What was your NEET preparation story?

I was a two times dropper and a non-coaching aspirant when I finally cracked the medical entrances(NEET, AIIMS and JIPMER) in 2019. My story of NEET preparation is a story full of ups and downs, twists and turns and varying emotions. It is a story of 4 years of preparation beginning in 2015 finally leading to success in 2019. This story may get long, but I suggest you read it till end. Perhaps it would act as a motivation for all the self-study, non-coaching aspirants like me. So here it goes-It was April 2015. After class 10 exams, many of my friends were joining various coaching institutes for medical and engineering entrances. Initially, I also decided to join coaching for NEET preparations. My family was also supportive in this regard. But later, I decided not to join a coaching and prepare by myself as I had done always. I was the topper of one of the most reputed schools of Jharkhand and I had never gone to any tuition classes during my school years. I had confidence in myself, so I decided not to join any coaching and prepare by myself. In Class 11 and 12, I did not join any tuition class also. Preparing for boards as well as for medical entrances all by myself was a very hectic task to do. Gradually, I lost interest in my NEET preparations and wasted a lot of time playing PC games and watching movies. In 2016, Jio was offering unlimited data for free and it was when I was in class 12. It wrecked havoc in my life. In class 11 only, I had purchased ALLEN and Aakash DLP(Aakash ITutor course) materials. But, since I was too busy in my addictions, I never really focused on them. Although I gave regular online DLP test series, I fooled my parents and especially myself by cheating in them and bringing false high scores and ranks. Finally in 2017, a few months before the Boards, I got a little serious about my preparations but the pressure of Boards overtook my zeal to prepare for NEET. When the results of CBSE class 12 boards were out in May 2017, I had scored 91.2% marks. Although it was not that great, still I was satisfied because I knew how I had wasted my time and it could have gone worse. Next month, when all the results of the medical entrances were out, my performance was bad as I had expected. But, my family was expecting something else all thanks to the lies I had told them. They were completely shocked. But, I decided to drop one year and my family was supportive as before. This time again my family was in favour of coaching, but again I decided not to join any. I don't exactly know why I took such a decision. Since I had been a topper in my school and all the toppers of previous batches of my school were studying in institutes like AIIMS Delhi, JIPMER, UCMS, Grant Medical College etc., everybody had high expectations from me. Whenever I attended a function, people used to taunt me. My failure had given opportunity to many people to speak their evil out who never got an opportunity before. My grandfather had always been proud of me. But, when people came to him and taunted, he felt very bad and I even saw him weep on several occasions. I felt very bad because all these things were happening because of me. So, I decided to work hard to bring back my lost reputation. As the time passed, I began my preparation once again all by myself. My parents, my grandfather and my uncle provided me with constant motivation. This time I went to test centre on every alternate Sundays to give my ALLEN DLP test series. The centre was 100 kms away from my home. But my father took me there on his motorcycle every time without fail whatever be the weather. Although I had prepared quite well this time, but in 2018 I once again lost. This time I had lost by a very less margin. It all happened not due to less preparation, but due to panic, heat of the moment and other unlucky circumstances during the exam. In AIIMS exam, I went to toilet between the exam and when I returned, those people at the centre told that they had to do the biometrics again. Their computer was not working. So, they decided to open and set another computer for the biometrics and this took 15 minutes. All that while, they did not allow me to write the exam and the time was running on my computer. This loss of 15 minutes created a lot of panic as every minute is precious in exams like AIIMS and I ultimately ended up scoring bad. In JIPMER 2018 my AIR was 1986. Seeing this rank, you might say that I would obviously have performed well in other exams and would have got a seat in some government medical college. But, unfortunately this was not the case. In AIIMS 2018, my AIR was around 6000. I even went to AIIMS Delhi for the open round of counselling as two new AIIMS had opened that year. But, I returned empty handed.Failing two times took a heavy toll on me. I was utterly depressed. It took several months for me to begin my preparations and even more months to begin it seriously. This time also I refused to go to coaching and decided to give my final attempt. I just focused on reading summary and solving as many questions as I could, especially the previous year questions of NEET, AIIMS and JIPMER. I also took NEETPrep course especially to study physics. It was quite helpful. I also continued giving ALLEN DLP online test series. It was the month of April, 2019. My grandfather who was a very active and healthy person, suddenly fell ill. He was hospitalised. The condition in my home was not good. We were all very sad. Still I continued my preparations. The night before NEET, my grandfather became serious and my father had to rush to the hospital. Although the condition was not good and there was tension, I gave my NEET exam. It did not go as per my expectations. I counted my marks. It was 584. I was pleased that at least I would be able to get a government medical college this time and I immediately rushed to the hospital to tell my grandfather the good news. He thanked God and I could see he was pleased from inside, but his health condition prevented him from expressing it. I began preparing for the upcoming AIIMS examination. On 26th May 2019, after giving my AIIMS exam, I once again visited the hospital. It was the last time I talked to my grandfather. He passed away on 30th May 2019. I was shocked and depressed. On 2nd June, although I was in no mood to give my JIPMER exam, my father insisted me to give it as my grandfather would have wanted me to do the same. So, with literally trembling feet and pain in my head, I gave it. During the 13 days rituals of my grandfather's death, all the results were declared. I had got 584 marks in NEET, AIR 1786 in AIIMS and AIR 1188 in JIPMER. I finally took admission in AIIMS Patna but my grandfather was not there to enjoy the accomplishment of his dreams. The day when the AIIMS results were declared, there were tears in everybody's eyes. I had redeemed myself even after going through quite a troublesome journey. The mouths of everyone who taunted me and my family were shut once and for all. I could enjoy my days once again. So, this was my complete NEET preparation story. When I started my NEET preparation by myself, there was no one to provide me proper guidance to crack NEET by myself. My father used to guide me in Biology and Chemistry but in Physics, I was completely clueless. I learnt from my own failures through trial and error. That is the reason I write on Quora so that through my experiences, I could guide the aspirants, especially those who are droppers and are travelling on this path by themselves.Hope you liked the answer. Thanks for reading. You can follow me @Atul Kumar Vaibhav
