The Obama campaign responded aggressively to misinformation about the candidate, so within just a few days of Jim Geraghty at the National Review[1] suggesting Obama could quell the rumors that his middle name was “Mohammed” with a birth certificate, he released the certificate in June of 2008 through the Daily KOS website and at his own “Fight The Smears” site.[2] I think the strategy worked as Obama was elected president despite a torrent of smears and fake claims.Obama may be the first candidate for president to publish a copy of his birth certificate, but he is not the last, and he was not the first one to face a controversy. It was I who asked this question.I am one of those senior citizens who don’t have a birth certificate.No one bothered during all these years to ask me for it.I was born in a house in a village in Palakkad District of Kerala in India.The absence of a birth certificate was never problem till recently.I was admitted to school in Mumbai in the early nineteen fifties casually by just filling a form and paying an admission fee and whatever date my father filled up in that form became my official date of birth for my entire life and that date was mentioned in my high school leaving certificate which was used while applying for my college admissions and later for my jobs.I used a copy of my school leaving certificate as a testimonial for all my future documents and my driving license, my election Identification card for voting. My passport and now my Aadhaar card all carry this information.There is complete consistency regarding this.No one in India ever demanded my original birth certificate issued by the corporation in the town / city nearest to my place of birth.But while applying for my green card (which I considered having, some years ago but have now given up), I was told it would not be possible unless I produced a birth certificate or a certificate of non availability of a birth certificate or no record of my birth from the municipal authorities in the place of my birth.This is now beyond me. I cannot run behind all this at this late stage in my life. I can’t be hanging around Government offices in Kerala when I live in Devanahalli.That is why I wish that in these days of E Governance, a simple sworn affidavit from me supported by certified copies of my aadhaar Card or passport, both issued by the Government of India should suffice to issue me an equally valid alternative birth certificate with the same date and place as mentioned in the other documents.I wonder how many others like me have had this problem and how they solved it.I would welcome it if they shared their experiences.—
