But after seeing 35 cities, which is only a small part of China I would say it is an amazing, diverse, and interesting country. I have always stayed in cheap Chinese family hotels. They do not register you, you have to go to the police station to register, this can take an hour even with translator. Then before the end of the 30 days you go to the local PSB (Public Service Bureau); they check you are registered and make it possible for you to go to immigration to pay for the extension. Two visits to immigration required.If you are not registered you have broken the law and have no hope of getting an extension. After one extension ( 160rmb) you must leave country. Also for extensions you must show USD 100$ A DAY, so for 1. month extension you need $3,000 USD in the bank, print out from online ok. I get my visa in HK. where you get yours from may be very different, a real mess.Update: In Yangshou now for 3 months, (30 day visa (470rmb in HK), 30 day extension, back to HK for visa 3rd month) foreigners very rare here, I asked my travel agent friend why no foreigners?, he says China too expensive now. I was here in Yangshuo first in 1994, last in 2014 and now 2019 in this 5 years, rooms have not gone up but food is up 30 to 100%. Yangshou now has Starbucks, a cinema all at western prices! Best advice is to get a long stay visa from your own country, otherwise are your treated like a criminal if you get a visa in HK. Asking and paying for 30day visa and getting 15 days is not a pleasent experience. (After a 2 month stay) also you need to book accommodation in Shenzen and are not allowed to travel to another provence. In my final exit of China, I'm grilled by the customs lady for 5 mins, she could not believe somone would want to spend 3 months in China, what was I doing there???? Sorry to say, I was happy to be stamped out of China.
