Mermaids are not nice. None of the traditional myths about mermaids make them nice like Disney’s stories have them.The mermaids in Homer’s story were called sirens and they sang in beautiful voices to lure lonely sailors to shipwrecked doom on the rocks. The hero of the Odyssey had his sailors plug their ears and then tie him to the mast so he could here the sirens singing as they sailed past the sirens on their rocky shore.In the Rhine river is a rock and it has the legend of the Lorelei with it. Lorelei was a water maiden who distracts the sailors with her beauty and her song, again luring them to their death.In New Zealand there is Pania of the Reef.The legends are widespread and they have one common feature. The sound of beautiful voices singing. I think there is an underlying phenomena the legends try to explain. I think human brains try to make sense of random white noise that comes from the waves on the shore, and the result is what is mostly white sound gets perceived as voices. Poets have often reported hearing voices in the sounds generated by streams going over rocks too (babbling brooks) and native North Americans have legends of voices in the winter woods luring people out of camp to their doom. The wind in the trees can generate the same types of white sound waves and running water do.If I heard the mermaids singing I would think it was a trick my mind was playing on me, but I would probably still want to go see what they look like.

In German folklore, there’s the legend of the Lorelei. There are many versions of the story, but in one telling, the Lorelei was a beautiful young woman whose family wanted her to marry the local lord’s son. But she loved another, and so rather than consent to the arrangement, she jumped off the nearby cliffs overlooking the Rhine river.
