PDF Editor FAQ
Is President Obama unpopular among US servicemen?
I'm long since out of the Marine Corps, but I still have a number of active duty friends and I frequent a (often lively) discussion board devoted to the last unit I was in, filled with former and active members of that unit.Politics isn't all that frequent a topic, but every once in awhile some idiot feels the need to post some story or meme which sets off a long political thread. So my account is based on the anecdotal sampling of Marines from a single unit ages 19-65 or so.And though it pains me, just as in the civilian world, demographics is a huge factor in who does and does not like the current President.Old white dudes often don't like him. Some are really, really angry towards him, to such a point that they seem to blame him for all their problems in life. They get very animated in their anger. It has even been suggested to me (a somewhat old white dude) by some of the more agitated sorts that I'm a bit treasonous if I defend him. That I'm "a traitor" or other nonsense. This is by no means all old white dudes (and I'd say it is predominantly mid-ranked enlisted men,) but they are a very vocal group. I tend to be of the opinion their various employment problems tend to be less Obama's fault, and more that they spend so much time angrily pounding a keyboard.Much less vocal (they don't tend to get as agitated and pound the keyboard with all caps,) but tending to support him solidly are the non-white older/former Marines. This represented probably half my unit, and they tend to be more supportive. But more in the line of "thumbs up" on posts favorable to the President. A thread will have 10 very angry white dude comments, each with 10 thumbs up from the same 10 guys. And then a single supportive comment, but with 20 thumbs up. The silent "thumbs up" majority if you will. Then you get the young guys. There seems to be more variety in this group. The active ones tend to steer clear of the arguments, especially the youngest. You get occasional comments, but they are usually more subdued. Often simply correcting incorrect information. That is because these guys have to serve next to their brothers. They are wise to avoid delving into a racist diatribe when half their unit is a different race. So again, there is a racial break, but it is far less pronounced.I've found certain topics also divide by age. A lot of old guys were angry about the end of "Don't ask, Don't tell," but the young, active guys seemed complete indifferent. Some old dudes had to share how "in their day" they never would allow gays. And how as soon as this happened, all hell would soon break out in barracks. Young guys really didn't seem to care.So in general, a lot of old white vets don't like (or seriously hate) him. Older and not as white tend to like him. The younger they get, the more they are fine with, or even like him. It seems anecdotally the "don't like" group is far more vocal in their anger, while the "like" camp tends to stay out of the yelling, but is possibly more numerous.
Does the US version of the COVID-19 diagnostic test differ from other country's COVID-19 diagnostic tests? It seems like other countries are able ramp up the number of available tests more quickly than the US can.
Yes, the US version of the COVID-19 diagnostic test differs from other country's COVID-19 diagnostic tests.Publicly available information suggests a delay in labs across the US using their own in-house developed tests + a faulty initial CDC test = delay in identifying COVID-19 cases across the USJanuary 31, 2020, is the day the US DHHS (Dept of Health & Human Services) declared a Public Health Emergency in the US for the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 disease (1).The WHO's 1st COVID-19 situation report on January 21, 2020, had a total of 282 confirmed cases with 278 from China (2).The WHO's 11th situation report on January 31, 2020, had a total of 9826 confirmed cases with 9720 from China (3).This means that the day the US declared its own public health emergency, most confirmed cases were still being reported from China and this gave the US plenty of time to prepare for and ramp up its SARS-CoV-2 detection capabilities or so one would have thought except it hasn't turned out that way.As Scott Gottlieb, the former FDA commissioner points out in a February 2, 2020, twitter thread (4), the public health emergency declaration created a Catch-22 situation vis-a-vis COVID-19 detection.Detecting the SARS-CoV-2 or indeed any other virus is fairly straightforward these days. Run an RT-PCR test that picks up and amplifies genetic sequences unique to that virus to high enough levels to register as specific signals in high-throughput machines. No virus, no signal amplification. All sorts of private labs, public health labs, hospitals can develop Laboratory Developed Tests or LDTS in a trice to detect SARS-CoV-2 except...once the US DHHS declares a public health emergency, all these labs now needed to get an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA to run their own tests.People with symptoms and understandably heightened fear may have wanted to get their samples tested for weeks but tests could only be performed at the CDC (the only one with FDA's EUA), which used what may have been unnecessarily strict criteria and a very strict rationing to decide who could or couldn't be tested. This brings us to the CDC's test.Politico reported back on February 20, 2020 (5),“Problems with a coronavirus test developed by the CDC have delayed the Trump administration's efforts to expand screening to state and local public health labs, more than two weeks after the FDA granted permission to distribute the CDC test nationwide.”Nothing had changed by February 26, 2020, when New York Magazine among others reported (6),“The CDC, with the FDA’s approval, had rapidly developed a test kit for the coronavirus, but after shipping it to state laboratories, additional testing of the kit determined that it had a faulty component and had to be scrapped. The CDC has been actively developing a new test kit since then, but no one seems to know when it will be finished and distributed”Things changed only on February 29, 2020, when (from 7, announcement itself at 8),“the FDA announced an “accelerated policy … to achieve more rapid testing capacity in the United States,” allowing academic hospital labs capable of performing high-quality testing to develop and begin using their own tests to detect COVID-19. Before now, hospital labs weren’t sent test kits by the CDC and the FDA required an extensive review process even if the hospitals had internally validated their tests. Under the new policy, the FDA review will still be required, but labs will be able to start using their diagnostics once they are internally validated.”For example, New York's Wadsworth Center (9) got exactly such an authorization from the FDA on February 29, 2020,Problem #1 seems to have been delayed EUAs so labs around the country weren't developing and running their own in-house developed tests to detect SARS-CoV-2 in samples from their communities. Why the delay? FDA balked at earlier authorization or labs balked at submitting data to meet the more onerous criteria for getting EUA? Who knows.Problem #2 seems to have been that the CDC initially developed a faulty test to detect SARS-CoV-2 and then delayed rolling out an accurate one.Meantime people with suggestive symptoms and their samples started to pile up across the country.Problems #1 and 2 together mean SARS-CoV-2 may have been spreading for weeks across the US with no one the wiser. Here's why that could prove to be a serious problem.Imagine a person infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus as a red jellybean.Since humans weren't ever exposed to SARS-CoV-2 earlier, red jellybeans, even healthy ones, would lack memory immune responses (prior immunity) and specific drugs to quickly reduce their infectious viral loads and would thus remain infectious for longer than for other viruses they may have encountered previously. As long as red jellybeans remain undetected across a community, the healthier ones among them are likely to go about their day meeting all and sundry and passing on SARS-CoV-2.Further, no prior immunity nor specific drugs makes each exposed person a potential red jellybean, a situation unlike other common respiratory viruses such as the flu. Some of those red jellybeans may be older and have health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immunosuppression because of cancer treatment, etc. Data out of China suggests such individuals are at much higher risk of severe complications such as pneumonia and even death from SARS-CoV-2.Thus, even though data so far suggests that the vast majority of red jellybeans would recover from SARS-CoV-2, no fuss, no muss, the longer it gets to spread across communities undetected, the higher the chance of red jellybeans who could die, i.e., avoidable deaths. This is why nipping spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the bud requires using tests to quickly and systematically detect it in at least red jellybeans with a higher likelihood of spreading it. That would mean testing symptomatic people across the country. Earlier a case is detected, isolated and treated (even if only with palliative care), lower the risk of community spread. Extensive and quick gumshoe work to ensure accurate contact tracing and testing would then further reduce spread. If even asymptomatic carriers could be detected and isolated, that would greatly improve chances of completely stopping spread of SARS-CoV-2 but that may not be realistic since that would hit up against the sensitivity limits of detection tests.China's draconian and unprecedented region-wide quarantine measures bought the rest of the world time and only time will tell whether the US used this time wisely to halt/prevent spread of SARS-CoV-2 or whether testing delays make COVID-19 spread in the US the way it has across Iran and Italy.References1. How do I score a 95+ in class 12 board economics?
So here I'll be writing the tips to achieve the target which is the only achievement I got till date. 😁So 95+ in Economics? Hmm....what if I say you can even score a perfect 100 in it. No, I'm not excessively speaking as I scored 100 in Economics in 2018. At that time, I had to study Micro and Macro Economics in 12th but I will try to give some very good suggestions related to your IED part of Economics as well. You will surely feel that you got something very beneficial for your preparation by reading this. I’ll be writing a very long answer so please read only when you can fully dedicate your 10 minutes.Disclaimer - I'm not in anyway related to the promotion activities of the author's/publication's books I have mentioned below. So lets come straight to the point. I will start with the basics and then examination tips and tricks. You can even follow these tips for your Business Studies paper.1. Create Interest in the subject ❤No matter how much you work hard, if you are not interested in the subject, it will always feel like burden. Remember "the more you create interest towards the subject, the less it will create panic in preparation and exams time".2. Conceptual Knowledge is Must 💭Only cramming up the theory will not give you good results. Firstly gain full understanding of concepts by taking classes/self-study and then prepare according to exam orientation. Remember smart work will give effective results only once hard work is done.3. Respect the Subject 🙏Most of the students spend their whole day in solving Accounts and Maths problems and study Economics in last 2-3 months. Never do this. Give respect to each subject. Even 1-2 hour on a daily basis for 4-5 days in a week can do needful. I had completed Economics in starting 4 months of Class 12th.4. Book-Reading 📚One can notice that majority of students learn concepts from classes, make notes and just revise the notes. I will suggest please read the subject book at least once. It will not only make your concepts more clear, it will also give you an additional benefit for preparation of answer writing points in the exam. I will suggest Sandeep Garg (Dhanpat Rai Publications) books for Economics, best for the subject. I still have these books, gives positive vibe to me till date. Have a look.5. Make Summary Notes 📝It is the most important part of your learning. Well in most of the cases, students are provided notes by their teachers in classes, follow them with full dedication. I will suggest you to also prepare your own summary notes. This will create almost a perfect grasp on the subject. You will be able to revise the concepts multiple times. I remember that I was able to revise the whole subject in only 1 day with help of these notes. For example - In Macro & Micro there are a lot of topics of difference between X and Y etc. I made a 2 page summary for all those difference between topics so that I'm able to revise all those topics only in a few minutes. Have a look6. Give Mock Tests 📄It is MUST. How you can play a cricket match without net practice? Like this you also have to give test multiple times. Never miss your unit tests, pre-boards etc. If possible try to conduct 1 hour weekly test of some topics. It proved highly effective to me. Not only I gave the unit tests & pre boards, but also attempted some sample papers of Arihant & TogetherWith books too. I also solved some special and tricky questions of NCERT book. Besides this I solved one of the model papers which came in local newspapers in the examination time as well as mock tests which took place in another school. I have that newspaper model test paper still with me. Have a look :D7. Track your Syllabus 🏃I used to write down all my syllabus in short form on a paper and tick those topics which I have revised already. It gives positive motivation as well as an overview of the subject becomes available in front of you. I also made a seperate list of topics which contains graphs and schedule things in answer-writing points. With help of this list I practiced those topics multiple times. You can see from the image below how I did it8. Utilisation of Preparation Gap ⏰No matter how much you have studied in the last 1 year, you should also effectively utilise the preparation gap for exam. Be consistent, study as much as possible for you, revise multiple times, write the important concepts again and again.9. During Examination 👨🏫Be positive. Make perfect use of your first 15 minutes. Mark those questions on which you have full confidence and attempt them first. Take a watch with you. Allocate 1.5 minute for each 1 mark of paper you attempt so that you are left with 30 minutes in the end. Focus on presentation, make sure that your work is good and neat. Draw diagrams and charts related to the concepts asked in every 4 or more marks question. If you are finding any problem in a question and taking more time than expected, leave it and attempt it after the rest questions have been answered. Never leave a question unanswered, I repeat never. Answer the 'difference between' questions in tabular form. Solve the national income question step-wise. You can make your answer-writing points and diagrams like this10. Indian Economic Development 😮I had studied this subject in Class 11th. This subject was very interesting for me as it tell us about the development phase of Indian economy after independence, the basic aspects on which the economy runs, challenges faced by our economy. I found it good in learning, but it created panic in exam time. So it is good to gain knowledge but also we should have a perfect strategy for exam orientation. Unlike Micro and Macro, it is purely theory. You have no option but to remember it as much as you can. I will suggest you to follow the tool of memory technique to remember the topics for long-term, in addition to the tips mentioned above for the subject. I'm currently studying in CA-Intermediate. I also have to learn a lot of theory in Audit & EIS subjects which I remember with help of memory techniques. See it's not only about cramming up, you have to first understand the topic and then apply the memory technique according to yourself. Use this tool only for some few topics which are very hard for you to remember. You can watch a video on youtube related to this. That's all I can tell you with my experience. All the best for your preparation.Hope you find it helpful. If yes, please upvote 👍Thanks for reading 😍🙏Image Source : My Gallery 😃
