Absolutely. In high school, we teach everything we can in order to make people college and career prepared. Though I went through most of college without taking notes, that was largely because I was foolish enough to dupe myself into thinking that I was a better student without notes. I doubt that anyone can truly say that the right note taking system coupled with the right study style won't be effective.We typically teach Cornell Style notes. Unfortunately, that doesn't work for everyone. I think we should teach a variety of note taking styles in order to meet the needs of the widest variety of students. In fact, the first assignment I give my students every year is to take five day of notes in a class which isn't mine. It not only starts them out on the right path, but every once in a while, I have a student tell me that it has actually changed their path for the year in the right direction.At least as important is for teachers to teach students about how to study. They need a place and dedicated time to study, and the studying shouldn't include finishing homework or classwork. Note taking goes hand in hand with studying. There is little reason to do one without the other.

The syllabus is so wide that it is impossible to remember everything. Hence, emphasis should always be on understanding. But we do understand that there are many aspects of UPSC preparation where memory also plays an important role.Similar to our small habits for UPSC aspirants post we will list some memory hacks -Revise :Revision is extremely important to improve memory. The fleeting nature of memory, requires constant rejuvenation. This we can improve by revising multiple times. It is for this reason that we emphasize on multiple revisions.With each revision it takes lesser time to remember. This strategy has been highlighted in our post outlining strategy to prepare for prelims in last two months.Recall :After reading a topic, you should do this exercising of recalling what you have read. For example, if you have read all the Directive Principle of State Policy then try to recall all of them on the next day. Repeat this every day till you are able to recall perfectly. One of our test series student has come to us - saying that she is not able to remember Fundamental Rights, DPSPs and Fundamental Duties even after multiple revisions. She is making the same mistakes every time she is taking Polity tests. Our advice to her was- she should make a list of all articles from 13 to 51A with a short description of the article beside the article number. Every morning she should start with jotting down all the articles she could remember. Read all the articles she missed. Repeat this every morning till she is able to get all the articles relating to Fundamental Rights, DPSPs and Fundamental duties correct.SQ3R strategy :While reading any text book, follow the SQ3R: Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review strategy. This study strategy helps students "get it" the first time they read a text by teaching students how to read and think like an effective reader.Cornell Note taking method:If you are attending classes for GS or optional, use Cornell Note taking method, while taking notes.Mind Maps:Making mind maps helps in following ways:It will be helpful to revise quickly.Making good mind maps takes efforts but it makes sure it lead to better understanding of the topic.Key aspects of a certain topic will be mapped in your mind making it easier to recall.Take Tests:Taking tests is important to review what one has learnt. By taking tests and reviewing where one has gone wrong, one will be able to remember better the concepts where he/she has made mistakes. While attempting a practice test, attitude should be that of learning from one’s mistakes. After attempting a practice test, one has to review the performance and see why mistakes were made, where the concepts were clear or not and so on.Apart from the above, living a healthy life style( food and adequate sleep) also helps in better memory retention.Some of the techniques to improve memory in general are given here.
