I received a BFA from Tisch for Film and Television in the early 1990′s. NYU is looking for students who can afford the school, are studious, are proactive in their lives and hobbies, and who’s success in life allows them to make generous Alumni donations.The best way to prepare is to take their description of the program and turn it back at them and answer all of their questions with a story or series of stories about how you already 0) always wanted to know about 1) know about 2) dabble in 3) make money doing or 4) are seen a as a leader in the following areas: Ideation, Prototyping, Creative Coding, Media Studies, and Media Law. For example, if you know how to create a prototype in tinkerCAD or 123D Design and print it on a 3D printer, you can impress upon them how you have created projects using this process. If you make money doing it, all the better.You should become familiar with some of the other electives that you can take, and be able to offer similar 0–4 answers to your experiences in the following areas: web design and development, digital cinema, game design and development, sound, live performance, interaction design, and mobile augmented reality. Graduate level special topics courses currently include assistive technology, human computer interfaces (HCI), mobile application development, user experience (UX) design, motion capture, digital fabrication, interactive installation.You should have 7 solid ideas (written in detail, on paper) with 3 back up ideas as to what you what to get out of this degree other than a high paying job. Do you want to be the next Nolan Bushnell, Palmer Luckey or Alberto Menache? Do you want to develop assistive technology for your Autistic nephew? It costs a Lot of money to compete with the vision of being one of the best teams in that sport in the USA. Stanford decided that it only wants to “invest” a certain amount of money in Varsity sports, and that is it. Undergraduate students are Money LOSERS for a high level Research University like Stanford. Therefore, Stanford, as MIT did 12 years ago, is reducing the total number of sports to focus on high Quality in the remaining sports.I am certain you are disappointed not to watch Stanford’s fencing and field hockey teams on national TV or at least PAC-12 TV, but you will just have to do without.Look at Duke athletics to see the number of teams a high quality NCAA D-1 college carries. Stanford is not trying to compete with Harvard or Yale or Princeton. Stanford’s teams are much better than that, and therefore 18 to 22 total teams are sufficient and not 30.If you want 30+ teams go to MIT, after they eliminated 8 teams to save a Total of $320,000 per year…….Undergraduate students Lose money for these colleges…..And we alumni then bear the burden to continue those teams at the club level, like I and many MIT alumni do for the 8 eliminated varsity teams that now play at the “club” level. Probably the same for Stanford. I am sure the Stanford club fencing and field hockey teams will draw the same number of fans.Update: And Dartmouth is following suit: Dartmouth cuts five sports teams and closes Hanover Country Club Dartmouth felt it was spending too much money on sports that did not have any real income (no ticket sales, no TV contract and not enough alumni donations) and also Dartmouth believed it had to recruit too many athletes compared to other students who offer “different things” to the undergraduate student community.I expect a lot more like this over the next couple of years…
