LA County is 10,163,507. It is bigger than New York City at 8,622,698.This is sort of a mistake to think that LA is only the population boundaries the city of LA. It just has a different governing political structure ever since New York incorporated other cities as boroughs in 1898. There are separate cities inside of the City LA like Santa Monica. Other places are clearly part of the same urban area but are like Burbank, Glendale, Long Beach Pasadena, Redondo Beach, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Malibu, and East LA and many more. All these are all in LA County but not in the City. There are 141 cities or unincorporated areas in LA County. The political structure is different than New York. However the people are still there in one continuous urban area. It is just that New York incorporated other cities as boroughs in 1898 and LA did not do that as much.LA county is to the City of LA as the boroughs are to Manhattan. It functions as one city and is bigger than NYC. It is the most populous county in the United States. It is the third-largest metropolitan economy in the world, with a Nominal GDP of over $700 billion.However, perhaps what makes the most sense is to compare Metropolitan areas. The New York metropolitan area is 20.3 million residents in 2017, or the Combined Statistical Area which is 23.7 million . That is bigger than the similar combined area of LA.The LA Metropolitan area is 13,353,907. The Greater LA Area has a 2015 estimated population of about 18.7 million. It is the more-or-less continuously urbanized area stretching from Ventura County to the southern border of Orange County and from the Pacific Ocean to the Coachella Valley.It is similar with Mexico City (also in North America). The city proper is 8.84 million people. The population of Greater Mexico City is 21.3 million in the urban area of the Valley of Mexico. That is Mexico City itself composed of 16 Municipalities in the City and 41 adjacent municipalities. It is a contiguous urban area. There are thin highland areas which separate it from other adjacent metropolitan areas. Together it makes up the Mexico City megalopolis. The megalopolis has of 173 municipalities. These are 91 of the state of Mexico, 29 of the state of Puebla, 37 of the state of Tlaxcala, 16 of Morelos and 16 of Hidalgo, and the 16 boroughs of the Federal District. It has an approximate total population of almost 27 million people. Bigger than the New York Combined Statistical Area. Bigger than Greater LA.As to whether Greater LA will overtake greater Mexico City or greater New York, I think it depends on water. The LA combined statistical area covers 33,954 square miles (87,940 km2). The density is low. There are 550.1 people/sq mi (212.4/km2). A great deal of it is low rise. If they don’t run out of water for people to drink, then Greater LA has tons of room to grow.It is harder for New York to grow because it is already so dense and the geography is confined in some ways by water. The greater the New York Megacity is 13,318 sq mi (34,490 km2). The density is 1,781.3 people/sq mi (687.8/km2) is much higher than LA. The Greater LA area is less than a third as dense.Greater Mexico City spreads over the valley of Mexico is a 9,560 km² (3,691 sq mi) valley. It is much smaller in area and has more density. The infrastructure is not doing well. It will be hard for it to continue to grow.Greater LA easily could, and may, double in population. Greater New York and Greater Mexico City will have a harder time doing that.
