Is it really possible to start from scratch?

Of course, there are plenty of consumer businesses that you can start from scratch offline (e.g. open a shop and wait for customers; use the profits to open another; and, so on) or online (cut some code, like Mark Zuckerberg; call it The Facebook; set it loose in your local community, and watch it grow like wildfire). But, I think you're talking about a business that offers products to other, much larger, businesses (B2B)?My son and I were discussing this very thing last night, and not only is it possible, but I did it.But, there's an element of luck to getting your first break ... your first real enterprise client.I had created a business around an outsourcing idea.My first lucky break was when I wrote a report about it and sent it cold to a journalist at a leading business magazine. He decided to run with it and that lead to a full-page article, calling me an expert in my field (even though my business was still just an idea: I had NO customers, yet).In today's world, that would mean engaging with key journalists via social media in meaningful (non-salesy) ways.Based on that article, I was asked to develop - and, lead a course - on the subject by a well-known training organisation, and that's how I met my first 5 corporate customers: they all attended the course and I was standing upfront: the driving seat [irony intended].Unfortunately, they were all smaller companies and local municipalities, not quite the Fortune 500 companies that I needed. So, my next suggestion is to start a blog in your chosen field (& guest-post in others), with the aim of getting unpaid speaking gigs at key industry conferences. You want to be seen as a thought leader in your field. You want to be standing in front of decision makers in a position of authority. So, how did I then get my first major client?I wrote cold letters to the CEO's of some of the larger companies that I wanted to deal with, and included the names of some of my smaller clients.Naturally, I attached the article and conference flyers that I appeared in.Now, I guess, I would do this by email. This letter got me a call-back - from my soon-to-be (well, it took another 18 months, but that's 'soon' in Big Enterprise world) first major client. What I didn't know was that they had trashed my letter ... until their CFO heard my name mentioned by an associate from outside their company, at which point they dug my letter out of the trash and caked me.This is the 'thought leadership' strategy at work.A little (lot) of luck, triggered by all of the hard work that you put into creating the foundations and environment for 'luck' to (eventually) work. And, once I had my first real Name Brand client, I was off and running; in a sales call, dropping their name as a client was all the cred I ever needed ... that, plus a great product that we all believed in and a great (but, small) team.

What is a stand that you took with a customer that you will never apologize for?

In about 2016, I was working for a high-end motel chain. If one can ever refer to a motel as high-end. Anyway, this hysterical comes rushing into the lobby, to tell whoever would listen to her, that some man had just blown cigarette smoke in her face as she had been walking past him, and when she challenged him regarding the matter, the man told her to f—k off.I was completing some paperwork at the desk, and the desk clerk looked at me as if to say… “Take care of this will you.” So I step outside, and the hysterical woman was right on my heels. If she had been any closer, she would have been on my back. She points out the man to me, and he is a regular guest, and he was standing and smoking where smoking was permitted. I turned to the hysterical woman and told her that he could stand there. The hysterical woman then flew off the handle and threatened to call the police, fire department, public health authority, city licensing department, the worker’s compensation board, and the press. After each agency the hysterical woman named off, I repeated the phrase… “He can smoke there.” I eventually excused myself because I had other matters to take care of, and this is the biggy, I was only the general help person. My job was to fix toilets, change lightbulbs, and drive the hotel guests to either WalMart or Home Depot and places like that. My job was not to get into conflict with hotel guests.Anyway the hysterical woman went into the lobby of the hotel and ranted on once again about who she was going to call. She did not give any reason why she was going to call all these agencies, just that she was going to call them. At the same time as the hysterical woman’s rant, the corporate Human Resources Manager had come into town, and the HR Manager asked me if I would apologize to the hysterical woman, and I was just about to ask the HR Manager just exactly what it was that I was going to apologize for. And all of a sudden the hysterical woman went off again, repeating her threats. When the hysterical woman finally finished her verbal threats, the HR Manager asked the hysterical woman to step outside with her so they could further talk.I went away to fix a toilet or change a lightbulb, and I thought it was all over. Well wouldn’t you know it. The HR Manager sent me a disciplinary letter for not apologizing. The letter threatened me with termination of my employment should this ever happen again. I politely told my manager, and anyone who would listen that I was going to be referring the disciplinary letter to my dear friend who is a Personal Injury Lawyer, because my feelings had been hurt. Nothing became of this of course, except about a month later, the HR Manager left her position citing pressing family business.I would like to say in my defense… At no time did I have a chance to apologize to the hysterical woman for anything, simply because the hysterical woman wouldn’t shut-up. And I had 3 of my fellow co-workers standing right there watching the entire performance, and all of them agreed that I did not have any opportunity at all to apologize.I happily left this job about a year later, and on my last day, the General Manager of the hotel gave me a going away bar-b-que. I was the only employee who had ever been giving such a send-off. The General manager knew I still a year left in which I could sue the hotel, and I was still seriously thinking about it!!!Thank you for reading.
