Is it ethical for your therapist to write you a letter of recommendation?There are certain things, such as dating a former client, that all psychotherapists might consider professionally unethical. When most people hear “licenses” they think of something like driver's licenses, which have moderate education and testing requirements and minimal bureaucratic nonsense, and wonder what is the big deal.When gun owners hear “licenses” they think of New York's Sullivan Act, pushed through by mob boss and Tammany Hall politician Big Tim Sullivan, who was tired having Italian gangsters shooting back at his Irish gangsters.They think of New York's premises permit, which can, well, be difficult and expensive:I did it! Successfully got a gun license in NYC.It was a 12+ month process, but after many applications and interviews, I finally got the NYC Pistol License!It involved:A 20 page application$500+ in fees - AMEX didn't work when I paid. Had to use Visa or Mastercard. How well connected? We don't know.But there was a scandal, a few years back, where a “fixer” was bribing police officers to get carry permits for his clients. Bribes in the range of $10,000. This was shut down quickly, when it was discovered, because the politicians were outraged that these crooked cops were charging less than they did.The major change in gun rights, over the past thirty years, has been the growth, year by year and state by state, of states that have reformed their carry permit laws to remove arbitrary discretion.It seems a rather innocuous idea - states have laws requiring permits to carry. These laws establish requirements as to background, training, etc.The reform is to require that permits be issued to anyone who meets the requirements. That we don't allow the issuing authority to deny without cause.We don't, after all, allow the DMV to refuse to issue a driver's license because they don't think someone really needs it.Since 1986 we've gone from this:To this:And Michael Bloomberg has been fighting us every step of the way. Fighting to preserve for government bureaucrats the authority to deny permits for any reason or none, and allowing them to retain the power to grant permits only to their friends and political supporters.So when he starts to talk about licensing, he has zero credibility.He doesn't want a reasonable licensing law to improve public safety, he wants an unreasonable licensing law so as to disarm as many people as he can manage, except for his political cronies.Because while he plans on keeping his guns, you don't need yours.
