I received the full £30 weekly allowance when I was studying for my A levels (EMA).Before this, I do not ever remember walking into a bookstore and being able to buy the study materials I needed, or even having a choice in what I wanted to eat for lunch. After the allowance, I would become giddy when simply buying a new pen, I'd whiz through the mathematics practice question booklet in excitement and I'd be totally absorbed by the sine, cosine and tangent buttons on my new scientific calculator. It was awesome, my love for learning continued.£30 a week made me feel wealthy and more importantly, happy. It took care of my worries.I think wealth generally makes people happier. It's the same idea as above, it reduces stress and anxiety in situations that would otherwise deeply affect us.However, accumulating wealth to simply increase resources, with no purpose, no backstory, well...I don't think that can generate as much happiness like the feeling you get as your crush smiles at you, or your parents tell you how proud you make them feel. £1m in our accounts may make us smile for a few days, but insecurity and being discontent usually follows.To me, my wealth of life experiences has had a far greater impact on my happiness compared to material wealth.Doing what we love makes us happy, wealth is a side-effect.

The rationale is pretty simple and as others have explained -The fact that the UK has been a net contributor is irrelevantThe UK has made financial commitments which it is expected to honour (and it will benefit from).So why is this so complicated?Well there are two aspects to this. There is the political issue. The UK government simply cannot be seen as giving away billions to the EU - it really does not fit very well with their narrative of how Brexit is supposed to work.Secondly, though there is simply the fact that disentangling the budgetary obligations is hard, a lot of decisions have to be made before you can actually come up with a figure. This is why the question on the negotiating table is not how much is going to be paid, but how is the bill going to be split?Let me give you a few of the difficult questions which will need to be addressed:How is the UK going to ensure the pensions of UK civil servants who have worked for the EU? Are they just going to leave UK citizens without pensions?What about investment projects that the EU is currently undertaking in the UK? Say the 225 million pound investment in the Galloper wind farm in Suffolk. Should the investment continue, or should it be stopped and the UK receive a rebate instead?What about overhead costs which are incurred due to the UK decision on Brexit? For instance, the cost of breaking the lease of the EMA in Canary Warf?There are hundreds of projects where financial commitments have been made, in some cases it is possible to disentangle the expenses from the UK but in others it is not… how will it all work out?
