I get such requests frequently. I keep a file of old letters, and that makes it easy for me. I typically look at the letter, describe what is in it to the student, and ask if any update is appropriate.Sometimes students apologize when making this request, but I never think it is necessary. Nice of them to be concerned, but the effort from me is minimal.
