PDF Editor FAQ
Why is that most Latinos and African American celebrities do not promote academic achievement within their communities, but seem to adore entertainers and athletes?
Harsh question but it goes to the heart of inequality reasons. Here's a shocker about the majority of celebrities: They aren’t that smart. Now everything with consciousness from roach to Rhodes Scholar is intelligent; smart is the application of intelligence. The majority of Black and Latino entertainers and sports celebrities come from the majority educational level of Latinos and African Americans—-which is about high school level. Only 25–30% of the entire American population is post high school/college level educated. Within Blacks and Latinos that equals to about 25%-35% respectively. So 2 out of 3 celebrities comes from high school educated parents. Then they became celebrities.Celebrities also have a shelf life. Most struggle for several years to a decade, achieve some sort of regular success/fame and then even out to the B & C list. A List stars are rare comparatively speaking to the number of actors that are registered with SAG. One also has to consider that they have to look at 40+ years of survival, their own families, illness, etc. when they accept a job. It might seem like $50,000 an episode is a lot but after taxes, staff, agents, travel, etc. then divide those episodes against the 40+ years and it’s why you see more and more actors and actresses doing schlockier projects. They need to up that yearly average income to maintain being “rich”. And here we are asking for some of their cash for charity when they might not even be sure that it will last their lifetime. For sports stars, they have a narrower intellectual bandwidth familially and therefore financial opportunity window, less than 20 years, sometimes even less than 10 years to go professional, accumulate money, avoid injury and get out with some sort of nest egg. Most don’t because it’s a dual reality pressure—-be excellent to stay in the game and learn all the financial ins and outs to insure wealth at the end of a career that one might not be able to calculate the end time of. While they are technically in college there is no guarantee that they are getting an advanced education pointedly in urban development, social development and psychology and business development.Entertainers (singers, actors, models, rappers) fall into an even more competitive category. There is no “natural talent”—-there’s concerted practice, improvement, mentorship and networking. Having to do all of that from scratch is difficult. The most successful people started out very early and went to school—-Yale Drama, School of the Performing Arts, college, etc. (Jodie Foster, Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Meryl Streep) which gave them a boost to becoming a working, paid entertainer. The rest, not college educated, aspire to, like mice, chew their way into the business, which is highly difficult to impossible. Both sets require concerted practice, improvement, mentorship and networking which drains from the time and attention one can pay to one’s community. And 60%- 70% of Latinos and Blacks are living at a median Middle Class level or lower so there is no incentive to stay. The irony of poverty and attaining one’s goals is that it gives you the resources to leave. Once out, why return? There is rarely resources, support or sanity for the level that one might obtain outside of one’s community of origin. You don’t need to go back, you need to get out and stay away to maintain a foothold in the new world of entertainment/sports——success.All of the resources and profit for one’s attaining entrance to those worlds is not in poverty based neighborhoods.Juanita SuperstarJuanita Superstar leaves Spanish Harlem to become a great dancer, actress, singer. In order to attain these things she needs dance training—-those schools/teachers aren’t in her neighborhood; nor are acting coaches and singing coaches. Once she’s somewhere else—-Hollywood, Broadway, even a college setting, she likes that world better, even if it’s slightly foreign because it’s less dysfunctional, it’s more enhancing, it’s more encouraging of her talents developing and her interests. Now she’s in a world which begins to reward her for her work of multiple years and she returns to Spanish Harlem because she wants to give back but she runs into multiple problems based upon her education.Contributing Cash, up to $50, 000Let’s say she shows up at the local WalMart knock off store and buys $50,000 worth of food and toys for everyone in the store on Christmas Eve. The effort is useless. It’s like if I put a quarter in a parking meter for you when you park and ask how that’s changed your life? For a micro-instant it’s alleviated a cost but in the long run it’s done nothing. Now if I bought a plot of land and made it your personal parking space in the city and donated it to you and paid all the property taxes on it—-that might change an aspect of your life.Juanita’s contribution is insignificant to the real community issues. The food, the toys, the coats, have a shelf life of maybe a year but have no resale value and sure as heck can’t be used to progressively move someone forward. Take your XBox to a job interview and tell them the XBox is the reason they should hire you. Then tell them Juanita also bought you a jacket. And she bought you a weeks worth of groceries. The groceries should entitle you to a college degree too, right? You see how short term doing Xmas store buyouts are, right? It’s the qualitative difference between a handjob and marriage.Contributing $1 Million x 20 YearsOk, let’s say Juanita really makes it big so when she returns she’s got some real bank to do something and she invests in opening a charter school. She guarantees $1 million dollars for 20 years for the school. She’s guarantees $20 million in an escrow account. But wait. What does a school cost?$1 million on staff, rent and insurance for the building, a year. Now each child needs about $7000 on top of the monies from the city/state/federal government—-generally about $7000. $14,000 per year, per student. And we have 1000 applicants to the school. Let’s say we accept 500.That’s $7 million a year. The school budget is $140 million for 20 years.Let’s call it a total of $10 million a year to run the school.Juanita’s monies are a huge assistance but not the full answer because let’s say we pull all the monies together with hers, we still have to contend with the children and their education levels that have been inculcated by the public school system and their parent’s lack of awareness about their responsibility to enhance and supplement their children’s education. Most parents, particularly Blacks and Latinos, think their job is to drop their children off and get perfectly baked (smart) cookies-children at the end of the day. It doesn’t work that way. After $10 million dollars and substandard test scores and low graduation rates, Juanita learns that the children, due to systemic issues of poverty, low expectations, bad school districts, low parental education and lack of interest, health, curiosity and resilience issues (trademarks of the psychology within poverty), the shiny charter school is prettier than the old public school but not testing qualitatively higher than the school it replaced.Contributing $100 million+Juanita busts the bank in her work away from the neighborhood. She returns worth hundreds of millions of dollars. She starts buying up land, tracts of houses to renovate, opening or rehabbing stores; several charter schools, parks and even a college scholarship program. She has a huge inbred problem. The residents.People helicopter view communities as something you could sweep in and change if you threw in some money, X, Y, Z and some love. But one of the things that you’d have to do is talk to someone like me who has worked with poverty populations on a educational, social, political level for years about is whether the poor people you’re offering all this stuff want change. People in poverty are there for also personal reasons, not just systemic/financial/opportunity based ones, not everyone wants to study in college, work 40–80 hours a week at a career, be away from their children, family, entertainment.Unfortunately the respite from poverty is sex, entertainment and some form of drug, whether legal or illegal. If you can lower your standards, you can enjoy poverty because it demands less of you. Poor people often lack the trained skills of resilience and grit to move out of poverty (including discipline, learning new rules and modalities, budgeting, having less children); those of us not in poverty don’t often see how we are different than people in poverty psychologically to be able to advance. This is why only 18% of people from generational poverty move to middle class or higher, it’s a huge mental shift that can’t be achieved alone. To move from poverty is a form of mental, psychic, and social suicide to the old way of life—-again illustrated by Lottery winners, 70% losing it all in 5 years.Watch the show My Dream Lottery House and listen carefully to how much people have won and the kind of house they’re looking for. Most win $1 million (now minus taxes) which is $530k+—-they’re often looking for homes in the range of $400k to $500k—-the show itself gassing them up. In all honesty the best ones are the ones who want houses under $250k but that’s not really exciting fantasy TV is it?These psychological issues of the poor, Juanita's community is why her giving is so problematic to achieve teh results she’s seen, Middle Class and higher, outside of her community. Those communities have differently trained and thinking people who have had time, corporate and governmental support to be qualitatively and quantitatively different than the poor neighboring communities.Juanita pissed and frustrated puts the brakes on leaving $100 million to her neighborhood because there aren’t enough educated, honest, long term thinkers in the neighborhood to steward the money. So she gives $230 million to the University of Southern California….and they name a building after her and give her a lifetime supply of Beats headphones.People want change when they don’t have to do much for it and it benefits them. But there’s a deep psychological correlation to why only 18% of poor Americans move from Poverty to Middle Class or higher in their lifetimes. You have to want out and be willing to change your entire perspective (and cut off relationships) to change. That’s not only hard but impossible to do for some people.Juanita’s mass community change infusion breeds resentment because who is she to come in and tell people the way they’re living their lives is wrong? Who asked her to do all of this? They want her money but not what her program/development demands of them. They want food and XBoxes which is why she goes to Spanish Harlem and drops $50k at the department store for everyone there and gives hundreds of millions to USC.The two communities, want different things—-give me an XBox in Spanish Harlem VS give me a scholarship worth $50k so I can complete my degree and start earning at least $40k a year—I can help myself, my family and maybe even give back again. One is a better investment than the other. The Conundrum of Latino and Black WealthSo you have Black and Latinos who achieve wealth but don’t know how to do anything with it but spend and pray they keep making more money because they have no generational lessons in money, ownership, legacy building, capitalism. They are the first, the Alpha, person to begin the generational legacy that will potentially garner multi-generational outcomes. The vast majority, 75% or more, of Black and Latino entertainers and athletes, can at best move some of their closest relatives out of poverty stricken communities and try to learn how to integrate socially and financially into higher class communities where problems have been solved.Community and Civic minded celebrities have the challenge of they know what to do, how to do it and may even have the resources and network to get it done, but the resistance they will meet at not just the legal-political and financial level, which is natural, but the recipient level, which is unnatural, isn’t worth the effort.Try feeding someone who keeps spitting the food back at you. Or improving a neighborhood that a percentage of the people keep vandalizing. Or changing decades, centuries, worth of behavioral programming. That’s the complex challenge.Addendum:I got DMed the question what might be a resource to understand what to do, give and develop if one were in a celebrities position or just generally interested and fortunate enough to have minor to major resources. I use this book in my classes a lot to point out Black and Latino social/urban and future development ideas and practices. The National Plan to Empower Black America: Dr. Claud Anderson: 9780966170221: Amazon.com: Books#KylePhoenix
What was the cause of the rift between Hindus and Sikhs?
The Britishers!Yes, just like everything we can blame it on the Britisher ( and ISI)… but actually, we are to blame. Both Hindus and Sikhs have forgotten their history and teachings of their Guru. We are brothers, few fringe elements on both side won't change this fact. Before going any further, let me pay my homage to the Sikhs and all the Gurus, what they did for us cannot be repaid with anything other than absolute reverence. And they still continue to do so.Guru Gobind Singh and Maharaja Ranjit Singh are my sources of inspiration. Reading about their lives and works brings me sheer joy and at the same time a stream of tears. Both Hinduism and Sikhism are like children of Sanatan Dharma, which has given rise to many great offsprings over millenniums and will continue to do so (hopefully).1. Most Punjabi Hindus have Guru’s pics on their walls. Because after all, they are their Gurus too.2. Guru Teg Bahadur died for Hindus. Who in return use to send their sons to become Sikhs and fight in Khalsa, raised by Guru Govind Singh.3. Many Hindus died for Sikh Gurus. Remember who carried away Guru Teg Bahadur’s head so that it couldn’t be captured by Mughals? A Hindu.4. Do you know how many times Guru Granth Sahib talks about Ram and Krishna?Hear Bhajans of Madhusudan, Baal Gopal, Man Mohan from Gurudwaras?5. Hear Benti Choupai of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj? What does he say in that? Shiv, Brahma, Vishnu. Sikhs visit Vaishno Devi and Salasar. Hindus visit Gurudwaras.6. Holiest Sikh Shrine is called Hari/Har Mandir.7. Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj proudly claims ancestry of all Sikh Gurus from Bhagwan Ram in his masterpiece – Bichitar Natak8. Maharaja Ranjit Singh conquered today’s Pakistan, Kashmir and land of Pathans. And he declared the first day- “No cow will be slaughtered from today. It's not permitted in Dharma.”9. Guru Gobind Singh Ji proudly remembers how his father Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji died for Dharma‘s sacred Tilak and Janeu.10. Veer Banda Bahadur was Hindu Rajput who fought under the inspiration of Guru Govind Singh and retaliated for the killings of Guru Govind Singh’s sons.11. Sikh Gurus raised an army of warriors and protected India.Hindus worship Sikh Gurus. Sikh Gurus sang Bhajans of Nirguna Brahm taking the form of Govind/Gopala.12. According to the report dated 28th November, 1858, an FIR has been filed by the Thanedaar (Policeman) of Awadh, which states that, 25 Nihang Sikhs have entered the Babri Masjid and are performing Hawan and other religious rituals there. Ayodhya Revisited.13. Dasam Granth cover page from Gurudwara Patna Sahib which depicts Guru Gobind Ji right venerating Durga on Baisakhi day of 1699.14. Iconography of both panths are closely related:15. Copper plate inscription from Kapal Mochan Shiva temple(1679).Records visit of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh and donation to the Brahman priests:16. An copper plate in Anandpur lipi(earliest form of Gurmukhi script) found at Naina Devi temple records the Sikh Guru's visit to the Shrine17. Why is the city population of Pittsburgh, PA so small?
Mark Rauterkus is indeed correct when he notes that Pittsburgh comprises a fraction (about one-fifth, actually) of the area of Allegheny County, home to more than 130 municipalities, the largest number being boroughs under one-square mile and four-digit (and smaller) population numbers. The “why” is largely forgotten. Pgh was a sleepy frontier town at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries. The city around Fort Pitt comprised only a few districts. Various settlements and farms were established outside the city limits. As industrialization hit the area in the early 20th century (the first major industry was — any guesses? — glass!) other settlements established themselves, usually upon one of the rivers. But it was the steel/coke/coal industries, and their robber barons, who really carved up the landscape.Industrialists did not like the idea of Pittsburgh politicians (and regulators) messing in their businesses. Toward the end of the 19th century, dozens of small boroughs were incorporated in the shadow of specific mills and other installations. US Steel ran several boroughs and small cities, even supplying what would normally be government service (e.g. trimming problem trees, fixing roads. Even George Westinghouse, far less venal than his steel contemporaries, managed several small boroughs east of Pittsburgh in the Turtle Creek basin. These little fiefdoms were just fine until the aged infrastructure of post-WWII America fell solidly behind the European and Asian industrialists (crippled since the war) surging with the latest technology. In the 1970s and 80s, the Steel Valley crumbled. Towns that had been “taken care of” by the Lord Business, now had to fend for themselves. The City of Pittsburgh did not suffer the same fate, because its economy was more diversified. We had PPG Industries, the H.J. Heinz Co., Alcoa, Westinghouse and a growing medical-research community that would expand into other technical fields. (Please remember that Dr. Jonas Salk developed and tested his polio vaccine here.)But why is Pittsburgh still so small? Yes, there were laws in the late 19th century that allowed cities to acquire other municipalities, which is why Brooklyn is part of New York City. And why Allegheny City, Pittsburgh’s “twin” across the Allegheny, was similarly annexed. But well into the 20th century the big corporations retained their clout to resist annexation. When they abandoned regular governance, the locals continued to carry on. They liked their little independent municipalities, and depended upon partnerships with their fellow tiny towns for basic services like road repair and police protection. In one of my earlier lives, I covered a lot of these small towns for a local daily. The low level of services was scary. In more than one place, the chief of police was the only full-time cop; and he made minimum wage. Part-time cops worked for a half-dozen or more departments. Of course, they did not meet the same standards as Pittsburgh police. In spite of the problems, most people I encountered in these towns did not want to affiliate with Pittsburgh. Why? OK, it’s anecdotal, and completely unscientific, but I was told over and over by folks that they wanted to keep “those people” (i.e. blacks, sometime described in more colorful language) out of their neighborhoods.Addendum: Anyone who has visited Pittsburgh knows that many of the steep shale hills are totally unsuited for development. Walmart found out the hard way. Kilbuck landslide site still not stabilized 7 years later
