PDF Editor FAQ

What is it like to have an extremely high IQ?

I have an IQ in the top 2% of the world. Some of the symptoms of that include:I figure out things very fast and absorb a lot of knowledge quickly. I can often learn something so fast, that I can instantly teach it to others within 15 minutes of learning it myself.Although I am not sure this is related, I have a poor memory. I learn quickly, but I don't remember things well. So I constantly have to relearn. This may be just me, but that is how my mind works. I can usually relearn things so quickly, that no one realizes that I forgot it.Growing up, I felt alienated at school. I never fit in, classes were boring, and there was no one to talk to that shared the same interests or who could keep up with me (as far as speed of learning). As a result, I dumbed myself down, and tried to act like everyone else... which didn't work out so well.Sometimes you think so far ahead of everyone else around you, that your conclusions seem absurd to them. It is not that they can't understand what you understand, it's just that you have already gone through all the possible arguments and counter arguments in your head, and have already come to a conclusion that they are not ready for, since they don't have the same facts or line of thinking.I am constantly afraid that I will take advantage of people, because I know what buttons to push and know exactly what to do to get what I want. But I hold myself back, because I do not want to be manipulative or be perceived as being manipulative.I am extremely frustrated that being smart does not necessarily mean material success, and know people who have very low IQ's who are rich, simply because they did what works. IQ is not an indicator of financial success. It can be hard to related to people, because your interests are not the same as other people. And it can sometimes be easy to get distracted, since your mind works so fast, and you think of so many possibilities. It can be hard to keep focus. And you get tired of being picked on by the average person, who calls you arrogant, nerd, geek or worse things just because you are smart. If you are not careful, it can significantly lower your self-esteem and will to live and contribute to the world.

Do Western Europeans consider Czechia as a poor country?

First, because I am still receiving totally uninformed comments, let me emphasize that Czechia is a high income country, in the same group as Germany or the U.S., check e.g. this OECD map: Country Income Groups (World Bank Classification) (chartsbin.com) This is 1 level above “upper middle”, two levels above “lower middle”, and three levels above “low income”. Also, Brexit has turned Czechia into a net payer within the new EU budget and an above-average country in the EU economically. The Czech purchase-parity GDP per capita is not only above Poland, Hungary, Slovakia; Slovenia and Croatia; plus Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia; and obviously above Bulgaria and Romania, and (30%) above Greece and Portugal for some 5 years, but since 2020, it is also above Italy and Spain. Check the International Monetary Fund leaderboard at Wikipedia. In the nominal counting, Czechia is above all those 14 EU countries except for Italy and Spain so far.Now again:Do Western Europeans consider Czechia as a poor country? Most of them do. Most Western Europeans haven’t been to Czechia or have only seen it shortly and when they spend a few days here, they are usually shocked to find out that Czechia is equally rich or richer than their homeland from many perspectives. This view is the result of two main influencesSimple ignorance of geography and the understandable extrapolation of the general knowledge that “Czechia was in the Soviet bloc” (which completely neglects the key fact that the Soviet bloc was a hugely non-uniform area whose history of many centuries is already more important than the relatively short-lived shared communist history)Intentional indoctrination in the media in recent years that tries to paint Central and European countries as bad, for ideological reasons, and their being represented as poor is a part of this hurtful imageIn reality, by the purchase-parity-based GDP per capita (almost $40k a year), Czechia has already surpassed Portugal, Greece, and – several months ago – also Spain. By this counting, Czechia is also richer than every single land in East Germany, despite the trillions that moved from West Germany to East Germany. Czechia stands above 90% of the EU average. The nominal GDP is still lower by “dozens of percent” than that of the countries that have avoided communism but it’s the purchase-parity-based GDP that affects the human lives more readably. Moreover, the nominal GDP may grow quickly if the Czech currency strengthens quickly enough and such a process could be compatible with the prosperity of Czechs.Aside from the “Cold War era” type of poverty, in which Czechia is still indeed poorer and sometimes you can see it, there are the new aspects that become increasingly more important. Suddenly, one finds out that Czechs may buy much more beer for their monthly salary than any European nation. Czechs have cleaner streets and lower crime rate than most in Western Europe. One feels free, the healthcare system and police sort of work flawlessly. It is possible to openly discuss the cases when it isn’t the case – there is no institutionalized protection of privileged group that would prevent such a discussion.

For those who cracked gate and went into IITs and IISc, how has life changed? I mean we all aspire seeing the research opportunities yes, apart from that, what else has been of groundbreaking revelation? Would love to hear some experiences.

I had done my B.Tech. from College of Engineering Trivandrum which is the top State level Engineering college in Kerala. Everyone regards Kerala as a place where studies is given at most importance. But strangely "higher studies" is gaining importance only recent times. So, "being in CET" is considered a great achievement for an engineering student in Kerala . As expected hardly anyone in CET care for giving GATE during B.Tech. and I was no exception. In GATE I secured a rank of 330 and my friend got a rank of 213. I'm mentioning my friend because we both were school mates and discussed subject matters during B.Tech. almost everyday. Strangely enough, discussions about GATE never came up. Our discussions were about university exams and lab practicals as that was the world for us. So, when GATE result came, we both were extremely surprised. To tell the truth we didn't know how good or how bad our rank was. We calculated the percentile and 99.7 and 99.8 surely sounded good. Anyway we just applied to all top IITs and IISc without even knowing their difference between the two.We got a call from IISc. SERC for interview but our beloved Kerala university were not willing to change the exam date even though about 7 students requested for it (who cares for 7 students doing masters in IISc). Thankfully we had OBC reservation and got through to ME CSA. So, our next aim- how can we graduate from IISc.?- it is a place chosen above all IITs.IISc. lifeBangalore was no strange place for me, but IISc sure was. First time staying in a hostel, first time seeing so many people from North and East India. And the academic pressure. I always had my best friend with me but within a short while got company of people from various parts of India and we sure had a wonderful time. We had traveled together to Coorg, Mangalore, Ooty, Calicut, Mysore etc. during IISc. period and those moments were really enjoyable. Just told to show that IISc. is not just about research."IISc. is all about Mathematics" is a belief. And both of us were poor in that thanks to the importance of Mathematics in Engineering colleges of Kerala. Kerala university follows a book written by a University Prof. (India would be a much better if they ban University profs. from publishing sub standard books) and we were all used to just referring it the day before exam and still getting 90-100 marks. But these things won't work in IISc. - if you know the concept and can think, you can score in exam. If you mug up everything, you might get 0 in exam. But even if you do assignments properly and has minimum logic you can expect to be an above average student in IISc. So, I could easily be an above average student. Some students had to take 4 courses a semester while some (those doing Research) just 1 and due to relative grading this isn't good for those taking 4 courses. But as IIScians say "grades don't matter". And one of our senior said this "it is hard to fail in a subject than to top"- surely TRUE. To fail, one has to cheat in exam and get caught. After the first semester itself I got the difference of IISc. A place where real knowledge matters and not exam knowledge. A place where discussions are meant to be innovations. Though I was in no place to contribute, it was wonderful just to be among such kind of people. Most of the 30 CSA profs were way above the standard we expect from a Prof. Some of them were really excellent in teaching too. As I found Mathematical Logic interesting I started taking courses related to it and if we do that in IISc., marks are easier to get. Then came another important twist for me. In CSA, students used to manage the lab systems including mail, web servers. When our senior sent a mail for volunteering for this I applied even though I had no idea about those. But I ended up one of the student admin- I guess in no other institute I would have been able to do so- again a bit of IISc. philosophy- if you want to do something just do it, no one is going to stop you. To tell the truth, being a student admin taught me many many things- both technical as well as managerial and I almost became a qualified system administrator without doing any course. For my M.E. thesis I was fortunate to work under Dr. Uday Kumar Reddy B., in Multi Core lab. We had a few bunch of talented people there and that time was really nice. Placement was like in every week 1-2 company used to come and hardly 50 CS students were attending it- so getting placed is a guarantee. I got placed in Nvidia. Even after that there were many off-campus interviews from likes of IBM-IRL, Google, Walmart, DE Shaw, and some others. these companies contacted us directly and not through IISc. placement. If anyone says IISc. placement is bad- it just means he/she is bad. Sure, no international placement happens on campus, but in my batch itself people are working in Google US, Facebook London, US etc. Both me and my friend applied for Ph.D. positions in INRIA France, and recommendation from IISc. profs made our applications easy. One more thing is IISc. ME is more about course work than research. We have to take 10 courses and this covers almost 3 semesters. Only a few students really do research in the remaining semester. This is one thing I would like to be changed in IISc.Now any ground breaking revelation? I was placed in Philips after my B.Tech. Even if I was offered the same job for same salary after M.E. in IISc., I would have been happy. Because the 2 years of IISc. life was much much more valuable than 2+10+2+4 years of education I had before. If not anything else, I understood what is meant by education. I have seen so many people asking "how to get to Google, FB?". Well, why not think of starting one like Google? Because they have never been to a place like IISc. Even today there aren't any such big company from IISc., but hopefully this won't be for long.
