I’d like to address the “anti-science” part:A conservative republican scientist in the State of Georgia actually argued against a proposed solar panel farm, stating that solar panel farms “use up the sun”, and will reduce crop yields by stealing photosynthesis from surrounding crops.A republican politician who is also a physician claimed that it was impossible for a woman who is raped to become pregnant, as their bodies can “shut down” and prevent pregnancy if they’re raped.In the face of overwhelming evidence and the support of 97 percent of climate scientists, the republicans continue to be the only political party on earth to deny the existence of global warming. Donald Trump stated his belief that Global Warming is “a hoax created by the Chinese” during his campaign.Creationists, who believe that the earth is 6000 years old, recently completed a “scale replica” of Noah’s Ark, complete with dinosaurs (how did he handle the velociraptors?).Bill Nye,”The Science Guy” was booed at an event in Texas (R) after stating that the moon reflects light from the sun.Sorry, but it’s not “a wash”. This is just a sample of why republicans are not only criticized by “liberals”, but by anyone who actually believes in science at all. The examples I provided above can be easily verified. Yet, your statement that “liberals believe there are more than 2 genders” is a gross generalization, and neither addresses nor excuses the disturbing contempt for science and rationality found in many conservative circles.UPDATE:Thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to read my post, whether you liked it or not.I have had so many responses raising various issue that I didn’t think it fair to make people wade through all the comment to read my responses to them, so I thought I’d address them here.The conservative scientist:There is an article on the internet claiming that scientists believe that solar panel farms will use up the sun that was proven to be false. I was not referencing that article, but an article in The Roanoke-Crowan News Herald (a real newspaper) about a town council meeting where someone raised that concern (they must have read the fake article).The conservative politician:I realized that Congressman Todd Akin was not a physician shortly after I wrote the above post (I was thinking of someone else), but was beaten to my correction by some respondents. I stand corrected. Congressman Todd Akin however, was quoting a conservative anti birth control physician who did make that claim.The Doctor Who Taught Todd Akin All About Legitimate Rape is A Real Guy. And He's Crazy.The fact that an elected politician would make such an outlandish and sexist claim at all still speaks volumes.Climate Change:“James L. Powell, a former member of the National Science Board and current executive director of the National Physical Science Consortium, analyzed published research on global warming and climate change between 1991 and 2012 and found that of the 13,950 articles in peer-reviewed journals, only 24 rejected anthropogenic global warming”While the exact percentage of supporters to detractors may vary by a small amount, it stands that the republican party is the only political party in the world to not recognize global warming as man made and a threat to life on earth. Conservatives news channels always have someone in opposition to global warming when addressing the subject in order to give the impression that its existence is a 50–50 split (it’s not).Creationists:Yes, there is a group that believes that the earth is 6000 years old, and did create a replica of Noah’s Ark with dinosaurs:Noah's Ark, Complete With Dinosaurs, Opens In KentuckyBill Nye:He’s Bill Nye, The Science Guy, and he was booed.The real issue is not only the above examples, but the juggernaut of ignorance that has been put forward by conservative groups across America (and the internet). It’s almost as if they’ve found a way to weaponize ignorance. For example, one of the respondents complained that liberals won’t admit that babies are human. Of course, babies are human, but the American anti abortion movement has all but stopped mentioning the word “fetus”, using only “baby” no matter what stage of pregnancy they’re referring to. It’s as if they want people to believe that at the moment of conception, there’s a microscopic, fully formed, aware, alert, baby that simply grows and grows until it’s delivered. Any display of science that is not in league with a specific political agenda is met with a form of aggressive ignorance in an attempt to diffuse that argument.“I love the poorly educated.”-Donald Trump

When I was still a scientist who worked in the lab, I had a running joke with the other scientists. “Hey, guys! They found water on Mars!” The others knew the right response was feigned surprise. “Whoa! Really? No way!”They discovered water on Mars no less than 17 times in the 6 years that I worked in that lab and had that running gag with my colleagues. Maybe they discovered water on the moon a few of those times. We lost track.Public interest news media and true scientific discoveries are poorly connected to one another. Real scientific discovery happens very very quietly. It's like Elmer Fudd hunting wabbits. Shhhh. We don't want to scare the results away.A scientist doesn't “discover” something unless some scientific publication allows them to have a forum with other peer scientists. This is called peer review. Often this forum consists of a scientist writing up their results along with other results that they collected recently into a nice story of related results.Then that draft paper is given to others scientists (sometimes strangers, sometimes friends) and it is criticized thoroughly. That's the “right” thing to do. Criticize the heck out of another scientist's science.Only after holes have been poked in the science and patched back up again with stated caveats and qualifiers does the science see the public eye. And by “public” I mean the scientific public. These papers are written in a language that most people can't read--science. It's a lot like legalese.The news doesn't catch wind of science right away. Often there's a period of time where there's a gentlemen's agreement that the science article can stay in the science world before other public interest articles can write about it.Then, after all that, the public might just hear about a scientific discovery. Maybe. A year or three have gone by at this point.You see, most scientific discoveries are just too damned boring for regular news media. Regular people (non scientists) need some kind of context that they understand before they can care about a scientific finding. So, discoveries like a finding a chemical like methane on Mars just isn't newsworthy unless some journalist can add the so what? part of the story.When a scientist finds methane on Mars, there's usually a single line in the whole discovery paper that suggests maybe there's a slight chance that methane might kind of suggest that life could have existed in some form on Mars at some point. Super wishy washy.You see, science is about fact and fact is very very narrow. Fact is never as big as “life on Mars.” Fact is more like, “we saw a methane signal using three different types of assays that we used to detect methane in a significant number of the samples we tested.” Fact is what and how. Fact is never why or so what.So yes, all science is oversold to the public because the public wouldn't give a care about it if it wasn't over sold. The public cares about so what. The public cares about why. Science is simply the what and how. To get to why and so what, you have to add some showmanship and that part comes from journalists like me.Peer review and the publication process
