Wonderful diversions -- games, book discussions, topical lectures?No. Not even close.Truth be told?“The proof of the pudding is in the tasting" as they say. For 1.5 - 2 years I tasted MENSA. And I too often found its stew to be chock full of surprisingly underachieving and socially and emotionally challenged people desperately seeking to validate their self-importance by “being” rather than “doing.”I remained a member until recognizing the same personality-damaged traits in MENSAns from other chapters and concluding quickly (but perhaps unfairly or too harshly?) that an organization dedicated to nothing but “being” meant it would always lack a larger purpose.I realized such lack would inevitably drive out those either more secure and needing less extrinsic validation and those who would rather do something interesting or valued beyond merely “being” amid a crowded room of other “be-ers.”I realized the organization’s limited focus on self-status meant it would never amount to anything sustainably more — no truly entertaining or enlightening or worthy-accomplishment purpose.So, while staying in touch with some of those I enjoyed and valued, I bailed from MENSA and reinvested my social time in other social groups focused on doing things.
