My wife and I went on a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas in March 2020.I’ve been on many cruises before and I’m sure I will go on many more in the future, but this is one I will never forget.We embarked on Sunday, March 8.While on board, between March 11 and March 14, one of the craziest series of events I have ever witnessed unfolded.It started with sports.We only had access to a few TV channels in our stateroom. One of them was ESPN, so we got most of our news about current events from SportsCenter.First, an NBA player tested positive for COVID-19.This set off a chain reaction that ended with the entire league shutting down indefinitely within 24 hours.Thursday, March 12 was the start of the Players Championship, one of the biggest golf tournaments in the world.After the first round concluded, the PGA announced that the tournament was cancelled and all the players were being sent home.By the end of the week, every major sporting event, from European soccer leagues to the NCAA basketball tournament, had been called off due to coronavirus concerns.By the end of the weekend, school closures had been announced.All major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, halted their operations and cancelled future cruises.It was surreal.While the “outside world” was turning upside down, we were on the second largest cruise ship in the world enjoying great food, bottomless drinks, and live entertainment.We were having a blast. Or at least, trying to.At this point, we were quite anxious about our health and our itinerary.We had already heard of at least one cruise ship that had been quarantined due to a COVID-19 outbreak and we wondered if we would return to port as planned on Sunday.During this time, the Royal Caribbean staff went above and beyond to reassure us that our health and safety was their number one priority.They took extra measures to ensure cleanliness such as the extra cleaning of seats, handrails, and restrooms, changing buffet items from self-serve to served by staff, and constant reminders about hand washing.This eased some of our concerns.We ended up having no issues on board or getting back to port as scheduled.I greatly appreciate the extra health and safety measures taken by Royal Caribbean during this difficult time.I hope they continue with these on future cruises even after the pandemic has passed.

As Angi said, you will see a variety of outfits. I have been on two Princess cruises, one a 7 night in the Western Caribbean, the other a 16 night up the Pacific coast from Santiago, Chile to Los Angeles, California. On both cruises on formal night I saw everything from tuxedoes to slacks with a button shirt. Most were probably in the sport jacket and tie range. Of course, the ladies were in equivalent attire.On the 16 night cruise we had three formal nights. I wore the following: 1) suit and tie with a nice vest, 2) sport jacket and tie, 3) sport jacket without a tie.
