What is the best thing to do when a grenade is thrown at you?

I got injured by a hand grenade once. Here is what happened:During the war in Kosovo I fought for the Kosovo Liberation Army. We used to make booby traps out of hand grenades. Usually you activate the grenade (you pull out the pin) before installing the trap. These traps were mostly wire activated. We worked normally at night and in close vicinity to enemy positions and therefore in absolute darkness. So one night I went with two other soldiers to a small forest near an enemy position. We expected the enemy troops to attack us the next morning and wanted to booby trap some of their expected approach routes. Like usual we set our trap, but this time there were two dogs around, curious about our business. I tried to hush them away, but I didn't dare to make any noise. Worse, these two dogs took an immediate interest in our wire trap. There was nothing we could do. I heard the sniffing of a dog, then a click when the grenade was activated. I then shouted "Attention grenade" to my comrades to warn them and turned away from the grenade while covering my ears. After a few seconds there was a loud bang and I felt my body go numb for a moment. Then I felt something warm and wet in my right boot. The warmth was growing and I realized that this must be blood. There was no time to care for my injuries as the enemy was alarmed by now. Luckily I could walk and we made it to safe territory. One of the dogs was probably dead, but the other one came with us. The sun rose and the enemy began its attack with a massive artillery barrage. With my two fellow soldiers I found a relatively safe place for cover and we had a look at the injuries. I just had some grenade pellets in my foot near my ankle which we pulled out with a pocket knife. Our furry friend had one of his front paws injured. One of my comrades attended to its wounds while we were feeding it some cookies. After a couple of days we came back to the area to recover unactivated booby traps (to use them again) and found the other dog lying dead near the place of the explosion.I had some more "encounters" with hand grenades, but didn't get harmed in any of them. During my time in Bosnia I recall that everytime we entered a local bar, we sat down in the place we deemed the most safe in case somebody throws a hand grenade inside. This was a constant problem during the war in Bosnia, but this subject is already covered by some very good answers here, so I won't go into detail.Back to the question, here is what I consider the best thing(s) to do when a grenade is thrown at you:1. Situation awareness. In combat you always have to think preventively. "What happens if..?" So you are usually prepared and are able to react quickly.2. Warn your buddies!A thrown hand grenade makes no noise, so your comrades might not be aware of the danger. Shout "Grenade!" or something.3. CoverDepending on the situation, the make of the grenade and the place where it landed it's impossible to give a general advice of what to do; to stand still, run away, duck for cover? Still, to jump for cover might be the best thing to do in this case (3 seconds delay). But if you think you have no time for that then just turn your back towards the grenade.Sometimes you might even have time to kick the grenade away from you or your friends. Or you might be able to throw something over the grenade to absorb at least a part of the blast, like a flak jacket for example.Normally, if the guy who threw the grenade knew his job, you shouldn't be able to catch it and throw it back. This is more for Hollywood movies.Still, every situation is different and quick thinking is demanded. Therefore No. 1 (situation awareness).4. Cover your ears and protect your eyesThe sound of the detonation can leave you deaf. This is all the advice I can give with good conscience. Even if you would know that the hand grenade would be thrown in 6 feet distance and with a 3 seconds delay, still, hand grenade types differ in explosive force, type of charge, yield etc. and therefore one cannot say exactly what a person should do. It also matters a lot where the grenade is thrown, if it's in a building or in the open, on a hard floor or mud. What might be the best thing to do in one situation might get you killed in another.

What are some important things you should know when buying a house?

Just a few ideas of mine because sometimes it’s the little things in life that can make a big difference. With regards to electrical outlets, if you know exactly where your bed and nightstands will be then make sure the outlets aren’t going to be covered up by a headboard, thus eliminating the need for extension cords. You could also specify receptacles with built-in usb ports for charging things in the bedrooms, kitchen, office, den etc.I also want to echo Jonathan’s comment about using commercial quality receptacles and switches because they’re so worth it. At the same time ask for lighted switches in dark areas such as the garage and dark stairwells.Once you know where your wall mounted TV’s are going to be then specify a recessed a.k.a. clock outlet to make it a cleaner and less cluttered installation. Also have them install a CAT6 drop to the TV as well so that you’re not at the mercy of WiFi bandwidth restrictions.Finish the garage. It’s so much easier to have the builder include finishing the interior of your garage now than later. This could include drywall finishing, proper lighting, an epoxy coating on the floor, storage, work benches etc. They’re not for everybody but I happen to be a fan of central vac systems and it’s a lot easier to install one before the wallboard goes up. Once you use one you’ll wonder why you ever used a normal vacuum before. To minimize the noise at the head unit you could vent to the outdoors and/or include a muffler. In my house the previous owner built what looked like a small closet in the basement den but it’s actually a tiny little room big enough for a cat pan complete with a kitty access hole. It also happens to be where the sump pit is as well as the radon remediation fan. So if you are going to have indoor cats you might consider something similar because it minimizes the smell and the mess. While we’re on the subject of lower level living spaces a powder room is a great convenience to have down there, assuming you are building a basement.Consider talking to your HVAC installer about adding a humidification system to your furnace if you live in a climate where the winters are dry. Better for you and your furniture.Talk to the plumber about the length of time it takes to get hot water to the furthest taps. Nobody likes having to stand in a shower for 30 seconds waiting for the hot water to get there. You might end up installing a demand water heater in or close to the bathroom or kitchen as a supplement to your normal water heater.
