PDF Editor FAQ

What is a typical day in the life of a professor like?

I think there are a number of related questions out there on Quora you might reference. I'm surprised that I've never seen this particular (direct) version of the question before. This is not an easy question, simply because there are so many parts to the answer. Whatever I write will be incomplete. To be clear, I am answering from the perspective of a faculty at a relatively high ranked large public research university. Faculty Life at other institutions will likely vary, perhaps significantly.1. It's extremely freeing and exciting to work on research on a daily basis, and have control over what it is that you want to work on. I know a lot of people think that academic freedom is overblown, and that we're all puppets of funding agencies. I would respectfully disagree. If you do interesting work and learn how to frame questions to make them interesting to funding agencies, then you have quite a bit of latitude in choosing your own research areas and problems. That is liberating, especially for someone like me who likes to follow broad themes rather than stay in specific research sectors. As sort of jack of all trades, I've written papers at the top venues in quite a range of areas, including data mining, network measurements, security, systems, networking, distributed/parallel algorithms, wireless/mobile networks, databases, and human-computer interaction. I'm pretty sure that I would have no such freedom in any other job.2. It's amazing to work with some of the most intelligent people on the planet. Academia is a selective community, and people who make it tend not only to be smart, driven, creative, but also generally good people. As a faculty member, you get to collaborate with who you want, and surround yourself with people (students and collaborators) who you genuinely like. Oh and you don't have a real boss (yes we all meet every 2-3 years to evaluate each other, but in a supportive department, it's not a painful process).3. It's exciting and thrilling to select and recruit some of the best students from top schools around the globe to work with you. It's rewarding to watch them grow as researchers and as human beings. It's like having new adult children every 4-5 years, and it's sad and proud to watch them depart for great positions and careers when they leave.4. It's incredibly challenging to multitask around 10-20 regular tasks on a daily basis. On any given day, I'm reviewing papers as PC for multiple conferences, writing letters of recommendation for (undergrad applications, PhD applications, faculty job applications, promotion to tenure), studying material and preparing/giving lectures, advising undergrad and grad students on academic issues, organizing and running meetings for the department (grad admissions, fellowships, graduate affairs, department curriculum, faculty hiring) and for the campus (hiring and promotion, resource allocation, educational abroad programs), preparing/writing research grants, reviewing research grants for NSF panels, doing research (experiments, brainstorming, managing student tasks, writing papers, preparing presentations/talks), outreach to industry (visiting companies, giving talks, hosting visitors), outreach to students (e.g. managing summer internships for high school students).5. Traveling around the world for work is kinda cool.6. Having lots of time flexibility is great for family. I can go to the dentist when I need to, and attend meetings for my kids without worrying about missing an hour of work.7. I work a lot, in evenings, on weekends, on planes, in cars, waiting in doctor's offices and during times when I should be doing other things.I'm sure there's more, and I'll try to add to this as I remember them.

What is life at IIM Rohtak like?

IIM Rohtak campus is also known as the Management city. It is one of the new IIMs that was established in the country during the 11th Five Year Plan. IIM Rohtak started from transit college Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and is now a 200 acres green campus.IIM Rohtak stood 5th in Research and Professional Practices in Management Category among all IIMs and ranked overall 27th in the Management category in NIRF India Rankings 2018.AcademicsThe academic rigor at IIM Rohtak is quite high. The novel case-based pedagogy followed make the classes very interesting. Classes are mostly about discussing with your peers about the given case. Because of the academic, cultural and gender diversity of the students, you get to analyze the case from various angles. Lecturers mainly act as facilitators of the discussion.Additionally, class participation carries weight in your grades. This makes the entire class extremely competitive, and students are always eager to put across their points of view. Also, you have never ending presentations. I think on an average everyone at IIM Rohtak at least makes or presents 2 presentations per week. The word 'Kathor' (the reverse of Rohtak) meaning "tough", has come to exemplify the experience of being at the institute and its character building outcome.Daily RoutineYou will have classes from 8:45 in the morning till 05:30 in the evening. However, usually there are no continuous classes and on an average, a student has to take almost 4:30-5 hours of classes each day. There are no holidays. Even on weekends, you can usually have a guest lecture by some industry experts to give insights on what’s going on in the actual corporate world. After classes there will be almost brainstorming ideas in clubs meetings.. You can enjoy the gossips and the laughter in the meetings. Some enjoy a session of badminton / basketball / volleyball / cricket, etc. Having charged up batteries, most of the students go to their respective rooms. A pile of assignments, presentations, quizzes await which one have to complete within the deadline. Most of the rooms in the hostel are filled with a group of students discussing, deliberating, debating on a particular topic. An immensely competitive peer group ensures that everyone brings something new on the table. This is how you grow at IIM Rohtak. Night canteen and S.T.O.R.E. proves to your savior during cravings for Maggi and Coffee. After 2 am many student finally seek the heavenly abode of sleep.Clubs and CommitteesIIM Rohtak has something to offer to everyone. Numerous events and competitions conducted by eleven different clubs ensure that each one of student is provided with the opportunity to pursue their individual interests ranging from photography, debating to social work, aside from academic pursuits.IIM Rohtak has a total number of 13 committees and 10 clubs. All the student-driven clubs and committees support the administration in carrying out non-academic activities related to the institute. There are Public Relations Cell, which is responsible for promotion and brand building, Placement Committee for carrying out placement activities, Alumni Committee is responsible for organising alumni engagement activities and Entrepreneurship Cell is responsible for promoting entrepreneurship and organising related activities. There are other committees like the Academic Committee for academic matters, Cultural Committee for cultural activities, Elections & Auditing Committee for auditing and conducting elections, Hospitality Committee for managing student mess, Industrial Relations & Interaction Cell for corporate engagement, IT Committee for IT related matters, Sports Committee for sports activities, Student Council for coordination between clubs and Training Cell for skill development and others. In addition to that, the institution also has different clubs like FI Club -Finance & Investment, Humane-R Club – human resources, ITernity Club -information technology, Marque Club – marketing, Supply Chain & Operations Management Club, Strategy & Consulting Club, explore Club – film and photography, Social Development Projects Cell and Voice Club – public speaking.Hostel lifeThe campus offers fully residential 2-year full-time program. There are 12 beautiful hostels already constructed to house 2 batches of 250 students each. The hostels have 3 floors with 3/4 flats in each floor. Each flat has 3/4 separate spacious furnished rooms with a common hall and a balcony. Each room has a separate washroom for privacy. The hostels are very close to each other and closer to the mess and academic block.Although, the coolest hangouts happen at the hostel rooms; people usually hang out in front of the night canteen or STORE. Moreover, the Rohtak city has many cafes and lounges which offer a great ambience to hang out.Sports FacilityIIM Rohtak new campus provides modern sports facilities like cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, lawn tennis, badminton, athletics, swimming, squash, gymnasium, table tennis, carrom and chess. The Sports Committee is responsible for selection and constitution of various teams for different sports like cricket, football, basketball, badminton, swimming etc. These teams are sent for participating in various inter-B School sports events, representing IIM Rohtak.
