I’m going to be honest, I thought the associate exams verged on comically easy. This isn’t because AWS is easy or simple or even straightforward…it’s not. It’s because there is very little effort put into writing the associate level exams and the average applicant will have seen up to half the questions before just by studying publicly available resources. Leading up to my first exam, I was consistently told that they were one of the hardest certifications to land. You were recommended to have AT LEAST one year’s worth of AWS experience and should read all the white papers and etc. Going in to the exam with assorted experience on the platform won’t get you a pass, but there are so many study resources out there that cover questions that are either extremely similar to the exam or identical. In fact, out of the 10 questions on the developer sample questions provided by Amazon, 8 were covered word for word on my 55 question exam. I’m pretty sure the solutions architect exam was 9/10 out of the 60 questions I had. That’s pretty much a free 15%, and that’s not even counting the questions you’re bound to have from resources like ACloudGuru and CloudAcademy. I didn’t purchase the practice exam for 20$, but I have had friends tell me they got another 4–5 questions repeated word for word on there on their real exam. I personally remember having 20–25 questions out of the 55 on my developers exam that I had seen word for word before with the same exact answer choices. Combine that with the ~7–8 questions I would classify as ‘brain-dead’ questions (One question was basically asking you if Amazons Relational Database service was NoSQL, True or False, which also takes the cake for being a very poorly worded question). In summary, we are looking at a ~50% without even having to think…the pass rate is set via statistical modeling, but typically, a 70% will be a pass as well as a score in the high 60s. On that notion, it is very possible to pass simply GUESSING all the questions you don’t know (assuming you were like me where you had a free 50%) and are likely to score a passing grade since many of the questions are only 2–3 choices. Last but not least, it can be very easy to guess correctly on questions simply by using common sense. “You want to accomplish <some specific task in cloud formation that outputs this result to users upon completion>. What part of the template do you modify?? Is it Resources? Mappings? Outputs??? Yeah, what do you think it is?
