PDF Editor FAQ

Could a Challenger-like disaster have happened even during a warmer time of the year like spring, summer or autumn from 1981 to 1985?

The possibility of O-ring erosion was not only possible during warmer seasons in the early years of the Space Transportation System…they occurred. On several flights. The original Solid Rocket Booster joint design was inherently problematic from the start. Tests by the manufacturer showed that, with enough pressure in the wrong direction on the booster, the joints would deform enough for pressurized gases to push through the joints. Now, the O-rings were designed to compensate for any flexing. But in reality, the joint’s flex was far too much. NASA engineers involved with the project tried to relay these serious concerns early in the SRB development, but senior management opted not to review or revise matters with the manufacturer.Evidence of O-ring erosion (where gases have eaten away at one or both rings) was evident as early as the second Shuttle flight, STS-2, in November 1981. By 1985, most of the launches that year showed either erosion or hot gases blowing by the O-ring seals.Based on the data compiled after the STS-51-L incident by the Rogers Commission report, those earlier missions were not lost primarily due to launch day temperatures. However, on Space Shuttle Main Engine ignition, the rocket stack flexes, by design, along those SRB joints at the base of the rocket. This was the point where any erosion or blow-by happened for any mission that showed the problem. In the case of STS-51-L, the colder temperatures didn’t allow the O-rings to reseal the joint as fast as on previous missions. A blow-by of hot gases at the joint of one SRB was far larger than other launches. That joint tried to reseal for a time. What sealed the fate of STS-51-L was joint rotation caused by higher upper level wind shear, flexing the affected joint and reopening it enough for the O-rings to be fully useless against any pressurized gases.

What is Bristol like?

This is my 10th year living in Bristol, moved over for uni and have never left. Here's how I would sum it up:- small enough to bump into people you know regularly, big enough to still be a city- you can escape to the countryside in minutes, green hills can be seen in every direction.- has a lot of green innercity too! Most people know and love the downs, blaise, Ashton court. However East we have Purdown, Stoke park, snuff mills, etc too. You can literally walk for miles in innercity countryside without crossing a road- people are friendly. In London, you avoid eye contact, in Bristol, I've always found people are dead friendly if you smile, they will smile back- in the summer, it's like being in a foreign country, we don't holiday in the summer and wait until autumn for this reason- lots going on. Free festivals, parties, events. Go mountain biking in Stoke park, watch the balloons during the fiesta, fly a kite on the downs, cycle to bath on the cycle path. We have the lido, the harbour, and so many good places to eat and drink!!- as someone else has said, Bristol is in a great location for getting to London. We're 11mins on the train from bath too.- even the bad parts of Bristol aren't that bad!Negatives:- public transport is abysmal! But at least we all know it.. I haven't been to a city with it so bad. They're currently working on a metro bus network that no one has high hopes for but longer term plans could result in a new train loop... Don't hold your breath though!!- congestion is another issue, made worse at the moment from the roadworks but it's never been good with or without roadworks- house prices. They are ridiculous as are rents, but we don't get London wages to help with these.Personally, I couldn't imagine living somewhere else. Since living here, I've never visited somewhere else and thought 'id love to live here' Bristol is home :)

What is your review of Iowa State University?

I graduated from Iowa State in May 2016. I studied at Iowa State for 2 years. I came in as an exchange student from India and loved the environment so much that I decided to transfer. Before continuing with my reasons to transfer, I would like to say that everything at Iowa State does seem to be about money like Kyle Roode said. The university seems to be very focused on making money in any way they can. Another thing about Iowa State that was hard for me to adjust to was the weather which is very cold.Moving to the good things:The labs (I am a computer engineer and hence, talking about computer labs): I loved the labs. Most of the labs were related to the course material and planned very thoughtfully to enhance the learning. The infrastructure of the physical labs definitely needed upgrade as the hardware was old and broke down frequently. However, recently, I have heard that they have made some major changes in that area.Professors and classes: This is a tricky one. Depending on the professor, either your life can be heaven or hell. Ratemyprofessor reviews are mostly true and certainly very helpful in deciding which class to take with which professor. Most professors though are ready to spend extra hours outside class to help you with study material. However, there are some bitter nuts. Computer engineer and computer science classes are heavily application based (lab based). They have interesting material and require hours of work outside classes and labs.Exams: Most professional classes are project based instead of exam based which means that projects influence the grade more than exams. However, most classes do have about 2 exams. Classes in the first two years of engineer (basic science and math classes) do have more exams and are not project based.Tutoring: I think that Iowa State has a huge tutoring culture. International students and women in science and engineering can get one subject free each semester. Tutoring services are always employing good students to help all the students perform better in their studies.Clubs and activities: During the period of good weather, there are a lot of out door activities taking place everyday. Students relax in the campanile on their hammocks and play frisbee with their friends. It is a delightful sight. The autumn is the most beautiful season at Iowa State. There are many clubs at Iowa State as well. Each semester they organize an event where students can browse through all the clubs.Sports: I have literally no idea about this. However, I dont really think that the football team is very good.People: Everyone is super friendly and always ready to help.Advisers: I think I would have probably died without my academic adviser. She was a life saver. She helped me understand the system (I was an international transfer student so their was a bit of a learning curve) and also helped me conquer it.Campus: The campus is beautiful and full of life. We see all the seasons (mainly winter) and the fall is beautiful. We have a lot of squirrels and rabbits running around the campus. The art work is unique and meaningful as well.Restaurants: There are definitely some great ones out there but I am not going to take any names because I dont want to turn this into an advertisement but I do have a favorite Chinese place, Brazilian place (dead giveaway), Italian place (obvious again) and a Mexican place.Safety Escort: From evening 6pm to morning 6am, the safety escort service ensures that you get home safely. This service was the only reason I could stay on campus till as late as I wanted.Welch/Downtown/etc: There are some good bars out there and most places have a great university feel to them, especially if they are located on Welch.Transportation with Ames: Cyride is pretty great, especially with the app, it makes it super easy to track the buses. The buses are also free with the student ID which makes travel by cyride very budget friendly.Transportation in general: There are a few cab companies out there but they are expensive. Moreover, uber is very limited. Transportation to places like Des Moines is available but again, is expensive.Overall, my experience at Iowa State was very positive. I enjoyed my time there and made a lot of good friends.

I like that if you just a start-up and don't have the budget for software as well as do not require more than 5 docs per month, you can use it for free. For me, even free option has enough functionality.
