PDF Editor FAQ

In which of these 3 would you rather live, Sweden, Germany, or Ireland? Why?

I am an American who has lived in each of these three countries. Here are my impressions:SwedenGeneral social philosophy: Live quietly so as not to disturb others.I found Sweden to be a very live-and-let-live type of society. The up side is that you can find your tribe and enjoy yourselves together. The down side is that the shared value of ignoring people (you don’t know) in order to ensure the other’s personal freedom makes for a restrained, reserved, repressed society. I found that some people lacked social skills, lacked ability to express true emotion, and had some tendency towards melancholy. There’s something essentially human about acknowledging the variety of people you may meet on the street, learning something about their perspective, having the opportunity to feel engaged and uplifted by them, and having a general feeling that we’re all in this together. This element to one’s feeling of wellbeing I found to be lacking, though can be alleviated through finding your own community.Practical side: The economy is doing great, but finding a job can still take quite a bit of time and effort. It is very difficult for an employer to fire an employee, so care is taken at the outset to ensure a good placement. Housing tends to be quite affordable and at a *very high standard.* A Swedish apartment is a thing that dreams are made of. Rentals can be hard to find in popular areas. Foods that are considered staples like potatoes, onions, coffee, cheese, fish, kaviar ost (ack!) are quite affordable. However, going out to a restaurant is expensive and not really all that popular except in large cities. I missed a good cafe / restaurant / pub culture while I was there. The natural environment is right out of a storybook. The freedom to hike wherever you wish (allemansrätt) is simply unbelievable. I find the Swedish, self-deprecating sense of humor to be so clever and entertaining.GermanyGeneral social philosophy: Be sure to check what you’re supposed to be doing and how you’re supposed to be feeling in every situation. In Germany, I got the feeling that for everything there was a “right” way. Often times this made for a very comprehensive and understandable way for doing things. It can be nice to know what to expect. Also, I tended to admire what the society defined as “right”. I don’t think I’ve lived anywhere where I felt more aware of and engaged with the major issues facing the world. However, when you find yourself on the outside, either disagreeing with the consensus or having found an exception to the rule, it can be uncomfortable. I also discovered there the concept of communal guilt. I think the society took on guilt-at-large post WWII, and applies it to other situations as well. As an American there in 2003–2004, I personally was to be lectured (repeatedly) on the Iraq invasion despite that I was against the war. I generally found the vast array of societal obligation, guilt as a product of my nationality, and the formality to be exhausting. Perhaps if I were to return as an older, more confident person, I wouldn’t be as bothered by this. Right now, I like just visiting, since a tourist who knows the language is widely appreciated.Practical side: Also a strong economy with attractive jobs. Apartment rentals are more plentiful and tend to not be too expensive. There seemed to be a larger variety of foods available and at very good prices. Cafe culture is wonderful. I have so many good memories sitting at a cozy table with a delicious cappuccino. Anything you have to do is well documented and works according to the rules. If you take the time to learn the system, you can navigate your way through anything. The abundance of paved cycling trails was sensational for me. When out hiking, the wilderness, though beautiful, sometimes didn’t feel “wild” enough. I loved the acclaim for literature and culture: bookstores galore, beautiful pens and papers, local orchestras, well-attended exhibits.IrelandGeneral social philosophy: None of us are very special or exceptional, so we may as well just enjoy ourselves and not take things too seriously. This is a fun way to live. The problem is that they aren’t actually telling themselves the truth. The Irish have a lot to say regarding Brexit, and are finding themselves on the world’s stage more and more often. I love reading the plentiful Irish editorials deriding Dubliners as pompous and overreaching, and celebrating the contented, mirthful, and “true” Irish life in the countryside. Again, I’ll just say that I’m not sure this is so “true” anymore. In general, I find living in Ireland an excellent cure for stress and anxiety. I love the small, daily interactions with people full of fun, humor and kindness. The basic attitude is that “it’ll be fine.” For the most part, it is good to not sweat the small stuff. The problem arises when you truly need to fix an issue and advocate for yourself. The relaxed environment also means that regulations are often not followed as written, and it’s hard for an outsider to decipher when to follow the rules and when following them will put you at a disadvantage.Practical side: A very strong job market in the cities, especially Dublin. Housing in Dublin can be extremely tricky. Rents tend to be much more expensive than buying. With a culture strongly linked to farming, it’s easy to find fresh, local and delicious staples. Dublin is trying to offer diverse culinary options, but for the most part, I don’t find it to be all that worth it. Pub culture is wonderful, though - teeming with history, authenticity, music and good craic. I have a particular fondness of driving on the small, squiggly roads in the countryside. Breathtaking scenery. It’s easy to find the connection to Ireland’s past even with its recent history of unprecedented growth. People are exceptionally friendly and polite. Even Dublin can feel just like a small town. I love that a witty and poetic writing style is still ok here. Articles are often tongue-in-cheek and with sweeping vocabulary. I’m so tired of the dumbed-down writing style that came along with recent trends in web design, etc.So in regards to which place I’d rather live, I’ll totally dodge the question and say that I’m glad I’ve lived in each, and would likely live in each again depending on the life circumstance. Sweden is a great place to raise a kid, write a book. Germany is a great place to enjoy culture, learn about the world and go inline skating. Ireland is a great place to build a career and enjoy a sense of community.

Did Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern ever say there were certain foods they absolutely would not eat?

As most of my readers know, I’m a hardcore foodie, and I do follow the lives and tastes of many of the notable chefs out there. But among these, Anthony Bourdain was one that always stood out to me. His adventures, honesty and pure sense of adventure was something that could only be admired.(from Medium)I’m not as much informed on Andrew Zimmern admittedly, but since his no-eat list is pretty simple, I’ll just cover that first.(from Twitter)Now while I can understand that accursed horror of a dead corpse fruit that is durian, I’m a little surprised by walnuts, raw cookie dough and hot oatmeal. Maybe he had too much of it as a kid?(from YouTube - Great Big Story)I can’t even go NEAR Durian, and this is despite part of my heritage being Indonesian, which practically worships this fruit. To me, it has more value as a deadly weapon to drop from roofs than to eat it.Now back to Bourdain, where there’s quite a few items he wouldn’t touch despite having one of the most daring palates ever, and here they are:AIRLINE FOOD(from the travel)He just wouldn’t touch them. To him, they were a travesty, just like the next item.CHICKEN NUGGETS(from NY Post)Here’s what he says about the Nuggets:"It's the terrible appalling sameness and mediocrity of the chain restaurants that I hate, the food tastes the same in McDonald's in Australia as it does in California - it is anonymous and soul-destroying."[1]ANYTHING GLUTEN-FREEUnless you were genuinely suffering from Celiac Disease, and had an actual doctor’s diagnosis, then you didn’t DARE mention offering a gluten-free lifestyle diet. It simply insults the chef in him to the core.TRUFFLE OILHoo boy. His hatred for Truffle Oil, which is pretty much entirely artifical, is legendary. He described it as “edible as Astroglide”.[2](from YouTube)RANCH DRESSINGThis was a weird one, but he simply found it to be way too pedestrian. He wouldn’t touch it, PERIOD.(from Eating Well)WELL-DONE BEEFHe was a chef in his own right and a graduate of the famous Culinary Institute of America. And well done beef to him was practically a crime against humanity to him. He’d rather toss it than eat it.(from Traegar Grills)CLUB SANDWICHESThis one is a little weird. He believed that these sandwiches were PERFECTLY fine WITHOUT THE THIRD SLICE. But if you had that third slice, it just made it revolting for him!?HOLLANDAISE SAUCE(from Real Housemoms)In his book, Kitchen Confidential, he just didn’t see the appeal to the sauce. He considered it a bacteria factory that’s just begging to get people sick.EDIT: I was reminded in the comments of another reason why he hated it. The man just hated BRUNCH. He hated the whole concept. And Eggs Benny, a regular staple in Brunch buffets, could often be laying around for awhile and just builds up in bacteria.SWORDFISH(from Behind the French Menu)Apparently Swordfish is born with some sort of special parasite, and if that parasite isn’t removed properly, you can get really really sick. It was because of that that he was warned to stay clear from it, and always did.BURGER IN A BRIOCHE BUN(from the Daily Meal)To Bourdain, when you want a burger, you want that taste to be pure. You want to taste that succulent tasty beef. A cow died proudly to feed you, so why slap Bessie in the face with a sweet bun that wipes out that succulence. This to him was a cardinal beef sin.VEGAN & VEGETARIAN FOODHe considered Vegan/Vegetarian food and the whole lifestyle to be ridiculous. Remember, this is a man that pulled no punches on anything, and this was definitely one of them. Basically, to him, being a Vegan or a Vegetarian was to be missing the glory of meat and essentially foolishly naive.(from Cooking Light - Smoked Tempeh)ENGLISH MUFFINS(from The Kitchn)Remember, Bourdain hated Hollandaise, and as such, Eggs Benedict by relation. English muffins, he found to be weird, and either got too soggy or too hard and dehydrated. Sooooo… this was just something he found ridiculous and revolting. There’s other foods here and there, but these were the most notable of all. He was a hell of a personality with a unique palate that could manage food that would make goats puke, yet, was appalled by some of the popular trends that thrilled the average diner (his rant on pumpkin spice and juice cleanses is simple and memorable). And with all that, what better way to end this answer.“I would like to see the pumpkin spice craze drowned in its own blood. Quickly. Juice — I don't understand the juice cleanse. I mean, if you've ever had a colonoscopy, the doctor gives you something that will cleanse you right quick, so I don't really understand juice cleanses. I believe celiac disease is a very serious ailment, and if you're diagnosed with it, I'm pleased that there are now gluten-free options, but these people who are treating gluten as, you know, an equivalent of Al Qaeda are worrying to me.”[3]Footnotes[1] https://www.noted.co.nz/archive/archive-listener-nz-2003/anthony-bourdain-on-everything-wrong-with-the-chicken-nugget[2] Anthony Bourdain Thinks Truffle Oil Is ‘About as Edible as Astroglide’[3] Anthony Bourdain Wishes Death Upon the Pumpkin Spice Craze

Comments from Our Customers

We have been using CocoDoc for some time, to facilitate the proposals and contracts we create for our customers regarding their agreements with us for using our applications and buying/selling textbooks through our company. We have been extremely pleased with how easy it is to utilize this software (assuming the customer *reads* the instructions and document). It has made the process much easier to track. We have saved so much time in creating, sending, editing, and receiving the documents versus previous methods; hard-copy creation/editing/mailing and also emailing documents. It is much easier for us to keep track of where we are in the process as well. We have also been able to free-up actual space in our offices. We, traditionally, kept hard copies of all versions of the proposals and contracts. Now we can do this electronically, and are able to access any version much quicker. This has also helped us to save money on supplies such as paper, toner, filing cabinets, etc., as well as man hours for filing, retrieving, purging, shredding, etc. We make sure to keep multiple electronic, thumb-drive and cloud backups, just to be safe. We are very happy with CocoDoc and have no plans to change.
