PDF Editor FAQ

What was it like to be growing up in India during the 50s, 60s and 70s?

Female. Grew up in a village and a small town in South India in the 70s.Bought and relished wild berries being sold near my school at 5 paise per cup. Ice candy, (sweet ice in virulent colours of yellow and majenta) at 5 paise was sold by boys on cycles. Icecream (only one flavor) was available in ‘cold houses’ for 50 paise! It was a government school; the one and only for that small village.Sat on benches, girls and boys separate. There were no desks. In third standard, had to make thread from cotton using an instrument called ‘takali’; a thin metal rod with a disc attached at one end.(My memory is very vague here; the thread I made was a flop!)Exchanged peacock feathers and coloured chalks with friends.Played ‘kallaata’ (tossing and catching 5 pebbles on the other side of the palm), jibli (hopscotch) with 4 squares with friends and cards and carrom with cousins.Got soapboxes and notebooks as prizes in lower primary school.Schoolday in that village school went on all through the night and the whole village attended.Watched cycle ‘stunts’. The cyclist would cycle continuously in a circle path for a fixed number of days (I remember it as three) to the accompaniment of noisy music.Watched ‘Kambala’, (the buffalo race)No uniforms in government schools.Made rough books from left over pages from old notebooks. Used old calendars to bind our notebooks.Learnt movie songs by heart for fun.Played throwball and tennikoit in highschool.Sometimes bought orange candies for 5 paise or toffees for 6 paise.Fanta was a rare treat. Sweets were only on birthdays and festivals, mom-cooked ones. Or sometimes when my aunt experimented:)Churning curds to make butter and butter milk was a weekend chore. Most of the children walked to school. Had rain holidays declared by the school authorities instead of the collector. AFTER reaching school:)Loved those holidays:)Didn’t have PTA meetings.Beginning from the age of twelve, went to matinee shows of movies with my younger sister and sat in ‘women’s only’ section to watch the movie. Remember watching ‘Avalude Raavukal’ by ourselves:)Hindi movies were released in my town 2 months after the initial releasing date. So boasted with my friends about the SEVEN brand new Hindi movies I’d seen in Bombay when I’d visited my aunt. Julie and Sevak were among them:)Vacations were for visiting relatives. Cousins were closer than friends. Relatives had scolding rights;)Didn’t have pocket money.Attended classical music classes , typing classes, tailoring classes. The last two are being useful even now:)We got the telephone when I was in 4th standard. Had to contact the operator for connecting to a local number. Had to book a trunk call for outside calls. The call could take any time between 2 to 20 hours to connect. The first time I watched TV(black and white, Weston TV) was in Bombay, when I was in 6th, in my uncle’s house. After the first day, I learnt to grab my seat early; otherwise, neighbours would crowd in and I wouldn’t get a place to sit.My first TV movie was ‘Tere Ghar ke Samne’, a Dev Anand Nutan starrer:)Started reading at the age of six; first Kannada, later English.Haven’t stopped yet.Yeah, led a peaceful (dull?:)) life.

What is something that took you way too long to realize is not normal?

This dates back to when I was 13.Moral science class. We were maturing, and thus there were lessons on adolescence topics like crushes, boyfriends, menstruation, etc.Our teacher narrated us a story,It was on the lines of:“You know, I visited this place, and there was a girl from our school, who wore a (very) short dress. She wished me Good Evening, but I didn't even look at her.I don't talk to “such type” of girls.Such type? You mean, those who wear short dresses?Okay.I see.Thirteen year young me, and all others, gravely nodded their heads,Yeah true. Why should we talk to such (bad) girls?Three years later,The sixteen year old me realized where the thirteen year young girl was wrong in her understanding. She was sorry for judging “that girl with the short dress.”Image source: Google
