What was it like to play chess against Garry Kasparov?

A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to meet and play in a simulataneous exhibition against Garry Kasparov.I was I think 14 at the time and was invited along with some other talented English junior players to take part.I lost after over three hours, having blundered into a lost king and pawn ending. Only a few moves earlier the position was a draw with some accurate defence. Kasparov won every game he played in the exhibition, but I think the fact I came as close as I did shows he's not quite infallible. What was it like to play him? With his reputation you treat his every move, however innocuous, as if it could be a master stroke. His gaze is incredibly piercing too (see above), but he hardly has a poker face - you can tell exactly how he feels. He tried to play with minimal risk against me, which makes sense in a simul, but this did lead to him missing a strong tactical opportunity in the early middle game which let me back in the game.I am very thankful that I have been given the opportunity to play one of the greatest chess players of all time.

Why do EA and Activision get so much hate in the gaming industry? Are there any examples of what makes them so bad?

Where to even begin with these two corporation’s list of crimes?EAObvious one first. EA has bought and killed many great publishers and franchises. Maxis, The Sims, Pandemic, Visceral, Westwood, Origin Systems to name a few and it looks like Bioware might be next. These are great unique developers that were ground up by EA in pursuit of even more money.EA love shitty DRM. They used Securom on Spore which made the game almost impossible for paying customers to play but didn’t even slow pirates down. EA currently use Denuvo on all their games which has been shown to massively impact performance again only for paying customers. Then there are the incidents where they tied game installations to hardware so if you upgraded your PC at any point the game would lock you out. When DLC became a big thing instead of viewing it as a way to extend a game’s life and allow customers to experience more of the games they loved EA decided it was cheaper, easier and more profitable to carve content out of the game and sell that to customers instead. In relation to the above point EA love to fill out a game with DLC and then replace it with a new version with all the stuff taken out. The Sims is the classic example of this where the Sims 4 had less stuff in it than the Sims 3 even without DLC so that EA could sell you pools and toddlers later (Public outcry forced them to do it for free).EA love to embrace the worse practices of the gaming industry including loot boxes, microtransactions, online passes, deluxe editions and always online requirements are just some of the bullshit EA has tried to pretend is normal.EA have been sued multiple times for the poor working conditions of their employees with forced, unpaid overtime being a particularly big problem. Those are all the general problems with EA now for some specificsSim City a traditionally single player game had an always online requirement. This ruined the experience for many as firstly EA’s servers couldn’t handle the game at launch so customers couldn’t play the game that they had paid for. Secondly as part of the “multiplayer experience” players had severely limited options to encourage them to share with their neighbours. The worst part of this controversy is that EA said that it was impossible for the game to work offline before removing said requirement when it suited them.Star Wars Battlefront 2 had a pay-to-win, grindy multiplayer economy with gambling in a full priced $60 game aimed at children. This behaviour is utterly disgusting. I could script a 20 minute video about this and it wouldn’t be enough.EA said that singleplayer games were dead because it didn’t suit them that they couldn’t force microtransactions into them (not that they didn’t try and we will come to that) and because singleplayer games cost more to develop than reskinning their multiplayer games every year.Just about everything in regards to Dead Space 3. First they make a singleplayer survival horror game (one of the best in the generation) into a co-op action shooter. Then they force in microtransactions completely breaking the excellent combat system to do so. Finally they kill the franchise because their failed abomination didn’t sell better than any game in that genre could. They have monopolised most sports genres and then release identical games every year. This has become increasingly bad with the success of their Ultimate Team mode which is also a gambling infested mode aimed at children. In relation to the above point EA have decided to go to court in Belgium to fight the governments ban on loot boxes. The Belgian government decided that allowing children to gamble was probably not a good idea but EA has decided that it needs to fight that because children are such easy targets.Sabotaging Mass Effect Andromeda then releasing it when it was clearly unfinished. EA farmed out Mass Effect Andromeda’s development to an inexperienced team, took away all their best members to work on Anthem then released the game when it was clearly not done. Then when the game obviously failed they killed the franchise. The recent Battlefield 5 controversy where when customers complained some aspects of the game EA responded with “Well just don’t buy it” and when they didn’t EA went into full panic mode.EA loves lying to their customers because they can. EA will say one thing to the public then turn around and say the opposite to shareholders because EA isn't allowed to lie to them. EA told customers that Star Wars Battlefront 2 had to be a pay-to-win, grindy, loot box infested piece of shit because games are expensive and they need to make money. They then told investors that Battlefront was a huge success even without microtransactions and that the microtransactons were just a bonus.Dungeon Keeper mobileActivisionThe general problems with EA extend to Activision as well, poor treatment of employees, shitty treatment of customers, abuse of DLC, shitty DRM, etc. So lets jump straight to specifics.Running franchises into the ground. Whenever Activision has a hit on it’s hands it will run that franchise into the ground. They did it with Rhythm games releasing 14 “Hero” games in 5 years. They did it with Skylanders, releasing a game a year until the market couldn’t bear it. They did it with Tony Hawk games after Underground was such a hit. They are trying to do it with Call of Duty.Speaking of Call of Duty all the Call of Duty games since Black Ops 3 have been loot box infested garbage. They have also split the community with mountains of DLC.Still speaking about Call of Duty there was everything to do with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered. First they bundle it with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s deluxe edition because of the negative response that game got and say that it won’t be available separately so best you order the deluxe edition of a shit game. Then they do release it separately after they suckered enough people out of money. After that they release DLC for a remastered version of an old game that should have included the DLC to begin with for more than the DLC cost for the original game. Then for good measure they fill the game with loot boxes that weren’t in the original version because it wasn’t making enough money for them.Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick lives up to the “tick” part of his name with some of these lovable quotes[1]:"We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games.”"I think we definitely have been able to instill the culture, the skepticism and pessimism and fear that you should have in an economy like we are in today. And so, while generally people talk about the recession, we are pretty good at keeping people focused on the deep depression.""really rewards profit and nothing else." (Concerning Kotick's incentive program for Activision employees)"And Tony, you know if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further."Activision have been premier purveyors of shovelware since their inception. If Activision thinks that they can get way with releasing a broken, unfinished or terrible game then they definitely will. I am not surprised that so many terrible licensed games come from them.Last year Activision filed a patent for a matchmaking system that will “encourage” you to buy microtransactions.[2]“For example, microtransaction engine 128 may identify a junior player to match with a marquee player based on a player profile of the junior player. In a particular example, the junior player may wish to become an expert sniper in a game...Microtransaction engine 128 may match the junior player with a player that is a highly skilled sniper in the game. In this manner, the junior player may be encouraged to make game-related purchases such as a rifle or other item used by the highly skilled sniper.”This is just the stuff off the top of my head. I am sure that people in the comments will bring up many more.Edit: Meant to put this in but forgot because EA has so much specific bullshit it got lost in the shuffle. EA created Origin as their PC client/store which at launch was the equivalent of giving your own computer AIDS. It was bloated, broken and generally terrible. It had security issues while also basically being spyware. The worst part though was that it was named after a developer that EA had bought and killed and was now proudly displaying as a trophy.Footnotes[1] All Your Favorite Bobby Kotick Quotes! - H3XED[2] Activision Patents Matchmaking That Encourages Players To Buy Microtransactions
