First off, let’s answer a more interesting question than talking about the biggest piece of crap we’ve worked on. Let’s talk about the worst naughty programs we’ve written.In college I wrote games on our VAX and made them public, so I was a god. I also wrote some utilities, notably a WHO app that wrapped the system utility and mapped people’s names (instead of student numbers) to computer rooms on campus. My games got very popular, so the administration told me to stop making them public. I countered with “closed from 9 to 5” which was accepted. So from 9 to 5 if you ran one of my games, it would print out an error message saying games were closed until 5. Then it would wait 20 seconds for you to type in the invisible secret password, barfpoodles. If you didn’t, it silently exited. If you did, you could play. It was a poorly kept secret, but apparently secret enough that we didn’t get hassled about it.However, the worst thing I made software do was lie. I started dating this young lady who had multiple guys chasing her. She was in a business computer class, and began hanging out in the computer lab with the rest of us doing our homework and programs. Guys would come looking for her, but I’d gotten her out of the main computer room, and into the small secluded room with the cool color graphics terminals. Having them interrupt was annoying. So I’d have my minions id their account names (student numbers) and I made a list. Since everyone used my WHO utility, she simply wouldn’t show up for them anymore. I told her I was doing it too, because I wanted her to myself. It worked quite well, and I almost felt bad about doing it.You can’t trust software.

Thanks for A2A ,I was totally astonished to hear that the mtech fees has been increased by 10 times . Now it will cost you around 5–6 lakhs for mtech in IIT's.Some questions are wandering in my mind related to this -The committee declared it on 28th September 2019. Do you know why only on this day?They could have declared it before the admissions of 2019 mtech also, but they didn't do that. Why so?Why 10 times fees hike , where the questions is it could have been 2 or 3 or 5 times ?Why no stipend to mtech students from 2020 ?Answers to the above question-They declared it on 28th september 2019 because after hearing this kind of things , the rest 10–20% students , who might be thinking to apply for GATE just for the sake of writing Gate exam won't apply further . This money will be around 60 lakhs atleast. If you take around 4000–6000 students applying on the last date, or day before the last date, the (4000*1500) = 60 lakhs. They don't want to loose this big sum of money for their decision .They could have declared it before 2019 mtech admissions , but they didn't do that because thing is that , this year the recruitment of PSU's through Gate 2019 has been worse of all, and seems to hold the same trend in future years, as a result of which the Mtech cutoff for the IIT's increased this year tremendously. The same thing is expected in 2020 also, as more number of PSU’s are in the process of privatization. IIT's were waiting to take an advantage of this situation.Increasing the fees is not at all a problem for students, instead the problem is increasing it upto 10 times. The reason for this question you will get if you see the fee structure of Btech students, which is around 2lpa. IIT's are thinking that moreover placements in Btech and Mtech is almost equal. In IIT Bombay average package in Mtech is around 11–12 lpa , whereas in Btech it is around 13–15 lpa, which shows that it is almost equal. Then why Mtech students will be getting an advantage of fees over Btech students.Now there will be no stipend anymore. The reason is same as in 3rd answer. And IIT's also think that students who are pursuing in Mtech dont have any interest in doing Mtech. They are always in search of any other Govt. Jobs or PSU's. They leave Mtech when they are placed in any Govt. Or Psu. Otherwise with no jobs in hand , they could use the placement in IIT's to get a good job. IIT's say that the students in Mtech are benefited either way.Now I will tell you , if these were the problems for IIT's , so why they waited for so many years for snatching the stipend and increasing the fees.Reason for such kind of fee structure -From 1980’s , there were very few institutions in India who were providing scope for higher research. Students who were in Btech in any college (there were only Govt. colleges those days), in 1980’s were getting good jobs. No one was interested in pursuing higher research degree , as they think there was no need of it in those days.In order to solve this problem, Indian govt. decided to give Mtech degrees in minimal fees , along with an attractive stipend. Govt. thought students will be attracted to this scheme, and it literally happenedBut when days past more and more number of colleges increased. Getting employed also became a problem, in this situation students are more attracted towards Mtech, rather than going for an average job also.Consequences for fees hike -IIT mtech cutoff will decrease by around 25–30%.Number of students appearing in Gate 2020 will not decrease , as the dates for application is already over.Major impact in number of students will be seen in Gate 2021 . There will be decrease of around 20–25% in total number of students.Not every student preparing for Gate, thinks of only psu. Some students also think about doing Mtech in IIT's , but those students will now look for other possible options for them.I see a decrease in competition of Gate exam in 2021, as the number of candidates getting placed in PSU's is dwindling, and from now IIT fee hike will also add some numbers to it.GRE, CAT exams will be an option for some students.Major number of people will now think of pursuing MBA rather than going for for Mtech in IIT's. It will cost them around 2–2.5 times that of new fees in IITs, with same placement but less competition.Quality of students in Mtech in IITs will decrease in future. Around 2023–2024 , you could see the impact of this decision .Soon you will see fees hike in NITs and Other SFTIs , Govt colleges.Students having Top 100 rank in Gate wont be holding any Mtech seats anymoreLeaving the top 7–9 IITs , no one will join IITs like palakad, jammu, bhubaneswar , mandiI am strictly against this decision, as it makes no sense for increasing it upto 10 times and snatching the stipend .IITs will regret…
