How was your interview at St Stephen?

I applied for BSc (P) Computer Science. I was really prepared for my interview(read: unprepared af). Now as mentioned in the call letter I was tasked to report at 1130 hours. Due to Delhi traffic, I reached at sharp 1139 hours. Many things were going on my mind at that time. What if Principal notices my unpunctual behavior? So when I reached Room-B I saw a nice guy sitting outside of a room. Almost like he was guarding it. Upon investigation I was requested to fill a form and wait. I made a few friends there(A high five to Khushboo, and Yash). The nice guy on the door was just delaying the interview and finally at around 1300 hours our interview started. We were asked to sit on a bench outside the interview room and I was third. Before me was Yash(a friend). After Yash’s interview(He was almost pale after the interview and only thing he muttered was F***), I entered the room. A panel of 6 was waiting for me.I slowly(almost inaudibly) said, “Good Morning, students.” Sweet mother of some random guy! What did I do. But I quickly collected my self and, distinctly and clearly said “Good Afternoon dear Professors and Principal.” They all looked at me for the first time(I think my voice made a impression). Principal(Male, let’s call him P) gave a quick glance and asked me to sit down. I sat on the chair firmly like I owned it. The panel consist of Principal, a mathematics professor(Male let’s call him M) , 2 computer science professors(Both females let’s call them [math]C_1[/math] and [math]C_2[/math]).P : “Tell me something about yourself.”It’s a cliche question but I was really not prepared.Me : “You know my name. I’m Hardik Phalet. But you know all that, so speaking about me, I am from a small town in Rajasthan and I want to change this world” Now all of them were looking at me. I continued, “since I was a small kid there’s only one dream that chose me, a dream to change the world. I believe that using knowledge of Physics and mathematics along with application of Computers I can achieve this dream. And that is why I am here and that is why I chose this course.”I realized that I gave him answer to more than one question. He gave a little smile and asked [math]C_1[/math] and [math]C_2[/math] to continue.[math]C_1[/math] : “Why didn’t you choose computer science in your high school years?”Me : “Our school did not permit us to do that”[math]C_2[/math] gave a suspicious look.[math]C_2[/math] : “Why? Explain.”Then I explained why it is not economically beneficial for our school to hire a CS teacher for 1 student.[math]C_1[/math] : “Do you know about Boolean Algebra?”Me : Radiating confidence(my superpower) confidence I said, “Yes. I read about it in a library.”Then [math]C_1[/math] and [math]C_2[/math] showered me with questions. Then after a few more questions regarding Logic gates(including universal gates), Turing Machine and a pseudo-code, they asked M to continue.M : “Do you know anything about Quadratic Equations?”Me : Confidence shower continues. “Yes sir I think I know.”M : “Good! Tell me why we can’t have one real and one complex root.”He handed me a notepad. I then explained the theory properly and in brief.M : He then continued by writing a equation and asked me to determine the nature of it’s root. I solved in promptly. Then he said, “Draw a graph of [math]\sin(|x|)[/math].” I drew a neat graph.M : “That’s all for today. You may go.”Me : “Can I know one thing.” All of them nodded. “How did it go?”M : “You’ll get to know tomorrow.”I walked out of the room after thanking them.I then enjoyed the beauty of St. Stephens and left.Result : Selected.

My college isn't the cool colleges type. How do I deal with the depression when I hear about other colleges and see my friends enjoying their life in their respective colleges?

Remember that we have two kinds of people on this earth, the ones who are called optimists and the other category who are called pessimists. An optimist sees an opportunity in every situation and even sometimes turns an adversity into an opportunity.the way you see life my dear friend,You're going to an okay college, it's not an IIT or St Stephens. but then there must be nice people around too, look, mix with people, make a couple of friends, study because these years won't come back. At the end of the day,it's not how cool your college is, but how cool you are. In the longer run, it doesen't matter whether you drove to your hip college ina Merc or you simply walked your way, neither does it matter that you hung out in cool clubs with your friends and partied, memories stay and a couple of good friends stay in the end and your success wouldn't be measured by the tag of a cool college,it is you who can make your life awesome. Think over what I sad and enjoy your college life.Good luck!

How did you decide your child’s name?

Well. Let me get started here…got a minute?!? ;)Firstborn son, Paul Michael. When I was 12 I was talking to my sister and a friend. We were like many young girls, dreaming about getting married one day (which we all eventually did btw) and having families. I remember saying that my favorite boy name being Michael, I was going to marry a man with that name. Our firstborn son, if we were so blessed, would be “Paul Michael”…Paul being my 2nd favorite boy name. As it turns out, against all odds I did end up marrying a wonderful man named ~ you guessed it: Michael. And, 1.5 years later, I gave birth to our firstborn child, a son, whom we named “Paul Michael.” What are the odds, eh?! lol I love both names because in Catholic tradition, they are both the names of very strong Saints ~ St Paul, ne Saul, a missionary, writer, teacher, martyr. Some even count him as the 13th Apostle. And Michael, after the great Archangel ~ no explanation needed there!Second born, a daughter. We were both cradle Catholics and as you probably know, Catholics are known for their devotion to Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. So, without even questioning it, we named our daughter Mary Frances ~ after 2 favorite Saints ~ Our Lady and St Frances Cabrini, who founded the order of nuns The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who were a great help to immigrant Italians in the early days of the United States of America ~ which my husband, who was 100% Italian, greatly appreciated.Third (and 4th) our twin girls, Theresa Rose and Laura Gabrielle. Theresa, being another obvious Catholic name lol, but there are several saintly women who bear this name whom I greatly admire; Rose because, again, a wonderful Saint in the Church who was very much devoted to the Blessed Sacrament, and who frequently had visions of her Guardian Angel. Laura, because for a time, early on, we debated about the name of Laurence ~ after a martyred Saint who was well known for his great compassion, his learning…AND his sense of humor, believe it or not. The name Gabrielle is, of course, the female version of the name of the great Archangel, St Gabriel, God’s favored messenger in both the Old and the New Testaments. This brings me to our 5th child, a daughter, Andrea Jean. The name Andrew is a family name from my husband’s side, and his father Andrew was a very strong ~ and I mean STRONG ~ figure in his life. A many-times decorated US Marine from WW2 (several Purple Hearts, also Bronze Star AND Silver Star), who actually died twice and came back…trust me, this man was a real character! He was even at the Battle of Iwo Jima, where the Marines raised the American Flag in the famous photograph. So, “Andrea” it was…and Jean just because we liked it. :) Funny thing is, this is our one daughter who has more of her grandfather’s “hootzbah” than anyone else I know. So…indeed…”What’s in a name?” right?!? (thank-you, William Shakespeare) …As for the Catholic angle, St Andrew was the brother of St Peter, also one of the Twelve Apostles and a martyr…again, a very strong personality ~ crucified on an X-shaped cross. Her other patron Saint, St Jeanne Jugan, was the founder of the Little Sisters of the Poor, who have become known world-wide for their service to the poorest of the poor. And then, along came baby number 6, daughter number 5, Clare Ellen. Back to the Saints…St Clare of Assisi is a longtime favorite of mine, her strong will in the face of danger against a Muslim attack, defeating them simply by holding up the Monstrance in the face of attack against her convent, daring them to come any closer. She was also a dear friend of St Francis of Assisi ~ I believe we ALL know who he was…whether Catholic or not. Ellen is a family name from my side; it is a favorite middle name going back generations, also the shortened version of Helena, if, going back to the Saint, the woman who is credited with finding the True Cross. And then, of all our girls, daughter number 6, Julia Anne. The name of Julia, was ironically a favorite of both my husband AND my Dad. For the most part, they didn’t always agree on many things…but this was a win-win for both of them. It was a name my Dad had always wanted for one of his 4 daughters, but my Mom over-ruled him every time lol…so when my husband said he wanted this name for OUR girl, there was no argument from anyone! As for anything to do with her Catholic heritage, St Julia, even tho she was a woman, because she refused to renounce Jesus Christ and surrender her virginity, she was crucified like a common criminal. The name of Anne, of course, being the name of the Grandmother of Jesus Christ and mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is taken from one of the most illustrious Saints in the Church. Finally, this brings me to our last child, our 2nd son, Stephen Thomas. On the way to the hospital, I told my husband that, after debating for months about yet another girl’s name, I decided that we were “tapped out” and he agreed. “What do you say we have a boy this time, eh?” he responded, to which I laughed and said “lots of luck” ~ knowing our history…but, just in case, what did he think about the name Stephen Timothy? Well, he said that Stephen was a good name but Timothy was not what he had in mind to go with it ~ what about Thomas? So there we were. And lo and behold, a 2nd son was born a few short hours later ~ by C-sect no less…I liked the name Stephen after St Stephen the First Martyr, also St Stephen, King of Hungary…and Thomas for the many MANY Saints with that name.I guess, all in all, you could say that being a Catholic played a MAJOR role in our decisions over the years (was it obvious?!), but we never regretted a single choice we made. All of our names are classic, easy to pronounce and spell, no reason to make fun of any of them, to balk at any weird spellings, to be embarrassed going to a job interview. And I stand by each and every one of them. #love
