Watching/listening to Patriots fans, you will hear the common refrain that the Patriots are being targeted because of their past record of success (some truth to that) and deflate-gate really shouldn't matter because the lopsidedness of the victory over the Colts could never be purely explained by something as petty as slightly deflated footballs. I (as much as anyone) understand what it means to truly love a team and want to defend that team to the end, but the logic in both those defenses completely misses the point and the significance of what is going on.First, regardless of how petty the incident might be, if the Patriots organization is proven to knowingly violated the rules, then the Patriots need to be punished with the harshest possible terms. Why? Well, a precedence must be set for the prosecution of cheating. Any cheating. Period. If the Patriots are guilty AND the NFL fails to punish, then this sends an implicit (one could argue explicit) message "Hey NFL teams, if you bend the rules or out right cheat in a playoffs game and you win, there really isn't anything we (the NFL ) can do about it. " I am sure that most NFL teams are already looking to every possible advantage they can find to win. With only a mild punishment for a guilty team, this will likely send teams into over drive and possibly trigger a larger incident in the future (not necessarily involving the Patriots) where a team does something that truly affects the outcome of a game. By not having a zero tolerance policy to cheating, the NFL welcomes future escalations. (BTW, before any Pats fans start challenging me to come up with possibly future scenarios, stop. Fact is, hardly anyone I know of ever thought of deflating balls prior to the 2015 AFC Championship game. So, I imagine there are plenty of things teams could do that we the fans couldn't even possibly fathom.)Imagine a scenario where a team cheats and it DOES have a material affect on a Division Championship Game or playoff game. Imagine one of the two teams in the Super Bowl being viewed as verified illegitimate. The consequences to the NFL brand would be catastrophic. One could easily imagine all kinds of doomsday scenarios such as advertisers pulling back, mass media coverage of the Super Bowl "that shouldn't be," or worse yet, the first disqualification of a team. These kinds of scenarios are the sum of all fears for the NFL. Further, no brand in America wants to be identified with cheaters or anything that looks like it is not on the "up and up." The only thing that makes the NFL the NFL is the integrity and the perception of fairness in the game. If viewers come to perceive the NFL as possibly fixed, it would just be the World Wrestling Federation.Second, as an adjunct to the first point, what if the Colts played a much better game, the contest was close and came down to a last second missed field goal that was missed only because the football was slightly deflated? What a catastrophe! What then? You would basically have an illegitimate Super Bowl team. People are only dismissing "deflate gate" because the Patriots routed the Colts, but if the game were played 100 times, I am sure you might have a diverse set of possible outcomes that include a few close games either way. In this situation, it just happened that the Patriots blew out the Colts, but that doesn't change the severity of the charge.Finally, much of the NFL's audience engagement is rooted in either straight up gambling or fantasy sports. People put real money on these games in the belief that they are conducted fairly. Because they put money on the games, they watch the games. If bettors believe the NFL is in some way fixed or there are non-transparent practices happening that give teams decided benefits over others, then less people will bet on the NFL and less people will watch it. If less people watch the NFL, ratings decrease. If ratings decrease, then ad revenue decreases. NFL ad revenue is 70%+ of total revenue. So, you do the math. Keeping the appearance that the game is fair is crucial to the NFL's very existence.Anyone who believes protecting the integrity of a game isn't all that important need only to look to the sport of horse racing. Horse racing was once the pre-eminent sport in the US. As allegations of drugs and cheating leaked into the game, gambling dollars moved elsewhere. Now, horse racing, as a sport, is somewhere in the public mind distantly behind golf or tennis.So, yes, what the Patriots did was petty, stupid and probably didnt affect the outcome of the game in this particular instance, but the magnitude of the transgression is not the point and nor should it guide the penalty. Removing the Patriots and the specific actions from the discussion, its about ensuring and protecting the public perception that the game is fair and can not be rigged. It doesnt matter how big or small the action was.
