Some 25 years ago I rode a late evening train out of Reading up to Birmingham. There were few on the train and in my carriage there was I, a youngish (35?) business woman sat facing me three tables up, and right at the far end, an elderly couple. It was quiet and the woman nodded off. Slowly she slipped down and nearing Banbury her voluminous skirt was no longer concealing what it's meant to conceal. And she was “commando”. What does one do? Abandon one's crossword and feast the eyes? No: I went into the carriage behind me and explained the situation to a genuinely middle aged lady and asked her to walk through and gently wake the tired temptress so she could “readjust” her clothing unaware that her revelations had been noted. I carried on up the train to the buffet and returned with a tea and a sandwich.I felt desperately gallant and thoroughly decent for days. A rare feeling so very enjoyable.EDIT 31.12.20:-Thank you for all the praise but I doubt it is deserved. Although my response to her was superficially gallant I suspect I was actually being selfishly chauvinist. It's not the first time I've ‘protected the modesty’ of a damsel from other male eyes. If I see someone quietly sat breastfeeding my instinct is to sit nearby and glare at passing males. In a pub when, during a silly Xmas quiz, ‘first lady's bra’ won a prize the lady stood next to me started manipulating her's off under her blouse. As I'd just read the bra’s Triumph label through the blouse I had my sweater off and over her before she'd revealed anything.It's as though I'm preventing others from seeing and that's almost an expression of ownership. Not gallant at all.

He submits it for publication to both the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. Now, it takes the LAT editor about 4 weeks to get back to him and the NYT editor about 4 months. If it gets rejected from the LAT, there's little to worry about. However, if it gets accepted by the LAT, then Kevin has a problem. When submitting puzzles to the NYT (and every major crossword publication), he can't submit material that has been or will be published elsewhere. It is rude to the editor to waste his time with a puzzle he can no longer publish, especially since it will be difficult to let him know that he cannot publish it. Major faux pas.In addition, once the LAT has accepted it, they (or any other paper) have the ownership rights to it, so it is no longer yours to submit.Play it safe - submit your puzzles to one venue at a time!

Thank you for the A2A.The Times: a sad demise from “The Thunderer” to Murdoch’s poodle.Factually, the Times still rates pretty high; but it is very selective in the stories it publishes and it mirrors Murdoch’s republican (with a small r) views. It is also not above printing stories based on stories promulgated by the Sun., also in Murdoch’s kennel.Very good crossword, though. The best, in my opinion, in the entire UK press (and therefore in the world!)
