Navy Enterprise Team Racing Challenge Cup 2016 was held from 02-07 Mar 16 at INWTC (Mumbai). A total of 90 yachtsmen from all over India participated in the event in 16 teams. A total 56 races were conducted in a quelling schedule over three days.40th Inter-Service Best Physique Championship. The 40th Inter-Services Best Physique Championship was held from 07 – 10 Feb 16 at 3 BRD Chandigarh. Navy Team has won the championship trophy. Naval sportsmen have done the Navy proud by winning 06 Gold, 05 Silver and 01 Bronze medal during above Championship.Cadet and Junior Asian Fencing Championship. The Cadet and Junior Asian Fencing Championship was held from 20 – 29 Feb 16 at Saudi Arabia and India won Bronze medal.63rd Inter-Services Hockey Championship. The 63rd Inter-Services Hockey Championship was held from 18 - 21 Feb 16 at 3 BRD, Chandigarh. Navy Hockey team has finished ‘Runners up’ during the Championship.59th Senior National Shooting Championship. 23 Naval Shooters have participated during the above Shooting Championship held from 01 – 15 Dec 15 at New Delhi. Navy Team won Silver Medals in all the events at the Championship.Inter-Services Tennis Championship. The 69th Inter-Services Lawn Tennis Championship was held from 07 – 10 Nov 15 at Ludhiana. I’m going to shy away from trying to talk about form. Proper form is a function of the weapon you’re using and the marital art style you’re practicing. Certainly there are proper and improper ways to wield weapons, but given that we’re talking about swordsmanship as a whole I think that’s too specific of a focus.Instead, I want to focus on something in kendo and other Japanese sword martial arts we call seme (攻め). Seme literally translates to “offense” in English, but it refers to a sense of psychological pressure that skilled swordsmen/women wield when they enter into a fight and “push” onto their opponent with severity and aggression.A collection of successful strikes in kendo from the 59th All Japan Kendo Championships. Note the moments before each strike, and the palpable sense of tension between each opponentWhen two experienced kenshi (swordsmen/women) are fighting, there is a palpable sense of tension between the two. This is because both are expressing seme and taking the exchange deadly seriously.They rely on the training and experience they’ve accumulated over years of fighting, and go off of pure muscle memory. They stop being cerebral and switch over to a hard-wired set of action/response techniques, so as to move as fast and as purposefully as possible. Every breath is important. Every movement of their sword is important. Both people are like cocked springs waiting for the right moment to strike, and when they get that moment they fire like a rifle into their opponent to kill.You don’t gain seme without lots of experience. Regardless of how much armor you’re wearing, having someone point a sword at you (wooden or steel) and try to kill you is pretty scary. It ignites your fight or flight reflex, and forces a strong set of biological responses in the form of fear.Seme is the practice of converting that fear into aggression, and using that aggression to power your attack and overpower your opponent. It’s critical to winning a fight, because real fights don’t go according to plan. They’re dirty. They’re fast. And if you screw up, you’re dead.The reason why I think it’s important to bring up seme is that seme isn’t just specific to Japanese swordsmanship. You see it all the time in other martial arts where skilled practitioners take the fight very seriously and switch over into this “kill or be killed” style of combat.Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, is a brutal form of unarmed combat popular in modern MMA. Note the seme in how the experienced fighters regard each other during each exchange and the sense of tension they have before each blowFor example, I have a lot of friends who I know practice some kind of MMA. None of them are swordsmen, but all of them who have been in a lot of fights understand and appreciate seme. It goes under different names depending on whether we’re talking about Kendo, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, etc. But the fact remains: if you’re a trained and real fighter, there exists some kind of condition where you take things deadly seriously and focus a hundred percent on a purposeful expression of violence.A novice kendoka (right) with no seme versus a more experienced kendoka (left) with seme.When you fight another kendoka (kendo practitioner) who doesn’t have seme, you usually overpower them. This isn’t necessarily because your form is particularly better than theirs - it’s because you’re taking the fight much more seriously and moving with greater aggression.Note in the above video how quickly the kendoka with seme overpowers his opponent and continues to dominate him throughout their fight. The novice is aware of all of the potential strikes his sempai can throw, but because he doesn’t have experience with seme and aggression he is quickly, and repeatedly, struck. He even gets disarmed at one point, as he gives up in the face of his opponent’s overwhelming aggression.One should definitely be focusing on how effectively they’re using their weapon - whether they’re consistently striking effectively, whether they’re using optimal distance and timing, whether the blows they connect with were on purpose or just “lucky” hits, etc. But even here seme is important, because being able to keep a clear head and fight effectively with all of the above criteria requires strong seme given the chaotic nature of a melee.Regardless of what style of marital art or weapon you’re using, seme is a clear indicator of experience and skill in fighting. After all, sword fighting is fighting. You can study all the kata/forms in the world, but if you don’t have seme it won’t help you when you’re forced to fight a real person.
