That math (e.g. calculus) is a difficult subject to teach.I had it out with the principal of the local high school on this. The "regular" calculus teacher took a leave of absence due to personal reasons and a string of successively worse supply teachers came in to teach my daughter's class. When she told me about the situation I went to meet with the principal to understand what he was going to do about the situation given that Calculus was a required class for virtually anyone university bound.At one point he said something like -- "Although they are all professional teachers, you know, calculus is a difficult subject so it's hard to get great supply teachers".Can't tell you know infuriated I was with this comment. With respect to difficulty, I looked at him and said:"How difficult is it? It hasn't changed in 300 years. The calculus taught today is exactly the same as it was last year, the year before that etc. It's exactly the same as you and I learned in high school. How hard could it be to get teachers for it.Biology has changed dramatically in the last 30 years, yet no one complains that the new biology can't be taught?"He had no response.
