What is the most wrong someone has been when guessing your age?

“Hey, go back to your seat!”, a 7th-grade teacher barked at me.I was at a middle school science fair; Not mine, of course, but one of my brothers. The area was crowded, and I was trying to get away from this teacher, but she was following me foot to foot.“Hey, hey, chill, I’m not in middle sch-”, I tried replying back.I was trying to get to my mom, specifically trying to ask if I could take her car and go grab some food; I was starving.“Sweetie, what’s your name, and who’s your homeroom teacher?”.Tch.“Okay, listen, I don’t actually go here, I’m just here for my broth-”.“Sweetie, just give me your name, first and last”.I was getting annoyed.“Ma’am, listen. I. Do. Not. Go. He-”.She tried grabbing my hand. I swatted her away.“LADY. I’m here for my brother, okay? I’m not a student here!”She look startled.“May I speak to your guardian?”“No, it’s okay, I forgive you”, I joked, and ran off.Later that day, when we got home, my brother came up to me and asked me:“Did a teacher come up to you and ask for your homeroom teacher?”“Yeah…how’d you know?”, I asked.“She came up to me and asked if I had a sister in 6th grade; I instantly knew it was you”.“Hiii, how has your day been?”My “twin”(everyone thinks we’re twins or he’s older) brother and I were at Walmart, and it was our turn for the checkout. The girl was nice; smiling, asking about our day, etc.“Been a tough day, right? The first day of school and all…”, she asked.“Yeah, I guess”, my brother replied.“First day of high school?”My brother nodded. She turned to me.“Don’t worry, 8th grade is gonna be an easy year. I can guarantee it!”.“Hahahaha…I’m not in 8th…I’m in 11th…ha..ha”, I sheepishly replied. Her face turned redder than the strawberries she was checking.“I’m so sorry! I thought he was older than you!”.“You’re good”.Yes, I may look 12.No, I am not 12.Yes, my brother is 2 inches taller than me.No, I’m 2 years older than him.Seriously, y’all. The struggle is so. Freaking. Real.PSA!I’m not 12 >:(

What has your child’s school done that got you so mad, you went in and read the riot act to the teacher or principal?

This is my brother’s story, but I’m just a minor bit player in it —High school gym class, early 70s. My brother is also a twerpish kid, and got picked on a lot. After class, guys would use these toilets but then never flush them. The gym teacher would pick (on) someone at random and have them flush the toilets. One day, it was my brother’s turn to get picked on and he said “no.” “What?” said the gym teacher. My brother said, “No, I didn’t use any of these toilets and I’m not going to clean up someone else’s mess.”As you can expect, the situation escalated to the point that the Assistant Principal (for Discipline) was notified, parents notified, and a meeting was set up in the AP’s office. The problem was…Norm, the Assistant Principal, was a member of the Kiwanis Club, as was my dad, and at a Kiwanis meeting the night before the meeting in the AP’s office, Norm says to my dad, in front of others, “Looks like we’re meeting about your son tomorrow, right?” with a kind of laugh. Har har kind of stuff. The next day didn’t go well. Dad meets with Norm, the gym teacher and my brother in Norm’s office. Before anyone says anything, my dad expresses his displeasure to Norm. “Norm, don’t you ever do anything like that to me in public again” and got worse from there. The discussion about the toilet incident went something like this:Dad: “What’s the issue?”Gym teacher: “He wouldn’t do something I asked him to.”Dad: “What did you ask him to do?”Gym teacher: “Flush toilets after gym class.”Dad: “Why, did he use any of those toilets?”Gym teacher: “No.”Dad: “Then I don’t see why he should flush them either.”I really don’t know what happened at that point, but my brother wasn’t disciplined or suspended.I arrived in high school a few years later, and I never crossed paths with this gym teacher until…my senior year, this gym teacher was my homeroom teacher. First day of class, he’s reading down through the list, and he calls out my name:Gym teacher: “Guy Klose?”Me: “Yes?”He pauses for a moment, and then says, “Do you have an older brother named John?”Me: “Yes.”That’s the first and last time he ever spoke to me.I didn’t know the toilet story at the time. I still think it’s pretty funny.

What does a homeroom teacher do?

This depends on the school. Homeroom teacher is an old term so schools continue to use it, but the purpose of a home room can be very different among schools. When I taught at the junior high school, we changed the name from "homeroom" to "advisory" and the name "homeroom teacher" to "advisor."the oldest use for a homerom teacher was to create a place for students to gather for the bureaucracy of the schol day. We led the Pledge, made announcements, took attendance, took lunch counts, and said something encouraging. Then we sent the students to their first period class. Homeroom could last from five to ten minutes.when the district installed closed circut televisions in each room, we added a student produced news and announcement segment to the homeroom schedule. We even experimented with a professional newscast prepared specifically for schools.Later, we ended the homeroom class entirely and just extended first period to allow the office to soundcast the pledge and announcements from the office. After the staff spent two years planning a new curriculum and school organization, we retuned to the honeroom, now called advisory. We created it so that a set of students would have at least one teacher for two years whose job it was to counsel the student, keep up with communications with the home, and be an advocate and representative for that student with the school and help him with anything he needed. I remember a parent who was unsure how to handle a problem the student was having at school. That parent came to me as the student's advisor. Together we created a strategy to handle the problem. In another case the family could not afford glasses for the students. When I found out, I sent them the district forms to obtain both eye exams and glasses at no cost.I checked with my old district. At no level do home rooms or advisory classes exist any longer. I guess if the state doesn't mandate a test for something, the district doesn't do it!
