When I first got here thirty some years ago, someone told me that comparing to Asia or Europe, America has no culture. Yet, I found this young country is actually a beautiful culture that takes the best of every other culture and blend them together as its own. A mixing pot indeed.Back then, there was not even that many cultural events and festivals as it is today but we were busy adopting and making this place home. I was a refugee from Vietnam. A Vietnamese of Chinese descent. I started working the fourth day I set foot in this country and hasn't stopped working until last year when I hit 63. My first job was working as a drapery installer for a mobile home manufacturer at $2.80 an hour. I didn't even know what a mobile home was when I got the job.My first cultural experience was the Sawdust festival at Laguna. My co worker, Bill, a seven foot tall Angelo America got us the ticket to see the Moving Arts where famous paintings were enacted by artists. Ever since then, I started paying attention to local cultural events. I lived in Riverside, California, worked during the day and attended local college at night. Took me sixteen years of night school to get my MBA.American culture to me is a celebration of all things immigrants treasured and brought with them. You can find all sorts of ethnic food and cultural festivals. There are national holidays as well as religious and commercial holidays and celebrations. New Years day in January, Valentine in February, If you want to celebrate the Chinese and Vietnamese New Year in February, you can go to China Town in Los Angeles or Little Saigon in Orange County, Easter in March with all the bunnies and sermons, April Fools Day, St Patrick's Day for the Irish, Cingo de Mayo for the Mexicans in May, July fourth is the big Independence Day with fireworks, Summer filled with music at the park filled with free concerts playing Rock and Roll; country music; and Latin Salsa. Santa Monica and all the coast line beaches are great places to spend the summer. Then there is Labor Day in September, Halloween in October. Idlywild is the mountain town where everyone dress up and the entire town is fun filled with all merchants handing out candies by the truck load. Then came November with Thanksgiving followed by Christmas in December where the whole country is decorated with holiday trimmings.That to me, is American culture, if you want to see an Italian Opera, you can go to the Opera house. Every weekend, there is a rodeo where everyone can enjoy the western BBQ and all things cowboy. If you like the beach scene, there's are endless coastlines from San Diego all the all north until you reach Canada. It's how you blend in and what you want to make it as.Even now at a retirement age, I spend a great deal of time at the local senior center where I can learn to draw, paint, gardening, play chess or poker, even Mah Jong, with other seniors, there are karaoke setups where I can sing my heart out with other seniors of different races. To me, I am home with a culture that allows me to be what I want to be and do what I want to do. With my American Passport, I can actually have access and traveled all around the world and experience any culture I choose to visit for America has given me the education, the training, the wealth, and freedom is its best culture.What I 'm trying to say is that it's not all about Hollywood and Wall St, You couldn't have been removed or detached from it. Unless you are in isolation, you are living it.
