Managerial duties are also very important for an entrepreneur as well as the organization. If you want to build something in Python - I am assuming structuring & designing parts of your problem will be the preliminary skill that you would want to groom first.As a part of coaching myself, here's what I mostly do - in the order of time I have on hands.Pick up a problem that is posted either as a Recruiting problem (I tried implementing solutions to Quora Challenges, here http://www.quora.com/challenges , or as a part of a larger problem in a Research paper that is related to my work. For instance, we wanted to do User Profiling on a user's Geographical data - so before attacking the entire problem, I pick up one promising paper, generate synthetic data that, that algorithm will accept. and then implement the 1st Pseudo code in that paper. Lately, I have implemented - "Mining Cluster-Based Temporal Mobile Sequential Patterns in Location-Based Service Environments" - you pick your domain !In recent days, I have implemented my own versions of Clustering and Non-linear optimization - which ain't that good like the one in off-the-shelf packages with respect to iterations & global minima - but it gives me insight into the nuances of "bounds" and clever optimizations. Also, I have learnt, that my ability to translate a solution into other seemingly unrelated solutions has increased dramatically. I think the key is picking something that fits into a larger problem, so you are not-just-coding-for-boredom-but-for-PURPOSE !As a precursor to this, I mostly solve Hacker Rank puzzles - just to get into the rhythm. What I found along the days that actually checking in my code (in spite of how badly written it be) - checking it in Github - keep me pushing .Some valuable Skills that I learnt while scaling up -:1. Profile you program (Line profiling & memory profiling)2. Use Synthetic data often to feed into your unit test cases - and time for it - Gives you larger insight into corner cases and overall running time.3. Structuring your work independently and trashing your work often4. Thinking before you implement5. The most intuitive solution may not be the one that is actually needed- for eg, I was once solving a problem where - Given n jars with some initial balls. You draw 2 bounded random numbers continually (say till k steps), you have to fill all the jars between jars of that random numbers and finally compute the average of all the balls in the jars. The most intuitive approach would be using a list and updating the values. But that's missing the key insight that you don't even need a list to do this. You can do this by just incrementing One variable that keeps a track of all that had been added to EACH jar in EACH step , k. This is where, timing helps - since it forces you to re-think.6. Distil the key insight, till you can't distil it any more- aka. sleeping over your code.7.
