PDF Editor FAQ

Why did Rian Johnson go full SJW in The Last Jedi? Why has pushing an agenda become more important than making an enjoyable movie with a good story, and good characters with admirable qualities?

He didn’t. The Last Jedi did not push an agenda. The Force Awakens is not evidence of forced diversity, but new hiring practices that seek talent for a short list which is in proportion to racial diversity in society. This did nothing to prevent the best actor being hired for the role. Daisy Ridley is only “bad” in the movie because she was told nothing about the backstory of her character, and she admits to being lost as to how to portray her as Rey was such a blank slate. This was because Disney’s CEO Bob Iger, forced Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy to rush out the final episodes in the Skywalker Saga just ahead of the opening of their new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park and Disney Plus streaming service in 2019, leaving him free to leave his job and run for the job of US President against current incumbent Donald J. Trump in 2020 as a Democrat with the support of Hillary Clinton. The complexity of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox forced Iger to set aside his political aspirations and renew both his and Kennedy’s contract until 2021. Very significantly, Bob Iger apologised to fans for rushing out the episodes:I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn't mean we're not going to make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven't been specific about. And we are just at the point where we're going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.'s. But I think we're going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.Source: Bob Iger Talks Disney's Streaming Service, 'Roseanne,' James Gunn and a Coming 'Star Wars' "Slowdown"Put extremely simply, The Force Awakens is an awkward chain of coincidences and The Last Jedi is an amateurish chain of contrivances. The problem is one of a lack of preparation. This led to Lucasfilm not giving Michael Arndt the time he needed to complete his original screenplay. Negative fan reaction to the prequels made Disney risk averse and inclined to make Episode VII a spiritual remake of Episode IV with Luke’s character sidelined so he didn’t overshadow a new young cast whose traits were derived from him. Members of the original cast returned, but were not reunited for new adventures as fans had hoped, but killed off for a cheap manipulative dramatic pay off to set ups which were entirely unearned. As a result the films, though buoyed by nostalgia and misleading advertising, they suffered on repeated viewings, due to their cynical manipulation of the fans and their unoriginality. Many accused Kathleen Kennedy of pushing an agenda of Feminism for being pictured with young women all of which were wearing:THE FORCE IS FEMALEEmblazoned on their T-shirts. Entirely, too much was made of this by some who are so passionate about the franchise that they sought to make Jedi be a religion that would be recognised through their Census responses:Jedi not a religion, ruling saysI accept their point that the Force has no gender and Kennedy may have hurt the feelings of long term male fans who felt excluded by this apparent retcon, but it’s clear it wasn’t meant to alienate anyone in the fandom and those who think that Disney would spend $4.05 billion on a 40 year old franchise largely dominated by male fans only to deliberately exclude and antagonise them to the point that they boycott the brand know nothing about business and fail to realise Disney also own Marvel and have only pleased audiences with its $17.5 billion franchise:List of highest-grossing films - WikipediaI accept mistakes were made by Disney with their handling of social media and this antagonised the fans, many of whom were rightfully disaffected by radical changes to their beloved characters. Warner Bros handled the negative reaction to their DC Extended Universe by going completely silent and listening to fans’ complaints and adjusting the tone of their content to better suit their tastes. I do not excuse those individuals (many I suspect are not even fans of the franchise) who have been racist, sexist, ageist, body shaming, and sent out death threats. This is not a rational response to people who only seek to entertain us, and even though many Star Wars related YouTubers have slammed these toxic individuals they often slip into ad hominem attacks and represent Kathleen Kennedy in the guise of the evil Emperor, Darth Sidious.By all means criticise her and call her incompetent, but refrain from demonising her with these disrespectful thumbnails. It only weakens your argument through the addition of superfluous bias.Because the sequel trilogy was rushed it had insufficient time for preparation. Kathleen Kennedy accepted Rian Johnson’s first draft of The Last Jedi after he threw out everything that was in J.J.Abrams’ version of the screenplay. This then resulted in inconsistent characterisation between episodes and trilogies for Poe and Luke in particular. Without a properly conceived outline the story lacked all structure and was ultimately told in the wrong order, with justifiable complaints about Rey being a Mary Sue being something that could have been easily fixed if she had been trained in the use of a lightsaber by Luke ahead of fighting anyone.Strictly speaking, it didn’t make sense for Luke to be atop the crag at the end of The Force Awakens as one would reasonably expect him to be waiting with his bags packed at the shoreline for the Millennium Falcon to pick him up after he had been stranded on the island after crashing his X-Wing into the sea after its rear cavity that normally held his astromech droid was struck by lightning on his arrival during a storm as he had felt his Leia’s grief over the death of her husband through his familial Force bond. Had he been able to lift the X-Wing up out of the sea and get its avionics to work again then Rey wouldn’t have had to travel all the way to Ahch-To as Luke would have landed his X-Wing on D’Qar right after Leia was giving Rey a big hug. As this didn’t happen it is reasonable to infer that Luke wasn’t returning because he couldn’t rather than because he wouldn’t.If Rian had really wanted to represent Luke the way that he did then audience’s expectations would not have been raised for two years if Rey had not found him to be dressed in his formal Jedi robes, as if he was prepared for some momentous ceremony, but had instead struggled to find him and after searching the whole of the island and almost giving up hope she would find him dressed in his worn out leather fishing clothes, sucking the milk directly from a Thala siren. This would be a terrible disservice to the character, and everyone would hate it, and it would be entirely the wrong thing to do, but at least the structure would be consistent and expectations would not be raised, only to be cruelly subverted, as if the screenwriter was mocking us for caring about this significant character.Poe isn’t Poe. When you realise that the pilot Leia sent to get the course to Luke from Lor San Tekka, and who destroyed Starkiller Base, is unaccountably taken to disobeying orders, accusing his superior officer of cowardice, and allowing for mission critical secret information (which he had just discovered) to undermine, what would otherwise have been a successful escape plan, all so Rian Johnson is able to contrive his fourth act and redeem Luke through a heroic sacrifice (which actually doesn’t land, as it isn’t witnessed by the Resistance as they are too busy being impressed by Rey), then you come to appreciate that Poe was made out to be mutinous and, like Luke, act against his previously established character to facilitate a spectacularly contrived ending. It isn’t that Holdo should have told Poe her plan, but that Poe should have told Holdo his plan. This is the way things work in a naval hierarchy. Top-down will be need-to-know, and bottom-up will be politely-recommend. Calling superiors cowards and kicking chairs around should get you thrown in the brig if you were not already in there as a result of disobeying orders. The fact that Poe is given is allowed this enormously “long leash” is so that he can freely disrupt Holdo’s plan and precipitate the events that lead to Luke’s return. So, how should it have been structured?Surely, if I can reorganise the material of VII and VIII somehow, then I can prove that the problem with the sequel trilogy is structural and not “agenda pushing”.However, I only have enough material for two movies, so I will complete the Saga with the addition of another episode. It makes more sense to have this be a kind of prequel to the sequel trilogy which does the essential world building that was glossed over in The Force Awakens, and shows Leia’s New Republic centred upon Hosnian Prime and Luke’s Jedi Academy on Yavin IV and Snoke’s Starkiller Base hidden undetected in the Unknown Regions of the western rim of the galaxy. I’m going to make minimal changes to the order of scenes so that the majority of the trilogy could be reedit of the currently released sequel trilogy films. I don’t need to wait for Episode IX to arrive as I know how to end the Saga effectively with the footage we already have. I feel this will prove that there is no SJWhatever in their sequel trilogy as it would noticeably remain after the content was rearranged. To be clear, I am not wasting everyone’s time by proposing a DeFeminised cut of the films. Rey is the main protagonist. Neither Poe or Luke’s character is trashed:Star Wars: Episode VII – The Hidden FortressLeia persuades the New Republic to allow her to form an Exploratory Fleet with which to chart the Unknown Regions that lie in the Western Rim of the galaxy in order to find potential existential threats.Luke trains a new generation of Jedi, including Leia and Han’s son Ben, but Ben becomes fascinated by the philosophy of Kreia and wants to know the whole of the Force, balancing Light and Dark with other teenage followers, until one tragic night, when Luke has left for Hosnian Prime in order to bring back Leia to tell him at long last the truth about how his grandfather wasn’t murdered by Vader that he had been promised to keep from the boy in order to stop him fearing he too might become a Sith, where Ben’s acolytes are discovered by the younger apprentices to be breaking their sacred vow of celibacy in order to gain knowledge of the Dark Side through indulging their passions, a situation spirals out of control and the young Jedi misconstrue them to have fallen to the Dark Side and will not listen to their excuses as they may be at risk of Force Persuasion and inevitably, despite Ben trying to defuse matters, this confrontation results in a massacre where only he and his eight followers end up surviving. The following dawn a bat-like ship arrives and lands and a mysterious masked woman strides out and kills the few remaining who lie dying with her red saberstaff. Invited aboard her ship she takes them back to Starkiller Base which then fires on the five planets of the Hosnian system which constitute the entirety of the New Republic.Leia and Luke return to his Academy on Yavin IV to find the aftermath of the massacre and her son missing, having narrowly avoided being vaporised by being on their way back when Hux ordered the attack. So, far Snoke hasn’t been seen. Luke tells Leia that he needs to go looking for answers and thinks he can find the knowledge he needs at the first Jedi temple, and how he intends to meet the old Jedi scholar Lor San Tekka on Jakku to find out what he knows about the location of the long lost temple. It doesn’t say LUKE SKYWALKER HAS VANISHED in the text crawl of any movie in the saga, as he wouldn’t leave without telling his sister where he was going, and it is unlikely anyone could kidnap him, so The Force Awakens was wrong right from the first sentence, even earlier if you question how the Force could awaken when it is a part of all living things already, so is presumably already awake? Ben and his acolytes are trained by their new Mistress and become her Sith Knights who accompany the large armies of First Order Stormtroopers as they conquer numerous civilisations as they invade the galaxy from where they were hiding for decades in the Unknown Regions to the West.Leia is forced to take refuge in an old Rebel base on Crait (thereby expediting the narrative immensely), and behind its thick door which is impregnable to orbital bombardment, Leia calls for help from her allies scattered in the Outer Rim, and waits, hoping her brother will return soon. Luke meets with Lor San Tekka who provides him with the course to Ahch-To which he was unable to take himself as he lacks the skills to navigate the spatial anomalies which have prevented exploration of this region of the galaxy for millennia and made them unaware of the species that evolved there. Luke then travels to Ahch-To but the rear cavity of his X-Wing which normally holds his astromech droid is hit by a bolt of lightning and he is forced to ditch it in the sea and swim ashore unable to return or signal for rescue. There, trapped on the island he finds the first Jedi temple and the ancient texts containing details about Force Abilities that had been lost with time. Luke also finds one of the original Uneti trees which were indigenous to the planet and which the first Jedi took seeds from to plant first on Coruscant and later from there on Dagoba and from there on Yavin IV.Luke engages in meditation enhanced by the Force Sensitive tree, which amplifies his Force Vision, and lets him understand who Snoke is (spoiler: the secret second apprentice of Darth Sidious, the Emperor, who realised he could bend the Rule of Two provided that his apprentices never learned of each other’s existence AND who after Sidious and Vader had died had become the new host for the Sith Force Ghost which had possessed Sidious when his old Master let him kill him in his sleep - a reveal that would be held back for a second sequel trilogy, as it would become apparent that Snoke corrupted Ben as his Force Ghost sought a younger host and this explained why Snoke wasn’t aware of the danger he was in as this evil spirit lurking within him was clouding his awareness of his immediate physical surroundings and swamping his senses with the murderous feelings of Ben), and what has to be done to ultimately rid the Sith from the galaxy once and for all.The movie ends with Snoke asking the Mistress to bring Ben before him for the first time and it is only then that Ben realises he has been working for what appears to be a giant ghost. This makes it seem all the more impossible that Luke could stop Snoke as he can’t kill what already appears to be dead. It is not revealed that this is merely a holographic projection. Snoke renames Ben to be Kylo Ren, and tells him his first order is to kill his Mistress in accordance with the Rule of Two. Snoke explains he can’t have two apprentices as they may join forces to depose him. Snoke tells him he is to use the Knights to kill his Mistress as to attempt to kill the woman who trained him would be foolhardy. Kylo Ren, Master of the Knights of Ren goes to his former Mistress’ quarters only to find she has gone. She left Starkiller Base as soon as she told Ben to go and see him.^My fan fiction has to be long as there is a lot to set up. The sequel trilogy has very weak foundations. This undermines credible character motivations and forced Rian Johnson to retcon Ren’s origins with a very clumsy pair of contradictory flashbacks which portrayed Luke completely out of character. We need to show Ben becoming Ren without Luke trying to murder him. It helps to understand the galaxy was at peace after Episode VI and what Leia did to help create the New Republic, but show that that has become complacent about threats to its continued existence and she struggles to get funding for her Exploratory Fleet. We also get introduced to Rey’s mother, who fled Starkiller Base rather than be killed by Kylo Ren, a woman who was formerly the apprentice of Snoke, and before that the apprentice to Darth Maul, and before that the girlfriend of Han. Rey’s mother can eventually be revealed to be Qi’Ra in a second sequel trilogy.Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last JediBB-8 is given the course to Luke by Poe after Lor San Tekka is killed by Ren. Poe is captured and interrogated, only to be freed by FN-2187 who escapes with him and is subsequently named Finn. They crash back on Jakku and are separated.Rey is introduced as a resourceful scavenger who sells what valuable parts she is able to find in the wrecks of Corellian Star Destroyers to miserly scrapyard owner Unkar Plutt in exchange for small amounts of dehydrated food. She lives alone in an AT-ST awaiting the return of her family who she remembers abandoned her there as a young child. She has flown before, but has never left the planet.Shows Rey persuading Teedo to give up BB-8. We then show her meeting Finn, and escaping from the First Order in the Millennium Falcon. She then goes directly to Crait after BB-8 tells Finn that is where Leia is.There is no Han anywhere in the movie and Disney have filmed Harrison Ford’s scenes for use in Episode IX and then kept them in the can, rather than pull him out for cheap nostalgia in Episode VII only to be forced to kill him off early on in the trilogy as he was only prepared to be in the one film. Obviously, under those circumstances you put the actor in Episode IX and work on building up to his appearance. So far we have had lots of Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill and that should be enough to bring back old fans of the franchise. Disney needed to have more faith in their brand and allow the narrative time to unfold.BB-8 unifies his course with the star map held by R2-D2 and Leia dispatches Rey and Chewie to bring back Luke.Rey arrives much as before, and ascends the island alone, finding Luke atop the crag, but the film doesn’t end as the story has been so expedited that this now occurs at the middle not the end. Consequently, there is no cliffhanger and Luke hands Rey his deactivated green lightsaber, last seen in Episode VI, walking off saying: LESSONS. TOMORROW. AT DAWN. Rey is dumbfounded by this and didn’t go there to train as a Jedi (inverting their relationship from what we got), but was so in awe of the legendary Jedi Master that she didn’t speak up to say that there had been a misunderstanding and Luke must have thought she was one of the apprentices Lor San Tekka had arranged to send to him should he find any who he deemed worthy.Rey goes to sleep in a stone hut, resolving to speak to Luke next morning, then wakes and starts to climb the crag before dawn to be sure to get there on time, only to be drawn to a mysterious hollow tree surrounded by morning mists. Inside of this she has a Force Vision which connects her to Kylo Ren, this introduces him to her and they end up touching fingers and she senses that there is still good in him.Snoke is in no way involved in bridging their minds, as he lacks that power. This is all due to Luke spending years with the Uneti tree, which has led it to have a familial Force connection with his nephew. Rey wakes from her dream now certain that she has a destiny and puts aside all thoughts of returning to Jakku to await her family. Rey meets Luke and is told about the Force and then over the course of several months he trains her in the use of his green lightsaber. He has looked into all possible futures and is convinced only she can resolve the situation, whilst his direct involvement would only make matters worse. She returns to Crait without Luke, and finds Ren has had the base under siege for a couple of months and is now in a position to deploy the battering ram cannon he has been forced to invent for the purpose of breaching the door. She is pursued by the Tie fighters providing air cover to the AT-M6s and there is no daft Ski Speeder attack, as they are inside hoping their allies will come and rescue them as their food and water supplies slowly run out.Ren orders Hux to fire the battering ram cannon and the laser starts to build up power. Rey mans the turret as Chewie flys the Falcon through the crystalline interior of the planet. Inside, Leia has given up all hope as her allies have abandoned her. Ackbar being somewhere off in the Unknown Regions with the Exploratory Fleet following the attack on the Hosnian System. The door is pierced. It seems all hope is lost. Then Luke turns up and comforts Leia and goes out through the freshly made hole in the door to stand before the First Order’s ATM6s. Ren orders Hux to fire at Luke. Luke survives.Everyone inside witnesses this and is amazed and inspired, then Poe notices that the Crystal Foxes have fled and in following them they find a route through tunnels of the old salt mine through to a natural cave opening at the rear where Rey had just landed out of line of sight of the AT-M6s after the Porg she had aboard brought her attention to the Foxes escaping from the cave below. Rey does not lift rocks, but assists in the evacuation of Leia’s Resistance cell. Meanwhile, Luke and Ren duel until Luke reveals he is Force Projecting from Ahch-To when he disappears.Had he been there for real he would have been vaporised by the AT-M6s but by he has avoided unnecessary conflict and given his sister an opportunity to fight another day. Ren is enraged. Luke is exhausted, but survives the effort of the Force Projection and looks out on the sunsets.Star Wars: Episode IX – The Force AwakensRey lands the Falcon in the port side hangar of the Raddus, reuniting Leia with Ackbar and the rest of her Exploratory Fleet. As a precaution Leia orders them to jump to lightspeed only to discover to their dismay that they have been tracked. However, crucially there is no Hyperspace Tracking Device or dumb subplot to deactivate it who sole purpose is to fail in order to contrive a fourth act. We don’t need it as we have already had Luke turn up in the last episode. The reason Leia was “tracked” is not that the First Order have some lore breaking technology or that there is a First Order spy aboard the Raddus. Holdo isn’t a double agent. Although, it is understandable that they would keep details of their plan on a need to know basis given that their secret base on Crait was discovered somehow. The truth, revealed towards the end is that Snoke tolerates Ren’s emo outbursts as it is only through his familial Force Bond that the boy can sense his mother’s thoughts and the details of her location, that she told to her allies who never came to Crait, and the jump location for the fleet on the outskirts of the D’Qar system where the main Resistance base is located.Rey felt that Luke had cut himself off from the Force in The Last Jedi only reconnecting with it at the end to do the Force Projection. Luke’s reason for doing so was to prevent his nephew finding his location and turning up in orbit with a Star Destroyer to destroy himself, the island, Porgs and all. Luke is now vulnerable to being found, but it will take time for Ren to ascertain his location.Snoke orders Ren to attack and he destroys the X-Wings in the starboard side hangar of the Raddus. However, Ren does not attack the bridge. Poe is injured in the explosion and is in recovery for much of the rest of the film.Rey goes aboard the Supremacy where she attempts to redeem Ren, but he sees this as an opportunity to trick Snoke (which only works as his mind is clouded by the evil spirit within him), Ren kills Snoke and is then possessed by the evil spirit of its former host.Ren and Rey defend themselves against the Praetorian guard who are actually former members of the Knights of Ren, and poignantly were Ben’s childhood friends. They are totally under the control of Snoke and have fallen to the Dark Side, some Light still remained in Ren, which is what Rey sensed during her Force Connection with him on Ahch-To, and for a moment after the fight there is a chance Ren could claw his way back towards balance, if only Rey would come halfway to meet him in a moral Grey zone that balanced both Forces. He begs, she refuses. The evil spirit takes hold and thereafter, he slips quickly to the Dark Side unable to hold on to the Light although even at the end he still seeks Rey as someone to teach who he can make into the Grey Jedi he has always aspired to be. Ren and Rey have a tug of war over her green lightsaber until it breaks apart.Rey flees and is seen to leave in Snoke’s ship, when a desperate Holdo is forced to ram the Raddus into the Supremacy after Ren reveals his mother has ordered the invisible cloaked escape transports to be fuelled and the ship abandoned as they pass by D’Qar.Rey goes inside a cellar of an old castle and finds another lightsaber but runs into the woods without it when it elicits disturbing visions from her with a flashback to when Anakin witnessed the death of Mace Windu.Ren is waiting for her in the woods and captures her, and takes her to Starkiller Base. Leia disembarks a transport and we see that Han is still a General and hasn’t reverted to being a double dealing smuggler and they are still in love and concerned about their son. Finn wants Han to help him rescue Rey.Han exits hyperspace within the planetary shield of Starkiller Base and then Finn forces Phasma to deactivate the shield by pointing his blaster beneath the rim of her helmet. Rey has freed herself using Force Persuasion already established in Episode VIII and runs into Finn. Han runs into Ren and is killed by him. Chewie injures Ren and triggers the explosives Han and he had set. Rey and Finn flee into the woods only to encounter and fight Ren. Finn gets sliced up the spine, Rey thinks he is dead and kills the clearly irredeemable Ren.We then see Leia on D’Qar react in shock as she feels the loss of her son through her Force Bond. We then see Luke on Ahch-To react with sadness having failed to prevent his nephew from falling to the Dark Side after Rey had attempted to redeem him. This is one of the possible futures he forsaw whilst sat beneath his Uneti tree and it is the reason he was so melancholic when training Rey as he knew that she was destined to be instrumental in the death of Snoke, but only at the cost of his nephew’s life.A now recovered Poe flies in with Black Squadron, does a trench run and he goes inside and starts a chain reaction that causes the planet to implode into a newborn star, but not before Rey and Finn are rescued by the timely arrival of Chewie in the Falcon. They return to D’Qar and Finn gets medical attention. Rey is apprehensive about meeting Leia after killing her son, but is forgiven. Leia now understands that she had lost her son a long time ago. They embrace and Rey feels she is no longer alone.^Han still dies, but it is hard to avoid that dramatically and explain why he isn’t in a second sequel trilogy. Luke now lives and can feature in a second sequel trilogy. We finally get the twelve episode saga that Lucas originally intended, if not in content, at least in scale. This material, apart from Episode VII can be made simply by reediting the two movies thus far released. If they really were riddled with SJWhatever then it would still be apparent in this rearranged content, but fixing Luke to be consistent, and having him train Rey ahead of her fighting anyone solves many problems in the sequel trilogy and stops her from being a Mary Sue.Leia isn’t a Mary Poppins character either as Snoke wouldn’t want Kylo to blast her into space as she is needed to track the Resistance and if she is dead or comatose, that isn’t possible, and the Exploratory Fleet would be free to jump away and would not be able to be traced. What is wrong is that Disney are making sci-fi films when they ought to realise that Star Wars originally belonged to the space fantasy genre. A cloaked binary beacon bracelet isn’t needed if the structure is simplified so Rey returns to find Leia in the same place. Each of these films are badly written, but more than that the trilogy is poorly conceived and woefully structured. That structural weakness is the problem, and more time for preparation might have avoided it and resulted in entirely original stories. All I can come up with is a restructuring of the content they put out into an order where set ups precede pay offs, and there is no inessential time wasting fluff. Do just this and there is no apparent pushing of a Feminist or Diversity agenda, as both Paige and Rose are absent from the film, making it equal in diversity to Episode VI which featured the characters of Oola and Lando compared to Episode VII which features Maz and Finn. Apologies, as I had to add a paragraph to this as I have forgotten an important nuance. The fan edit is going well and is currently at the rough cut stage. Both Disney sequels are a good half hour shorter, but I haven’t started on making my own Episode VII out of images and narration.
