I will not recommend to everyone . I have written detailed answer on POWERGRID and reasons to leave ONGC. You can follow the link :-Gaurav Agrawal's answer to Would it be wise to leave an M.Tech at the IISc for Powergrid?Gaurav Agrawal's answer to Why did you leave ONGC?Final Takeaway :-ONGC is a fortune 500 company for some reason . They really take care of employees need and their families . Although job profile you may not like . But do study both side of the coin before leaving ONGC . Generally job profile in PSUs are not defined . Most of the PSUs give very mediocre job to candidates . Engineering jobs in Central Government and in MNCs like General Electric and ABB can be disappointing too in India .
