PDF Editor FAQ

Have you ever been treated differently at an airport because of your passport?

Not because of my passport - but because of the colour of my passport cover.A few years ago I was flying in to Malawi. I had been looking after some projects there and had been travelling back and forwards on a multiple-entry business visa. However my visa had expired and before I was able to get it renewed I got called on short notice to go there to deal with some issues that had come up.No problem I thought — I’ll just get a tourist visa on arrival, which would be valid for thirty days, I was only going to be there for a week or so, so that would be plenty of time. If there was going to be any issue, then I’d get it sorted at the immigration office in Lilongwe once I was there.Anyway the visa-on-arrival process takes a while — not that long but the day I flew in, two tourist aircraft had just landed at the same time and there was a queue of a hundred or so people all waiting at the immigration desk to be issued with their visas. It looked like I was going to be there for a couple of hours at least.Although there was only one immigration desk open, there was another desk with a sign above it saying “diplomatic and VIP passports”. There were three people in that queue, all guys around my age wearing the usual ex-pats-in-Africa “uniform” of cotton shirt and tan chinos — just as I was.Now a U.S. diplomatic passport has a black cover with “diplomatic passport” stamped on the outside, but mine was the standard red UK passport. However it was in a black leather cover with an embossed logo printed on the outside. So I walked up to the three guys waiting in the diplomatic channel and said “hi”. I was chatting with one of the guys who it turned out was a junior diplomat working in the embassy in Lilongwe as were the other two, when the immigration officer said “passports!” and the three American diplomats handed theirs over. The officer said “you too, hurry now.” So I passed mine over with theirs. He looked briefly at the first one and then stamped all of them including mine with a stamp that said VIP/Diplomat arrival. It took me all of two minutes to pass through the diplomatic channel because I had a black leather cover on my passport. This:Compared to this:

Do presidents and world leaders have to go through immigration and customs and get their passports stamped, etc. when they visit other countries on official state business?

No. They are granted consular courtesies by the receiving government. They can go from plane to plane-side vehicle on the tarmac, and then straight to their hotel or meeting. Same with all key staff. However, everyone’s passports still need stamping. One staffer’s job is to collect all the VIP passports, pass them to the appropriate receiving country’s official, who then gets them stamped and passes them back to the staffer. Of course, that staffer is junior, and the VIPs don't wait until all that is done.

Who can get a VIP passport in the world?

No one issuing VIP passport. Only there are three types of passports.1.Regular2.Official3.Diplomatic.
