Our 10-year-old only child says he's very lonely. We try to keep him engaged, but what else can be done to keep him preoccupied?

I have no idea if you are interested in Church for your family which refers to your child too, of course.I am not referring to a hateful and hating Church. I am referring to a mainstream Church filled with love, and wonderful activities for your whole family, of course this 10 year old in particular. Of course I refer to spiritual growth and spiritual growth/knowledge. Sunday School as the Junior Highs.Jr. High Youth Group on Sunday evening with a prior Snack Supper! There are so many opportunities for making friends, learning, being with others his age. They bond as a group. They grow in every way. Not only do they have tons of fun, but they grow in concern and love for others! Along with spiritual growth comes the fun of service projects, working together on a project to give to others in need. Many start what is called the Jr. Highs at age 11 or 6th.grade! Now that's one delightful group! Lots of learning with the distinction of being the Junior Highs! A Wednesday night meal, and Bible Study! They will maybe assist groups in Vacation Bible School, activities, plenty of eating, supervision of course, a few supervised trips, some for pure fun, some maybe taking clothing to be donated to the local Mission, maybe a collection of donated good winter coats, hats, gloves. It is service that warms the heart, and brings satisfaction that they have done what they can! There are trips, maybe the Game Truck, maybe a strictly supervised Lock In, with getting to stay up all night, have breakfast, and be picked up by parents! Then there are the Senior Highs, and they might well be actually serving lunch or dinner at the Mission. They grow not only spiritually, but grow even more in social consciousness, love, and understanding, Supervised Retreats!Sunday night Senior High Youth Group!Wed. night Bible Study, and so much more! Sunday Night Senior Highs!(Oh, there will be permission slips to be signed by a parent!)

How can I convince my mom to let me go to the gym as a skinny 13 yo boy?

Your parent probably doesn’t want to pay for a gym membership for you. If you pay for your own membership, your parent may let you go. You may also be permitted to smooch freebie gym time (such as church youth group gym, or going with someone else as a guest to their membership), especially if you have your own transportation or bumming ride off of your friend. Unwillingness or inability to pay for a gym membership (and possibly drive you) is the most probable scenario. If your mom is just paranoid, try to get into school sports. Though your paranoid mom may not permit sports participation as permission slip is required and possibly also liability waiver. Some high school sports teams include gym time in their practices. Football especially (some high school even have a higher-end gym that is exclusively for varsity football player use only). Some soccer teams do gym time in preseason. Shot put / discus / hammer in track & field will also have gym time in practices both preseason and in-season.Some high school PE classes involve choosable sports / activities (by grading period or by semester), which could include weightlifting. Even a paranoid mom cannot prevent this. Even less preventable by paranoid moms is if you don’t have choosable activities in your high school PE and you just do a little bit of everything. This may include 2–4 weeks of weight training.

I want to play a sport, but my parents are always too busy. What can I do?

I don’t know much about your age or circumstances, but I imagine that you may also have other positive advocates in your life who you aren’t considering. This is NOT a knock against your parents. There are a lot of great, hard-working people out there just trying to survive and provide good food and shelter for their family, which can really tax their time, energy, and focus. Please consider letting them know your feelings on this topic before reaching out to one (or more) of the following for assistance:a grandparent, aunt, uncle or other member of your extended familyDo you go to school? Perhaps your teacher could help you with signups.Do you go to church? Perhaps a youth group leader could help you.Is there a Boys/Girls Club near your home? Perhaps a director there could help you.Do you have a friend who already plays for a team? Perhaps their parent could assist.Does your city have youth programs? Check their website for names and contact info. Most, if not all, employees are background-checked.Lastly, there are often youth league directors whose email contact info is on their webpage. All adults I know of who work in an official capacity for the league are background-checked and have a network of coaches, referees, and the like who all want to help young players like yourself enjoy sports. In short, let your parents know your intent, and make it easy for them to get things handed off. Perhaps write a sample email for them they can send to another parent or the league. Growing up, I was involved in a lot of activities that required a registration or permission slip. I could fill out all the info, asking question as mom cooked dinner, and put it in front of mom or dad for their signature. From what I’ve seen, things aren’t -quite- as simple with some of the requirements for online applications (give us your credit card info! Mwahahaha!)But don’t give up! There are people that will help you. You’ll just have to do a bit of detective work to get there. BOL2U!
