I always thought Project Fear was a bad joke which probably deserved a lot of the mockery thrown at it, but fortunately for every Leave voter, that is all in the past now.Project Fear is dead and gone. Welcome to Project Here.How is the UK doing overall now that it’s not a member of the EU?Any jokes or snarky comments about Project Here, especially from Leavers, are welcome. Umbra means shadow, and to take umbrage means to take offence.It’s more than that, though. "Miss Umbrage" was the name of the headmistress of St Trinian's in the novelisation The Terror of St Trinians, or Angela's Prince Charming by Ronald Searle and Timothy Shy, pub. 1956. The same book makes reference to a band called Mo Muckstein and his Merrie Marauders. Another staff member at St Trinian’s, from the general cartoon strips, is a Miss Tonks, and one of the drawings shows staff and students gathered beside a banner saying "Welcome to our new Science Mistress", applauding the arrival of a witch on a broomstick. Another cartoon shows students being frisked for weapons, as Filch frisks the Hogwarts students on their return from Hogsmeade.St Trinian’s, for those who don’t know it, was a very dark, sinister girls’ boarding school, filled with Satanism, murder and mayhem, which featured in a series of cartoons by Ronald Searle. Although it belongs to the 1940s and ‘50s it was such a cultural icon that it was still universally known in the UK when Rowling and I were girls, and it has featured in six films, as recently as 2007.Just to bring it round in a circle there was, famously, a real girls’ school called St Trinnean’s - in Edinburgh, where Rowling wrote the books. It’s now part of Pollock Halls Student Halls of Residence.
