While going through some code in our software I come across the word “idiot” and I get curious. Validation code behind SSN field had this: “some idiot boss put his secretary's ssn in wallets he sold now this is 40000 people's ssn”If val = "123456789" Or ...  val = "078051120" Or ' some idiot boss put his secretary's ssn in wallets he sold now this is 40000 people's ssn  val = "219099999" Or ' was used in an ad by the Social Security Administration ..  val = "999999999" Then  validationText = "Invalid Social Security Number"  Return False End If So I did some googling and found this on the SSA website:Social Security Cards Issued by WoolworthThe most misused SSN of all time was (078-05-1120). In 1938, wallet manufacturer the E. H. Ferree company in Lockport, New York decided to promote its product by showing how a Social Security card would fit into its wallets. A sample card, used for display purposes, was inserted in each wallet. Company Vice President and Treasurer Douglas Patterson thought it would be a clever idea to use the actual SSN of his secretary, Mrs. Hilda Schrader Whitcher.The wallet was sold by Woolworth stores and other department stores all over the country. Even though the card was only half the size of a real card, was printed all in red, and had the word "specimen" written across the face, many purchasers of the wallet adopted the SSN as their own. In the peak year of 1943, 5,755 people were using Hilda's number. SSA acted to eliminate the problem by voiding the number and publicizing that it was incorrect to use it. (Mrs. Whitcher was given a new number.) However, the number continued to be used for many years. In all, over 40,000 people reported this as their SSN. As late as 1977, 12 people were found to still be using the SSN "issued by Woolworth."Mrs. Whitcher recalled coming back from lunch one day to find her fellow workers teasing her about her new-found fame. They were singing the refrain from a popular song of the day: "Here comes the million-dollar baby from the five and ten cent store."Although the snafu gave her a measure of fame, it was mostly a nuisance. The FBI even showed up at her door to ask her about the widespread use of her number. In later years she observed: "They started using the number. They thought it was their own. I can't understand how people can be so stupid. For one noisy metal dog tags are a relic from the past and need to go. Even if your mangled body is found beyond all reconition and your dog tag's on/nearby. A DNA test will still be conducted to confirm it's actually you.Remember in basic when you had your shots and blood samples taken? That blood was entered into a federal database to identify your sack of remains, even decades after you rotted.Even our pet animals have better ID tags. A subdermal chip, that relays all the prudent information one would need to know. So, either DNA or subdermal tags should be the next move for the military. Given the lower causualty rates in modern warfare, compared to previous wars. The DNA reconition would be more cost effective then applying subdermal chips in every service member.The DNA tests would only need to be conducted on unrecognizable remains. With the total KIA in the past 15 years well under 10,000...how many do you think we're unrecognizable? The cost to run DNA tests on such small number of remains would be far less then installing a subdermal chip on every active service member.Remember they already do the DNA tests anyway, so why waste money on equipping noisy dog tags for every service member? It's a diehard tradition that doesn't serve a useful and functional purpose. A soldier is more likely to have his identity stolen from his dog tags, then have his remains identified. It's the age of information and we go walking around with tags that fall off an go missing with our full names and SSN.For soldiers deploying to another country, I can see the subdermal chip being installed. It would allow the enemy to identify you (dead or alive) and report it to your host nation. Plus, it won't fall off and limit your risk of identity theft. Of course the DNA data base would be the fail safe, just in case.Edit: added at a later date.The SSN will no longer be stamped on dog tags. Instead, the number which is currently on service members ID cards (CAC cards) will be used. The military is currently focusing on getting these new tags to members who are going to deploy to combat zones and will eventually phase out the SSN entirely.
