Can you describe yourself in one picture?

She is Anjali. She is daughter of a labourer, who works near to my place on a construction site. She was crying, she was hungry. I was going to the college and saw her. I gave her a packet of biscuits. She started smiling. Her smile is worth million dollars. From that day, I started saving money from my pocket money.I am a member of an NGO. We help homeless people, orphans and special children.I am blessed to be a part of their lives.I was in severe depression before I joined the NGO but now these kids are a part of my life and they’re the reason of my smile.I can do anything to make people smile. I can’t let anyone cry. One day I’ll leave the planet blue but before leaving, I want to make a special place in people’s heart for me.Thanks :)

Are your parents proud of you? Why?

I am 18 years old guy with dead wishes. My dad works in a private factory and melts iron and rubber. He earns just INR 12000 including overtime. My mother is a housewife and we have two cows so we sell milk to to earn some more money. So back then, in 2014, my family’s monthly income was just INR 16000. So to help my family in such financial situations, when I was 14, I worked as a newspaper boy earning just INR 1500. I worked because of my family's condition. I always wanted not to ask my parents for money because I knew their condition. So, All I wanted to do is help my parents in every situation so they don't face any trouble. After working as a newspaper boy for 5–6 months, someone told me that a new pizza restaurant is opening in our town and they are hiring for the position of a delivery boy. So I went there and spoke with the owner about the opening.Me- Sir, I can work here as a delivery boy, I know all the areas in city.Owner- It's ok, what is your age? Do you have driving license?Me- No sir, I am 15 years old ,but I need urgent job sir , I will do anything u want.Owner- We need a part-time kitchen worker. Can you chop vegetables?Me- Yes sir, sure.Owner- Ok, come tomorrow at 6 pm and your shift is from 6 pm to 11 pm.Me- Yes sir, sure. What is the salary sir?Owner- We give 6500 INR for full time and u will get 3250 Rs for half time.Me- Thank you sir ( I was so happy then).(I am standing in top right corner on this last photo)After that, My schedule was like :-3 AM - Wake up. Get on the bicycle and go for newspaper vending.6 AM - Visits home, take a bath, get dressed for school.7.30 AM - 2 PM - School. The get some sleep and study.6 PM - 11 PM - Pizzabite ( Restaurant Name )I was a bright student in school from beginning but the job and everything made me a dull student. I was expelled from my school because sometimes I slept in the middle of class and all teachers were frustrated of me. So I had to change my school in 11th class and the new school was like a government school. School timings were 7 AM to 12 PM, so I got more time to relax and study. As time went on, my Board exams came and I secured the 1st rank in humanities in my school scoring 402 out of 500 in 12th standard. So, I left my newspaper vending job and started going to Delhi by train to study in the library there because I am a UPSC aspirant and Civil services is my primary goal.My schedule changed to -6 AM to 5 PM - Library6 PM to 11 PM - Pizzabite job, by then my salary was also increased to Rs 4200.Then my cousin suggested me to do a digital marketing course and become a freelancer. He allured me because freelancers earn much money. So I spent all of my savings in a digital marketing course and began my journey to became a freelancer. I left the library and started studying at home.Family expenses increased because we registered my sister in the best school of our city and all our family accounting cost wambled. I could see my parents calculating everything and planning to start saving money from everywhere so they could to bear the expenses of my sister’s schooling. I was also affected thinking about my parents because I knew the value of money earned by hard work. So, I started giving tuition to students from class 5 to 11 at my home, all afternoon and evening.(This is the pictures when I started giving tuitions at home)My family also helped me to get students from their known ones or from the neighborhood. As the student kept increasing and the space became less, I started searching for a shop or some space on rent to open a tuition centre. I got one on the 1st floor in my own street for Rs 2500. The Condition of that place was so bad that I had to renovate and paint it.Imagine, a boy who is just in his teenage was on his way to become a freelancer, a teacher, a tuition centre owner, an accountant (Customer service representative ) and a UPSC aspirant. My family was proud of me. Then students kept increasing and I had to hire a teacher for maths and science. This was my Tuition Centre ( Destination Tuition Centre )Everything was going perfectly as I was saving around 12000 in a month after giving rent and salary to the teacher. End of 2017, came the exams of all the students conducted by their schools or boards and all of them secured a good rank. Even the students who were not passing in school tests cleared exams with good marks. The Families of all the students thanked me. Some of the students were from lower castes or from financially weak families so I gave them free tuitions. At this point, even I felt good for the life I had carved out for myself.Worst moment of my life :One day, My father came home drunk and disputed with my mom. This thing kept happening everyday for about 2 weeks. Then comes a day, my father and my mother got in a fight and my father hit my mother. My mother left home and I was finding her on the streets when I spotted her heading towards the station. I stopped her, she was crying badly. This was the worst moment of my life. I told her to come with me to home. She said - Its your fault, you don’t say anything to your father when he does these things. I told her to come and see today. We went back home and saw my father drinking wine again. I picked the bottle and threw it out on the street. My father became angry and hit me. I stood there and told him “hit me, kill me, do anything with me but don’t you dare hit my mother again.” He remained silent and my mother start crying and said “Anku, tu yha se chala ja, yha yahi sab hoga” (Anku, go from here, It will keep happening here).I packed my bag , touched the feet of my mother, hugged my sister and left home.I Went straight to bus stand, threw my old SIM card, took a new one and headed towards Chandigarh on 14th April, 2018. I went to Chandigarh because I had been given an offer by a lady to work in her company as a digital marketing expert. I spoke to her, she helped me find a room in Chandigarh. At start, she was giving Rs 8000 only. She said I can also work from home if I want. I accepted the choice and then I want to do a full time job. I went for an interview in a international BPO. I was among the 400 people for interview when I realised the unemployement situation of our country then. That was my first interview, and looking at the long line outside the office, I thought that I won’t clear the interview, then I thought about my situation, how will I live in a big city with just Rs 8000. If I won’t clear, I will have to go back home and face those things again. I believed in myself and became self-confident. As a result, I was handed a joining letter in evening of that day and my net salary was Rs.24700. I was earning 32700 in a month, which was pleasant for me. I spoke to my mother after 10 days and informed her about my salary, I cried feeling the joy in my mother’s voice. I went home after 2 months and everything is like new for me. Everyone was speaking to me more respectfully than before, even my father was very happy and told his friends that his son is saving double his salary and lives in Chandigarh. Then me and my parents planned for the construction of a new house and we together built a new house. This is our new houseEveryone is happy in my family now, I am planning to leave my job in June and start preparing for UPSC in my own room which I created with my own money. This is my new RoomToday my family is proud of me. How should my financial planning be at age 35 for a better future?

Quick Disclaimer : I am 23 and will be replying to this as I have turned 35 in 2032 which is 12 years from now.I could have made two kinds of cases for myself :Where I have not started saving anything (Spender Abhishek).Where I have started investing from the first paycheck itself (Investor Abhishek). We will look into both the situations one by one and try to understand what went wrong while planning for financial goals in life.~ Where I have not started saving anythingI graduated at the age of 21 and started working with an IT company in a distant city with a salary of Rs 30,000. I started getting indulged in all the luxuries like getting a furnished condo, costly dining along with shopping spree on weekends. As I was not aware of the whole financial literacy movement, I wanted to live my life king size for which I need to pay a big fat cut from my salary. My expenses would go on like this :Luxury Shared Apartment ( Rs 10,000)Dining (Rs 8,000)Shopping (Rs 8,000)Bills (Rs 4,000)The only savings which was happening for me was the PF Contribution which was as low as 1250 per month and 750 from the employer i.e. Rs 2000 per month.Fast forward 4 years, I am 25 years and still working with the same company where I have been given nominal hikes which made my salary to Rs 50,000. Again as the income increased I indulged in new luxuries like getting a costly bike on EMI and my expenses are like this now :Luxury Shared Apartment (Rs 12,000)Dining (Rs 12,000)Shopping (Rs 12,000)Bills (Rs 4,000)EMI (Gadgets + Bike) (Rs 10,000)The only saving which happened from my side was PF contribution which increased with rise in my base salary and now I am contributing Rs 2250 per month and employer is adding Rs 1000 i.e Rs 3250 per month. My net-worth will be close to 1.5 Lakh.Fast forward 5 years, I am 30 years old now and made a switch to another company which is paying me Rs 1,10,000 per month after taxes. I am married now and my wife is a house-wife. My expenses happen to increase as there are two people now to rely on the same in come :2BHK on rent (Rs 20,000) in a gated society.Dining (Rs 20,000) for two people.Shopping (Rs 20,000) for two people.Bills (Rs 10,000).EMI (Car+Home) (Rs 40,000)You even took loan from your family members to put the down payment from your newly booked 2bhk flat in a gated community which will give possession in 2034 exactly 5 years from now.Fast forward 5 years, I am 35 years old and working with the same company at an average salary of Rs 1,30,000 per month after taxes. I was just informed that the Developer just ghosted the whole project and ran-away with my money. I lost overall Rs 38 lakhs which is a big shock ! My expenses have come down as the EMI has stopped for the house which gives me an extra Rs 30,000 in hand to invest. I took another risk and invested in equity directly with no prior experience :2BHK on rent (Rs 25,000) in a gated society.Dining (Rs 20,000) for two people.Shopping (Rs 20,000) for two people.Bills (Rs 10,000).EMI (Car) (Rs 10,000)Equity Investment (Rs 30,000)Being 35 year old with a family and a networth of close to Rs 10,00,000 in PF isn’t a very good stage right? Let’s see what all we could have done correctly.~ Where I have started investing from the first paycheck itself.I am 21 year old male in a new city, I have started earning Rs 30,000 which is a very big amount considering my middle class background. I have applied the envelope technique which allows me to make multiple packets of mandatory expenses like :Rent + Food + Bill ( Rs 7500 )Travelling ( Rs 2500)Two equity funds (Rs 5,000*2)Emergency Fund (Rs 5,000)Leisure (Rs 5,000)I am 25 years old now and my salary has increase to Rs 50,000. I have rented a good semi-furnished apartment in a gated society with friends. My expenses are :Rent + Food + Bill ( Rs 12500 )Travelling ( Rs 2500)Two equity funds (Rs 5,000*2)VPF Contribution (Rs 5000)Equity investment (Rs 10,000)Emergency Fund (Rs 5,000)Leisure (Rs 5,000)Apart from this the PF contribution are Rs 3250 per month. I have invested most of my increment into saving or investing for a future need like Home , Retirement and Car. My net-worth will be 5 lakhs at-least !I am 30 years old now and about to get married to the love of my life who is also working for the same company, our combined income becomes double and makes it to Rs 2,00,000. We both are in line to achieve financial independence retire early and trying to keep our expenses bare minimum :Rent a 2bhk + Food + Bill ( Rs 35000 )Travelling ( Rs 5000)Two equity funds (Rs 5,000*2)Two mid cap funds (Rs 5,000*2)Two index funds (Rs 10,000*2)VPF Contribution (Rs 10000)Equity investment (Rs 30,000)Emergency Fund (Rs 10,000)Leisure (Rs 20,000)Home Kitty (Rs 50,000) in a good index fund.We both believe in shifting back to a Tier-3 state where we will make a house on one of our ancestral lands & live. Our combined net-worth is 20 lakhs in liquid funds and Rs 20 lakhs in PF account.I am 35 year old now with a baby and my wife has taken a break from her career which leaves the household income to Rs 1,30,000 per month. We made a few fund cuts in our leisure and home kitty. The remaining expenses remain same where everything is invested into 80–20 equity:debt ratio.Once I turn 40 years old , I don’t have to worry much as I have already laid the foundation stones which will reap me funds whenever needed for any life goal. What was the point behind this story?“You have to understand that the best time to start is from the first paycheck you receive which will instill a habit of saving in you and later compound at enormous rate.”This post took me an hour to write and your one up-vote will definitely make it count.Drop a comment as it will keep me motivated to write further .
