I've organised some small triathlons; and have lots of friends who've organised marathons, endurance races and other challenging events.Organising a marathon can mean a death sentence for some of the participants.Some can and will die whatever you do. Some friends watched a 16 year old die in mid stride as he had a heart attack from a previously unknown heart defect. Others will die from drinking too much or not enough. Some almost died when too many were crowded into a narrow access tunnel.Then there is the weather. I've run marathons at -20 and 40C. I've been given ice baths, chicken soup, sprayed down with firehoses, packed ice down my shorts to cool the blood as it flows back from my legs; had massages en route and tried to use lip balm for cramp relief.I've had useful medical advice and support and have been checked as safe to run and been in hospital soon after.I've urinated a dozen time before the race, and have savaged portaloos with explosive diarrhea. I've caused a queue with constipation and had to head back for my race chip.My race chip has worked, not worked, fallen off and never been returned.I've got upset with the T-shirt size and colour and lack of goody bag.I've stuffed my face on a finishers buffet and deliriously searched for something, anything to eat and drink.I've shivered in the rain and huddled in a silver blanket. I've had a marathon medal for a half marathon and been too late for a medal at all. I've argued whether being past the cutoff means I should get a finisher t-shirtI've been cheered by spectators, clapped by them and punched one idiot hard in the kidneys as he walked in front of me at 39km.I've thanked the police, the St. John's Ambulqnce, and some of the volunteers. Many I never saw.I've collected my post race kit and car keys every time and found my way to and from the car park. I've had a finishers certificate with my name - and my time and place to show my friends.I've run on open roads, and closed roads and semi closed roads. I got lost once.This is all about me - but the race director has imagined all of these problems and has done something to stop them or help. He's planned for every eventuality.He sends out a flood of runners and gets them trickling back. He balances the dreams and safety of the runners in his hands.Few recognise or acknowledge him. He's the stressed guy on the phone close to the start making sure that some last minute herd of cows won't affect the run.It's hard to get perfect. Smaller races have their own wonderful challenges and as a race director there are so many tradeoffs that need to be made. How do you balance cost, quality and safety? How do you keep the local community happy and on side as you disrupt their daily life?That's enough - need to get to bed now. Hope it's given you a few ideas of some of the stuff that the race director has to think of - even though I haven't gone into too much detail as to how exactly he does it.

I have a Yamaha YZF R-125. I bought it second hand, when i put a deposit the engine was fine. When i went to collect the guy told me he rode it one time and because he hadn’t put oil, the engine was gone. I fitted a Naraku 125 racing kit. Same 125cc volume except my Piston was very different to the O.E.M. My R125 has taken me to 90mph believe it or not. A lot of people are saying their 125/150cc goes 60 to 70mph. Obviously this shows that its not the size of the engine but the components them self. Something as simple as a piston change can drastically change the combustion process giving the desired effect of better performance.Edit: Off course I knocked him down to a great price when he told me the engine had gone. :)

It varies from model to model (both the model of vehicle and the model of exhaust).Since I am more into motorcycles than cars, I’ll speak only of motorcycles. In the 1980s and 1990s, when OEM/stock exhausts were made to just meet the requirements of reliability, cost and environment norms, hence you gained a lot by switching to aftermarket exhausts - as much as 15–20hp in some cases. Over the years, manufacturers have put in so much R&D into exhaust technology in order to squeeze out every bit of performance, that aftermarket exhausts usually gain very little in power, and most of the saving is in weight. A simple slip-on pipe now might only get you 1–2 hp at the most - in a 600–1000cc bike. A full system (includes replacing the header pipes that join the cylinder block, collecter pipers and the end canister/muffler) may add around 8–12 hp more - but you’ll also need to change the air filter and use an aftermarket or race kit fuel/ignition mapping module like a Power Commander to gain those extra 10-odd hp, that’s 10 hp on top of the 200hp that you get out of the factory on a 1000cc bike.If you want to talk cars, there are numerically bigger gains to be had. A full performance exhaust mod on something like a Ford Mustang, you’ll go from around 480hp to 520. For more power, you’ll need additional mods, like cold air intake, new filter, or forced induction even.
