My son, age 3, came home from preschool with an envelope that he proudly handed me. He watched expectantly for me to open it.I opened it up, and saw a bunch of tiny misshapen pieces of colored paper.I had no idea what it was, but my son clearly felt proud of it, so I “oooooed” and “aaaahed” appropriately and gave him a heartfelt “thank you”. He gave me another proud smile and turned away to go play.After he was asleep I pondered the gift, and finally realized what those tiny slips of paper must have been.They were slips of paper that he cut up himself. For the past few months, he’d been working really hard to learn how to use scissors, and clearly he had now learned how to use them.A truly impressive gift.

EnChroma Color Blindness Glasses.My dad is color blind. It's never been a big deal at all, and hardly ever comes up.One day, probably around February, I was reading a buzzfeed article about a man who “saw the color of his children's eyes for the first time” or something similar. At the end, there was a video that showed a man getting a pair of sunglasses and apparently seeing colors for the first time ever.I immediately looked into the brand, Enchroma, and saw all the options. I researched deuteroanomaly color blindness (my dad’s type) extensively. I memorized every page on the Enchroma website, I looked into all of the different types of glasses and their prices. I looked at the frames and debated what kind my dad would like best. I planned how much money I would save and how much I would be able to make in order to buy it by Father's Day.I showed my mom, and she agreed it would be a great idea. I don't actually remember what went wrong, but we didn't end up getting it for Father's Day. All I remember is being very upset. But we planned it all over again, saved money, and bought it for him for Christmas.He wears them all the time. I remember how after he got them, he went on a drive and texted me, sitting at a green light, about how incredible it was that traffic lights actually had color. He sat through multiple traffic cycles in our neighborhood, watching the light colors change. I remember how he was driving me to school one morning, and he saw his first sunrise in color. I remember seeing him walk slowly up and down the street, stopping every 5 steps to look at a new green plant or red flower. The red and green Christmas lights. He was amazed, and I was incredibly excited.(He calls me Liz because of my middle name)The best gift I've ever given is definitely the gift of color. I think that I've gotten about as much out of it as my dad has, because of how amazing it is to see a part of life that's completely normal to us.Edit: I really appreciate all the comments. Really. It's really sweet that all of you think I'm a great daughter. But I just want to clarify: I was in no way thinking about myself while buying them or writing this answer. This isn't about me, it's about my dad. I don't know if I would have been able to see them and not buy them.
