I ended up reading the Paris agreement news and found this above picture.For a moment I thought, I have clicked on some irrelevant page and discarded it quickly.I reopened the tab and looked again.I could not believe my eyes that Secretary of State, John Kerry brought his granddaughter along with him to the United Nations General Assembly Hall, as he signed an international commitment to curb the pace of global warming.John Kerry hoisted his granddaugther onto his lap in front of a large assembly gathered from more than 150 countries for the signing ceremony. He kissed her on the cheek after marking his signature on behalf of the United States.By bringing a child, he made every one feel the fact that how necessary this agreement is for the future.I suppose here in India we will think like zillion number of times before doing such things. When it comes to professional and social dynamics, we prefer to follow the trends and avoid doing something which every body else is not doing. They’re not laws, they’re directives on how the Executive Branch of the government, which has far-reaching power, should conduct its business.So things like the infamous “Global Gag Rule,” an executive order directing that US supported international family planning groups abroad can’t use their own money to provide abortion services or information or referrals for abortion, is typically signed in the opening days of a Republican administration and reversed in the opening days of a Democratic one. It’s pretty much a stroke of the pen, ready to go when the new administration is sworn in.Other things may take more time and effort to do properly, or an administrator may find themselves unable to undo something done by executive order by the last administration because of agreements in place tying the rule to things they support. The popularity of an order also makes it difficult, this is why DACA has never been reversed by the Trump Administration.In most cases, a competent transition team will already have executive orders drafted for the President’s signature on items they want to have reversed in the first days of the administration, so many of the orders that Trump put in place that Democrats find odious, like the Muslim ban, will likely have a reversal order ready to go on day one, and reversing an order that’s seen more challenges in court than time enacted is much easier than trying to get the original order through the legal system.
