People loving one another, sharing life’s joys and burdens and raising kids is pretty awesome.I’m a really big fan of good governance and sensible fiscal policies in government.I’m really big on conserving nature instead of exploiting it to destruction.Sadly, that’s not actually a list of North American conservative parties’ values anymore.Conservative parties, especially Republicans, have become knee jerk fiscal Libertarians, slashing regulation and not actually using market mechanisms for positive outcomes at all. They’ve lost touch with reality on major issues like climate change, and as a result are against all mechanisms to deal with them. They just ended up harming everyone.The socially conservative idea of the nuclear family is pretty toxic. It’s homophobic, classist, racist and incredibly hypocritical. And it’s the norm among Republicans. Even in Canada, the federal Conservative Party’s platform was more money for mothers, not parents, and the leader couldn’t put on a happy face and show up at Pride Parades. He was also against abortion personally.The USA has just seen four years of degradation of good governance under Trump and the Republicans. It’s been shocking and horrifying to see Republicans throw away all the checks and balances to avoid being tweeted about. And the past four decades are a litany of conservative tax cuts for the rich with accompanying massive deficits, and more liberal governments cleaning up the fiscal mess.Conservative parties have become the party of narrow conservationists, where rich people set aside some land that hunters can hunt on, and preserve species that hunters like to shoot. But they have become the parties of climate change denial and climate action delay, the parties of ozone hole denial, the parties of walking away from international accords. The Canadian conservatives campaigned heavily against the price on carbon, a conservative economic market mechanism, and in favor of selling lots more oil and gas domestically and internationally. In Ontario, one of the first things the new Conservative Premier did upon taking office was cutting up 758 renewables contracts and legislatively shutting down any legal recourse for it. He killed the carbon cap and trade. Now he’s opening up wetlands for destructive development.Modern North American Conservative parties aren’t conservative. They aren’t fiscally conservative, they don’t pay attention to empirical reality unless it suits them, they are actively destructive to the environment that we all depend on and they want to regress society.I’m fine with actual small c-conservatives. I have no problem talking with them and finding common ground to pragmatically address reality. But modern Conservative and Republican politicians? There are very few of them that fit that bill.
